5 Kinds of Road Block
You are right about the road block type but it shoul have been six. There another one mounted by irrate youth of the area. They usually demand for money especially when they realise you are not from that part of the country. On the issue of carrying arms, the Vehicle Inspection Officers (not Police as you called them) or the Federal Road Safety Corps and even the traffic warders do not carry any arms. These set of officers have their distinct uniforms: VIO: White shirt on top of black pants FRSC: Brown Traffic warders: Orange shirt on black plants I hope you had a nice stay in Nigeria.

No way! We randomly visited 'Le Maison Bamako' today after seeing a poster for it at the Broadway Cafe. It's stunning! The owners were not there so we didn't yet meet Sonja & Gael, but now that we know the connection, we will certainly give them a call. Thanks! Happy travels to fellow Canadians :-)

Objectivity?
Hello, Regarding your last sentence ''This is one country we would never want to visit again.'' which stroke me the most i have to say a few words. I am from Serbia and I've spent 3 months last year living in Nigeria, mostly in Lagos. My experience was completely oppostie from years because I for sure, can't wait to go back and see the people I've met there. Yes, the people, the word you hardly mentioned in your text. If that's your way of visiting Africa, I am very sorry because you are missing so much. Try to meet someone from those countries and you will have a better perspective, other that just passing through the country in the car. Best regards,

Mali
Hi! I just recently discoverd your blog as I was searching for travel blogs on Mali in particular. I am from Canada, and I will be going to Mali in two weeks time with my husband (who is British). We will be staying there for some time, and may require options for our accomodation while there. Could you please send the details of the American couple you mentioned who are opening a guest house and whom you stayed with? It will be very helpful to meet some other 'Westerners' who are living there (and we really like Bailey's, so they seem like a safe bet :-). Thank you, and good luck with all of your adventures! Take care, Andrea

Did you make it to the Festival in the Desert? I love Mali, love reading your blog. When I traveled there (single woman) I found the greatest and cheapest places for lodging was simply homes of people found through a cab driver. A couple were not clean and I left, but i found it easy and very safe. Muslims opened up their homes to me and treated me with utmost respect. Take care, safe journeys, Judy

Every Coin Has Two Sides
Hi there...Everyone has his or her own experiences but I wanted to mention every coin has two sides. A bad experience or two does not really prove that the country is not worth visiting again. Infact my experience says otherwise. My visit to Nigeria was extremely good and i have very good memories of sight seeing and meeting helpful people. Moreover, I could find many options in terms of cheap hotels and travel related avenues on this website that you can also check.
