One of the things Dave wanted to do was to sample teas so that he could choose a couple of special blends to bring home. So we went to a wholesale tea market (which of course was on the other side of the city from the Indian restaurant (this meant more subway rides with more stairs). The taxi driver dropped us off at the area where the wholesale tea market was located. We only had 1 1/2 hours to find a tea distributor, sample teas and decide what to buy. Dave bought his favorite tea, which is an oolong tea and Stephane and I decided the half a 1/2 kilo of renshen (geinsing) tea. After our time in the tea market, we made a mad dash via tax back to the hostel to pick up our ... read more

On my last day in Beijing, we went to a wonderful Indian restaruant on the north side (I think) of Beijing. It took 3 subway transfers to get there and a taxi to finish the last5 1/2 mile -- oh, that's right, we WALKED the last 1/2 mile to the restaurant and then took a taxi back to the subway station to go back to the hostel. Anyway, we met Stephane there at the restaurant, enjoyed good food and good new friends. Wait a minute! Unless y'all have ever lived in New York or some other big city with a subway, you may not know what a subway looks like. So, I added some pictures -- of stairs (and believe me there are a LOT of stairs) - now you may see an escalator or two ... read more

These last two days have just seemed to melt together. Yesterday (which is my Thursday), there was a Dragon Boat Festival that several of the hostel patrons decided to attend. Some left quite early and then the rest of us left about 1.5 hours later. The festival was outside Beijing, so we had to take a bus (Bus #919) to get to the location. So, we took a taxi to the place where the buses were located for this special event. I've put several pictures to show you the crowd that had gathered. A bus was leaving every 5 minutes or so. I think this is more of a bedroom community - where the people live outside, i.e., a suburb, and take a bus into town (Beijing) everday to go to work. Anyway, the travel time ... read more

It's been a full day today. I started with an early "American" breakfast at the hostel - 2 eggs, toast, bacon and sausage and of course, coffee. One of the other hostellers told me where an acupuncture clinic was and he was kind enough to draw me a map. That's where I headed at the beinning of the morning. It was probably about a mile away from the hostel and by the time I got there, my back was really hurting again. So, when I went in, I had a note written in Chinese that stated I wanted acupuncture. When I showed the note to a man in a white coat (he was obviously an Oriental Medicine doctor), he took my hand and led me into his clinic area. I pointed where my back hurt and ... read more

This was the first day I peer out behind closed doors. The plane ride was uneventful, no one had any flu symptoms and as a result, NO ONE had to spend 7 days in quarantine. That was a big relief. In Hong Kong, where I changed planes to finish my trip to Beijing, I learned that when the coffee house states steamed milk - it's not steamed milk in your coffee - it's just steamed milk. It's time that I stop thinking that I think I know what is meant, but to ask questions, to make sure I understand what is meant. They were very nice and poured out some milk and replaced it with coffee. It wasn't quite 1/2 milk and 1/2 coffee like I had intended, but it was close. When I arrivedin Beijing, ... read more

Same Mistakes

Well - guess you can say that I have not learned from past mistakes. Still too much luggage. I always packed the kitchen sink when I had the kids, I guess old habits are hard to change. I do have wheels, but when these things weight 50# each and I have to move them, carry them up the stairs - well, you get the message. Too much weight to easily get from place to place. We were 12# overweight at the airport, thank goodness Sandy brought along another suitcase to put the excess in.... read more

My journey will begin in Beijing. There, I will be a tourist for about ten days. I plan to make my way to Shanghai and will attend school at Zhejiang Chinese Medical University in Hangzhou. When I think about this trip, I can't help but remember when I left for Denmark. Almost 10 years ago I was an exchange student for one year in Copenhagen. I had never traveled before and made a "few" mistakes regarding packing. Luggage comes to mind. We called it the "luggage from hell". . . Even though I won't be backpacking, I've learned to spend money on good luggage. So, I will post a picture of what I will not do.... read more
