AlaskaExpert - Monte Davis

Alaska was my home from 1970 to 2005. Most of my family still lives in Alaska and I still spend about 3 months there every year.
I have been involved in the Alaska tourism since 1989.
I truly believe that EVERYONE, sooner or later, need to visit this incredible state.
I would never have left Alaska except my wife wanted to live by her family for a while...

What to Expect in May in Alaska Babies! Everybody's having babies! Moose calves, bear cubs, lambs, the list goes on… Eagles, Swans, Geese, shore birds, Sandhill Cranes, Great Blue Herons along with hundreds of other birds are building nests. Foliage is growing so fast, you can almost watch it. Literally a hillside that was barren in the morning can have a bright green sheen by late afternoon! Snow will be receding, but will still be on the mountains and, in some places, come right down to the road. They get up to 17 hours of daylight on summer solstice, June 21st. In Fairbanks it never gets dark in June. Although the sun does set, it barely goes down behind the White Mountains and comes right back up. There's a place an hour or so north on the Elliott highway where you can go and watch the sun "not set". It's been 30 years or so since I've done it, but it's [View Full Entry]

Folks ask me all the time "When is the best month to go to Alaska... Wild flowers start to bloom in late April and never stop until the snow flies. There is not a "best month for the flowers". Each of the summer months adds something different to the mix and I would hate to try to say which is the best. We have resident whales in Alaska. The migratory whales start arriving in April and don leave again until October. There is not a "best month" for the whales. The glaciers calve (thats what its called when the front edge [View Full Entry]

Hi, This is the first of my blogs on travel to Alaska and I thought I'd start out by explaining why I have chosen to do this. In talking with friends all over the Lower 48 I have been amazed that people who have gone to Alaska once or maybe twice consider themselves "experts" on Alaska. They'll tell you what the weather is going to be like in June and that the bugs are bad at such and such a time. The point is that having lived in Alaska for over 35 years I know that you had better not generalize [View Full Entry]
