Al and Sara - Al Mercer & Sara Hassen

Al Mercer & Sara Hassen Hi - this is Al & Sara's blog!

We are 2 VSO volunteers working in Assosa, Beneshangul-Gumuz, Ethiopia for 2 years from Feb 2008 to 2010.

Don't try to find us on the map, 'cos we don't appear. We are proud to announce a grand total of 0 entries in the Lonely Planet - Ethiopia & Eritrea and um, 0 entries in the Bradt guide. In fact as an "emerging region" within Ethiopia our area is pretty anonymous both internally and (clearly) internationally. With the mud strip airport being relaid with tarmac we had a 2 day 4x4 journey here from Addis. That said, Assosa is a regional capital, has a population of 15k and at least 40 vehicles. It is hot, green, welcoming and (currently) pretty dry.

About us - Al has swapped a daily 3-motorway commute (M32/M4/M5) between Bristol & Cheltenham and a life of managing IT Security & Networking for a 3-mango tree commute to the central regional Capacity Building bureau where he is sharing IT skills with the bureau ICT staff. His Arsenal and Bristol Rugby season tickets have been exchanged for 56k updates via BBC online and some quality match analysis from the host of dedicated Arsenal fans found across the whole of Ethiopia!

- Sara has put her job as a Marketing & Communications manager at JISC (based at Bristol University) on hold for 2 years while she embarks on a slightly further daily commute (5 trees and the occasional cow) to work as a Planning Officer at the Regional Education Bureau. She has traded 10k runs along the Bristol cycle path for as yet undecided routes around the dusty streets of Assosa town.

We hope you find something interesting here - and if not, just marvel at the photography ;)

For more information on Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO) see www.vso.org.uk.

We have been raising money for VSO - thanks to everyone for your help - we have over £3,500 so far. If you would like to help us out the money goes directly to VSO, not us and you can do so at this page http://www.justgiving.com/alandsarainethiopia

In fact VSO liked our themed 10k run so much they featured it here :)

Finally we have a domain registered which is our home site and will link to this blog see www.alandsarainethiopia.co.uk.

So ciao,ciao & buhallah!
Al & Sara

I put pictures in it as well. Honest!
Well it's been some time since the joyous Obama update. Can't say it's been writers block as if you have followed this blog you will realise I can jibber jabba utter rubbish with the best of them with very little encouragement whatsoever ;) No, more like being busier than a ZERO-legged man in an ar*e kicking competition! On Thursday I start a 5 day Cisco course. I am still writing Day 2. Doh. I have started teaching English and held 4 classes this week. Two beginners classes for women and two mixed advanced classes. As a bit of a perfectionist, I [View Full Entry]

The last 24 hours have been interesting times indeed! The president of Beneshangul-Gumuz for the last 14 years has just stood down in favour of a new appointee from Addis - a result of last week's visit by three senior ministers, including (I am told) one of the founding members of the TPLF, part of the ruling EPRDF party that are currently in power and overthrew the previous military Derg regime in the early 1990s. President Yaregal was a Gumuz, one of the largest ethnic groups of the region, and he has been replaced by a Berta, the ethnic group located [View Full Entry]

Just what exactly are YOU doing for Ethiopians?? Well I guess I ought to interrupt the random (blog) thoughts of Chairman Al with an update on work. I will do a 'typical day' blog later this week (if I get some pictures/video) as it is quite a contrast to a typical day back in the UK; not because I do less work, just the timings and general environmental differences. Ok, I've not had to shoo any sheep out of the office yet, but we have definately had a couple of oxen wandering around the compund for two days, waiting for slaughter [View Full Entry]

Since we have been back it's been feast of Johnny Morris tales. The rats have been running egg and spoon races in the attic space under the tin roof. Sara has had a sheep walk into her office, take a seat and start dictating a memo...well, almost. No doubt she will tell more but it was raining and her office gained an extra staff member for the afternoon. Not a common occurance at Jisc back home she says - but then maybe only because she's on the top floor and the sheep just can't reach the buttons in the lift...? The [View Full Entry]

Here we go. After a lull in activity I'm back in full blogging fettle. In fact I'm thinking of having a 'blog week' to catch up on the entries - there is the whole field trip from April that needs doing! Not to mention my (work) day in the life of, Ethiopian names, booze, bugs, absent friends and the musings of a layman on the business of 'development'. This weekend I have hardly left the house. Work-wise I have been (as Neil would say) 'busier than a one-legged man in an a*se kicking competition' what with preparing and delivering training (that's [View Full Entry]

Are you sure about these waterfalls?
I had remained in Addis after the IT Volunteers workshop to carry out some work on the Programme Office network, so my flight back to Assosa was not until the Tuesday after Meskel. The flight itself was unusually uneventful. I did have the pleasure of 2 seats to myself, the only spare seat on the plane. Guess I ought to change my brand of deodorant? Maybe the other passengers (quite rightly) realised that the personal space allowed in a Fokker 50 is far greater when sat next to a slim Ethiopian than when seated next to some Ferengi who had just [View Full Entry]

Five Go Mad on Meskel OK it's more like 3 plus the pick-pocket and the Federal Policeman with the *big* stick. September 27th is Meskel - the orthodox Christian festival in Ethiopia - or the finding of the true cross. Legend has it that some ancient queen (Helena) had a dream in which she burnt a pile of wood and the smoke led to the place at which the true cross of the crucifixion was buried. Celebrated on the evening before (i.e. the afternoon of Friday 26th) the centre of Addis grinds to a halt as the 16-lane chaos of Meskel [View Full Entry]

Football wasn't the winner
I am the Jonah Ok. Let's get the unhappy bit out of the way first. On February 2nd when I left the UK Arsenal were sitting pretty 5 points clear at the top of the Premiership. They were still in the FA Cup and Champions League. Granted Spurs had managed, after 9 years of trying, to finally beat the kids in the League Cup semi but I guess like monkeys and Shakespeare, if you keep trying long enough, something like that is bound to happen. The bottom line was Arsenal were set fair for a successful season. And since I left [View Full Entry]

I finished attending a 2 day UNICEF review meeting and was asked to write a report after the meeting - a novelty for me to be asked to do something, made all the more interesting as the whole meeting was in Amharic! Al flew off to Addis on Saturday and arrived safely (well just, so I hear) ready for an IT workshop and he's also doing some work for VSO, so won't be back for about 10 days - the longest time we've been apart in a long time, I am sure it will be a novelty for a few days [View Full Entry]
