The journey starts now.

I'll be heading to California, working on farms all over the state for several months. This adventure will be about learning something very important to me - producing good quality food while maintaining and enhancing the environment too. It will also be about living with freedom - choosing my life as I want it, not being held back by any concept of a normal lifestyle, instead pursuing my goals and doing whatever I need to in order to get there.

The next morning (the 26th) I got up and started heading north with the idea of checking out oyster places in Tomales Bay. Crossed the golden gate bridge, pretty interesting foggy coastland in the morning, the environment looked rather similar to the first farm I visited in socal between escondido and temecula. Temp may be a bit cooler but not by too much, which is a bit surprising since the difference is roughly 475 miles north. Found a place selling oysters, bought a few - more expensive than I was expecting so I took it easy on that, chatted with the guy and left - headed east towards Petaluma then I made arrangements with the next farm as to time I'd show up in Nevada City. First, I headed to Sacramento and looked for interesting places ... read more

I got up in the morning, ate a breakfast of cheese and fruit then decided to look for a place to rent kayaks at my friend (also met through LOTRO) Matt's recommendation. Headed down to cannery row and found a place right by the breakwater, Adventures By the Sea, $30 all day deal, I went out for a few hours and pretty much decided I wanted to go as far as I was allowed which was to the big point on Monterey bay - the northern most part of that land area, so probably about a 7 mile trip total, casual. I stopped for a while pretty often and let myself drift back southeast taking pictures of sea lions and relaxing enjoying the scenery. The area was actually called the Sea Otter Preserve something or other ... read more

This is mostly a picture blog, I'll let the pictures do most of the talking. They're all from the 24th - started off going west from Paso Robles, went to Castoro winery, talked to the wine pourer, guy around my age from Ireland, had a few interesting things to say. After that I just drove north along highway 1, took lots of pictures and enjoyed the scenery. That night I ate at Crystal Fish (I saw it had 5 stars on google - was definitely good quality, offered real wasabi, first I've seen that) in Monterey then stayed in a hostel there. ... read more

This post is for April 20th-24th. The 20th was my last day in San Diego before I would head to the first farm. JK and I went to a session of yoga - my first class session, it was pretty intense even though it was a level 1 class, plenty of sweating - yoga isn't to be underestimated. Afterwards we went to a nice inexpensive and satisfying Indian type restaurant, then bought some work boots and other things getting ready to start some work. I got to the first farm on the evening of April 20th. It wasn't really what I expected and was told from communication with the owner, it didn't work out and unfortunately I didn't get a chance to take pictures, nice area. I left on the 23rd in the afternoon then decided ... read more

This is for 17th-19th. On Saturday we all got up and went to a local restaurant near the beach. Fish tacos apparently is the big signature food around here, I went with that. I agree with JK's philosophy that it pays to do the best with what you have available but not in a worrisome way - was good. Also got an Acai fruit smoothie, only my 2nd time or so having that. After that, stopped by a little farmer's market grocery store, picked up some vegetables, fruit, steaks and turkey legs for me. We spent the next couple hours cleaning up the house - floors were all sticky from the beerfest friday night. After that we had the cookout. Later we sort of watched beerfest but everyone dozed off, we all took a little nap, ... read more

After the appointment with Sheldon, I went back to Andrei's and we wrapped everything up. Andrei told his parents what the weights were I brought - kettlebells, funny hearing them called by their native name, Girya in full communication. Headed out at about 4, probably the most interesting part of the drive was a little ways west of El Centro, the terrain gets mountainous and the road winds around going upwards for a few miles, then is just this massive slope for another several miles. Rinse and repeat for 30 or 40. That was the only time in my drive that other people were driving faster than me, I guess my car has some limitations there. When I got to San Diego, I started feeling good pretty quick. I got to the street and it was ... read more

April 15th 2010

I started out off on Wednesday morning after a full day of packing, drove for around 11 hours - 12 hour total trip with some short breaks. There was nothing particularly interesting though the environment wasn't as plain as that of north Texas and SE Colorado (I recently drove to Denver, from Houston). Rolling pastures around Schulenberg, mesas and hills, drier land past San Antonio. Stayed in El Paso for the night. A fuse blew out for my cigar lighter so I learned how to fix that. Day 2, I took off west again, got to Phoenix in the afternoon, finally met my friend Andrei - we had been talking online for about 4 years and we ate several pounds of cheap sushi. We hung out at ASU campus..talked to girls, tried to get into buildings ... read more
