One piggie went to market This is fascinating! And I have many questions... but foremost is whether the restaurant is a pork free zone?! I'm guessing it is. I had read your blogs on museums before but never realised that obscure museums were a thing of interest. If you make it to Meteora in Greece, there's a Mushroom Musuem! We were curious, but not curious enough to pay the entry fee :)
Germany Thank you for taking me on a trip through Germany. It is a country I've not often thought about exploring, but as your blogs have shown, there seem many interesting places to visit in this nearby country.
Almost Unreal I think I see what you're doing there, it's Almost Unreal! 😊 Hard to avoid castles when you're travelling through Europe! I stopped off in Kassel on my brief trip through Germany, Interrailing in Europe in 1999, alongside only Berlin and Munich. I remember the powerful Hercules Monument well. The whole place was very impressive. Great that you timed your visit with the water, that must have been a highlight! 😊
Summer holidays I would have been a bit disappointed that the museum on the Grimm brothers wasn't focussed on their fairy tales which are famous all over the world. But I suppose that's all I know about them, whereas locals may value their other ventures too. It's beautiful that the people of Lubeck can grow such lovely flowers out of the sealed footpath. Thanks for taking us along on your summer holidays Ake and Emma, I've learnt a lot about Germany and that part of the world. Where to next? :)
What left and what's next Actually we may have reached the end of our trip chronologically but we actually have two blog entries left to publish. They are two blogs covering a total of three awesome museums.
I (Ake) was in Sicily 10 days in December. I am writing blogs about that trip too. They are next in line to be published. The next trip we have planned is to Puerto Rico.
Mozart and The Sound of Music Yes, I remember my visit to Salzburg 24 years ago was also filled with Mozart, The Sound of Music, and lots of tourists. It doesn't seem to have changed much, lol! Your pictures do remind me of how beautiful Austria is, and how they really knew how to build their buildings as opulently as possible. I like the idea of walking from a train station to a city centre through palace gardens - nice!
Same then, same now, same inte the future I guess When I was there 35 years ago it was the same. When you were there 24 years ago it was the same. Today it is the same. 10 years, 25 years, 35 years from now it will still be the same I guess. /Ake
Famous Places Great! You covered lots of famous places I'd only heard about here Ake - Nuremberg, the site of the Munich Olympic terrorist attack, and Frankenstein Castle. I totally get why you took lots of photos of the name "Frankenstein" - I would probably have done the same, lol! Id be ok living in a Futuro House I think! 😊
To stay in a Futuro house would be fun I'd love to stay in a Futuro house. For one or two nights that is. Not longer than that I think. Wonder if there is a hotel somewhere in the world that has a Futuro house. If there is I would add it to my list of places I want to visit. /Ake
Garden gnomes This statue made we wonder if this region/culture is where the common garden gnome statues originated from?! I've never considered the cultural roots of the garden gnome before, but your blogs with two gardens with such statues has made me think... :)
On garden gnomes Garden gnomes were not a big thing where I grew up. I had hardly heard that they even existed until I was in my 20-ies. That might be the reason I never made the connection between the garden gnomes in gardens of historical buildings and modern day garden gnomes. But now that you point it out you I can totally see that they might be two manifestations of the the same thing. /Ake
Mozart's birth house I laughed when I read that Ake kind of remembered visiting it, but only halfway through did he remember that he really had visited it... and also remembered he didn't like it! You can now say you didn't like it twice :D
And it is not a question about age Visitied it twice, once as a child and once as an adult. Since I didn't like it at any of the visits I now know for sure that it isn't a question about age. /Ake
Good question My guess is that things that are important today, such as "memorabilia" and "provenance", were less important in the 18th century. Probably much of his belongings were sold off at auctions or were taken care of by relatives. Later people had no idea of them once being owned by Mozart. Or maybe Smithonian Institution bought it all his belongings and have them in a museum in Washington DC... /Ake
We are Emma Holmbro and Ake Dahllof. We live in Stockholm, Sweden.
We have travelled more or less regularly since the mid 1990-ies and it seems like the more we travel the more difficult it is to decide where to go next. Not because we are running out of places to visit but because we find more places we want to go to faster than we manage to travel to them.
Some of the things from our travel bucket list we have ticked off since we started this blog in 2006 are
Angel Falls in Ven... full info
