Africa » Namibia » Luderitz June 6th 2008

We arrived in the town of Luderitz in the early afternoon and had lunch at a nice cafe (mmmm toasties!). We don't have any photos of the town, but it is a very pretty place and really shows the German influence. The next morning we stopped at Kolmannskuppe, which is a ghost town from the diamond mining era of Namibia. Once a very rich place where counting diamonds was done on the kitchen table over a cup of tea and people were fed laxatives and x-rayed when they exited the town. After the war when demand for diamonds dropped, the town was vacated and fell victim to the desert sands.... read more

Africa's answer to the Grand Canyon. It's either the second or third largest canyon in the world (depending on what source you look at, and probably how it's measured). Unfortunately you can't do day hikes into the Canyon, but there is a 5 day trek that we might have to do in the future. This time we'll have to settle for the spectacular views, darn...... read more

Africa » Namibia June 3rd 2008

Over the last few days we've been getting used to a different style of truck with open sides and a few less of the luxuries that our last few trucks had. After crossing the border we stopped at a campsite just on the Namibian side where we had a day to relax and go canoeing down the Orange river. It was a fun day and a few short rapids made things interesting.... read more

Africa » South Africa » Western Cape » Cape Town May 31st 2008

Cape Town! The end of our Trans-Africa, and the beginning of the next section of our trip. Kathie's parents and my parents were all lucky enough to be able to visit us in Cape Town for our 5 day layover before we departed for Namibia on a new truck and a whole new group of travellers. We had a fun 5 days catching up with the parents while taking in the sights of Cape Town. It was a refreshing break from truck life, and we also had a day to catch up on the latest movies (Sex and the City and Indiana Jones - figure out who picked each movie...). The highlight for us was the Penguin colony at boulders beach and the drive to Cape Point. It was sad to say goodbye to so many ... read more

Africa » South Africa » Eastern Cape » Storms River May 22nd 2008

Tsitsikama was one of the trip highlights! It's only too bad we didn't have more time here. Unfortunately the trail to the famous Storms River Mouth was closed due to unsafe conditions. It's supposed to be the one thing not to miss here; oh well, gotta save something for next time. Instead we hiked the first 3km of the famous Otter trail. A beautiful hike along the rugged coastline with amazing views. One day we will have to come back and complete the full 5 day hike. It's hard to get tired of watching the surf roll in and crash against the rocks - and even harder to stop taking photos of it. We even saw a pod of dolphins playing in the waves.... read more

Addo was a replacement for a game drive that we were supposed to do in Zimbabwe. As the last game drive on this section before we hit Cape Town it was the last chance for most people on the truck to see lions. It's a good thing we've got many more parks to go on our trip because the lions were nowhere to be found. We did see loads of elephants and the highlight was sitting in the underground hide by the water hole at night and watching the elephants come to drink. At one time there was at least a dozen elephants all playing in the water. We also saw a very rare animal as we were leaving the water hole - an aardwolf (related to the hyena and nocturnal) but we were unable to ... read more

Africa » Lesotho » Maseru May 18th 2008

Lesotho, is a gorgeous country! Known as the "Kingdom in the Sky" because it is the "highest" country in the world (measured from the lowest point if that makes any sense at all). Again, very different from other places we've been to in Africa and even better that we were here for three nights at the same place (yay, no driving). The highlight here (besides upgrading from our tent to a nice cabin - which we haven't done since Nairobi) was the pony trekking. These are the most stable ponys we've ever seen and it's amazing how effortlessly they can go up and down the steep, rocky terrain. Needless to say though, three hours was more than enough time to leave us feeling a bit saddle-sore. Of course, a three night stay in the mountains would ... read more

Don't ask us how to pronounce this one, we just call it the rhino park because that's the main animal you come to this park to see. It was great because until now we really hadn't seen many rhinos at the other parks and we were looking for some better photos. Well we had may opportunities to see rhino and other wildlife, but again no cats as the grass is just too high at this time of year. We really were lucky to see cats up close when we did at Nakuru and Ngorongoro because we haven't seen any since.... read more

Africa » Mozambique May 11th 2008

Mozambique is a beautiful country. After several weeks travelling through the relatively civilized southern African nations it was nice to encounter some real markets again and bring back some of the feeling we were missing from West Africa. Also the sea food was to die for. While the rest of the group headed out for a dhow trip from Vilanculos, we decided to opt out and stay behind. I think it was a bit of a group travel overload feeling again and we had fun eating the glorious sea food on offer at the restaurants in town. After Vilanculos we spent a night on the beach in Morrongulo where we had a massive BBQ featuring barracuda and crayfish. We had bought a huge barracuda and then were given another one for free that was the same ... read more

Swaziland is a beautiful country and one of the few remaining true Kingdoms in the World. We had a relaxing 2 nights at Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary. It's very different scenery than what we've been through recently and in many ways it reminded us a little of home with the mountains and all. Since there are no predators in the park we were allowed to roam freely and enjoy the wildlife on foot. It was just a nice relaxing time and we were able to have a little time off the truck to ourselves.... read more
