Asia » China » Xinjiang » Kashgar October 3rd 2010

We had a great time in Kashgar. It was our first experience with a Chinese city and was a welcome change from Central Asia. We’ve immediately taken a liking to the food. Our local guide is from Chengdu and he introduced us to some tasty Sichuan dishes. The street food is also quite good. So far we’ve tried meat buns, kebabs, and spicy cold noodles. It’s always a bit of an adventure trying to order food in a restaurant as you never quite know what you’re going to get. Luckily we found a restaurant with pictures on the menu and English translation (sort of). We’re doing our best to learn some Mandarin. We can say three words: hello, thank you, and toilet. It’s a start anyways. We plan to spend about 3 to 4 months in ... read more

We’ve been spoiled with some beautiful mountain drives on this trip. Just when we thought it couldn’t get any better after the Touragat pass from Kyrgyzstan to China, we hired a minibus and local driver to take us up the Karakoram Highway. This is the traditional Silk Road highway that connects Kashgar in China to Pakistan. Gorgeous snow mountains through passes at over 4000 metres elevation, how boring. One of the highlights was when we stopped at Karakol lake with Mushitage Shan (mountain summit at 7546 metres) and its huge glacier overlooking the lake. We spent the night in the town of Tashkurgan (only 60km from the Pakistan border) and went back to Kashgar the next day. There is supposed to be a speed limit through the pass (presumably to prevent accidents on the winding roads) ... read more

Asia » Kyrgyzstan September 28th 2010

Overall we spent 5 weeks in Central Asia in four different countries. Here are some of the highlights of each: Turkmenistan Gets the award for the most quirky country. The Ashgabat camel market is still one of our favorites! Uzbekistan Lots of French tourists, and interesting architecture from the days of the silk route. This country is a place to visit, if you like history. Kazakhstan Sadly we weren't here long enough, but we enjoyed the mountains and will remember the large herds of horses. Kyrgyzstan Place for lots of great hiking and moutain scenery, reminded us a lot of home. Goat polo was a highlight. We've included a few random photos of our daily life in the 'stans. Now we are starting a new part of our trip as we cross into China, where we ... read more

What can we say? This has been one of the trip highlights for sure. The pass on the way to Son-Kul lake is at an elevation of 3450 meters, the lake itself is at approximately 3000 meters and it is Kyrgyzstan's second largest lake. Pretty much as soon as we arrived it started raining and then eventually it turned to snow. We opted to stay in a cozy Yurt that slept six. In case anybody is interested, the yurts are heated with a coal burning stove. Most of the afternoon was spent hiding inside the Yurt playing cards with a few of the others from the group. We woke up early the next morning to a beautiful sunrise and clearing skies. Since the rain/snow had finally stopped, it was really our first chance to have a ... read more

Asia » Kyrgyzstan » Karakol September 21st 2010

This national park has been a great place to get out and do some hiking. The landscape reminds us very much of home in the mountains. The first hike we did was just a quick few hours up the road just to see what there was to see. It was quite nice, just to get off the truck for a while. The following day we went for a bit of a longer hike (unintentionally). Somehow ended up on a ridge to the right of where we intended to go. It turned out to be a much higher and steeper climb. Each time we would come to a ridge, we would expect to be getting to the top, but there was always another ridge ahead to climb. The view from the top was totally worth it though. ... read more

Today we had the pleasure of watching a falcon hunting demonstration and a game of Kok-boru or Ulak Tartysh (goat polo) which is a national sport of Kyrgyzstan. The falcon hunting was interesting, but it was more or less feeding a bunny to a falcon rather than actual hunting. Tough for the bunny, but I guess it's really no different than feeding animals in a zoo. The goat polo was really a sight to be seen. Basically, they kill a goat, remove the head and hooves, then use the goat's carcass for the game. The teams battle for posession of the goat carcass like rugby on horseback. The object of the game is to toss the goat onto the opposing team's goal (a ring of tires). It sounds brutal, and it is. But, the goat is ... read more

Asia » Kazakhstan September 14th 2010

We crossed the border into Kazakhstan on the 13th. We only spent 2 nights in the country as a way to bypass the Uzbek/Kyrgyz issues that occured back in May or so near Osh where our original itinerary was meant to take us. The temperature has taken a dramatic shift in the downward direction. We went from uncomfortably hot throughout most of Uzbekistan until it became quite pleasent in Tashkent. Our first evening in Kazakhstan had us digging out our toques and sweaters from the bottom of our packs for the first time on our trip. Not complaining, just hoping we have warm enough clothing for China when it will be even colder! Leaving the homestay where we spent our first night, we drove into Aksu-Dzhabaghy national park where we spent a second night camping in ... read more

Asia » Uzbekistan » Samarkand September 9th 2010

Samarkand is a nice city. The first day we were there, we participated in the city walking tour that was offered as part of the dragoman trip. Needless to say it was quite long, although fairly informative, it was tough to pay attention once it got to about lunch time and there was still about 3 hours left on the tour. We survived (barely) and finished the tour, it felt like quite the accomplishment really. The rest of our time in Samarkand was fairly relaxing. We caught up on some internet, went for walks, and enjoyed the best pizza we've had in Central Asia at Venezia restaurant...twice. It's already been 2 months since we finished working and we've been on the road now for 7 weeks. So far we seem to be spending to our budget, ... read more

One of the stops along the way from Bukhara to Samarkand was a Yurt camp where we had the opportunity to go for a camel ride. Having gone for a camel ride in Mauritania we were a little nervous since we knew what to expect. The deciding factor was that these were the two hump camels which were different than the other camels we’ve seen. This is the first time we’ve come across the camels with two humps here in Central Asia. Now we can say that we’ve ridden both types. These camels were much more comfortable to ride and had a really nice demeanour.... read more

Asia » Uzbekistan » Khiva September 4th 2010

Khiva was the first city that we came to in Uzbekistan. The old city still had the walls around it. It’s quite a charming place as it’s the best preserved old city in Uzbekistan. We enjoyed wondering the streets and watching people. When we arrived in Khiva we were surprised to find that the country is quite well set up for tourism and there are large amounts of French tourists traveling around Uzbekistan. It seems that this is a big destination for older French tourists. Many of the vendors speak to us in French; as do the kids (bonbon, etc.) The currency in Uzbekistan is fun to deal with. The largest note is valued at approximately $0.50 US. So when we go out for the day we each have a thick stack of notes in our ... read more
