Summer in Abu Dhabi..... The hottest months are probably May to September, with June, July, August being the most extreme... when I say extreme I mean it!.. It can be up to 50 degrees and is most often 45 degrees all day every day with very high humidity. So it hits you like a furnace!! In the hottest months you can barely be outside apart from the dash to your car or into an airconditioned building... a few hundred metres is the most you can walk in the middle of the day! You greet that airconditioning like a long lost friend! Retreating to Jones the Grocer for a long lunch is a good way to spend the day... followed by dinner at Pregos at Rotana, Abu Dhabi Mall .... favourite past times! Hot like you have ... read more

York to Castle Howard.... Sorry this is quiet a belated blog... this trip to England & Scotland was earlier in the year, but life has been pretty busy since, so I am just slowly getting around to putting up some photos. We escaped the heat of Abu Dhabi for some extreme snow & cold conditions in the UK. It was a big shock but a novelty to be rugging up in winter clothes and having fresh cold air and the views of snow covered landscapes. We had been living in Abu Dhabi surrounded by sand & desert and extreme heats, so the winter was refreshing, especially as we only had to endure it for a month! It was particularly freezing in York, so that was a bit miserable, weather wise, but it was nice to visit ... read more

This is actually a belated blog from our travels to the UK earlier in the year. When I returned to Melbourne I was so busy painting my next exhibition, that I didn't get around to posting them until now! So just briefly... after travelling in Italy, we arrived in London for Christmas. Everything is still heightened by our experiences of living in AD and missing the culture & way of life we are used to. So we ran around soaking up the sites, streetscapes, shops, food and having the novelty of wearing winter clothes! Although being close to Christmas, I still managed to visit the National Gallery, Sainsbury Wing, with their beautiful Rennaissance collection, as well as the Courtauld Institute at Somerset House, with ther Early Rennaissnce & Impressionist collections. The courtyard there is turned into ... read more

As the weather starts to cool down to the mid 30's.... life resumes on the streets of Abu Dhabi. These photos are from late last year...... sorry for the long delay, life got too busy, but it is nice to see these photos again. So here are some more photos of Abu Dhabi streetlife, the mosques on the many street corners..hearing the call to prayer throughout the day, and lit up at night. The sand colored skyscrapers lining the streets, a mix of old & new... Around October / November, for a few short months, the weather starts to cool a little to a civilised manner! It is still hot, but bareable! You can actually start walking along the street again, even a walk along the corniche esp in the evenings...After the long hot summer where ... read more

Edge of Oman

Driving from Abu Dhabi to Al Ain, you enter into Oman through the shared border town of Buraimi. A tall, curled, barbed wire fence lets you know you are approaching the border line...well the first exit post. However a further half hour plus drive out of Buraimi and into the mountians, finds the desolate location of the Oman border post. The approach is from the flat desert sands.. the odd crumbled down shop or residence along the way... locals squatting by the road hitching rides...trucks & utes with camels and goats , not an unusual sight. So it is unusual that all of a sudden you come across the Oman border buildings, striking as the only buildings amongst this vast desert landscape....Imposing, it feels like you are in some movie...surreal... border personnel, lines of trafic awaiting ... read more

Aaah ... The Duomo Brunelleschi's Dome, The Baptistry Doors, The Uffizi, Michaelangelo, Santa Maria Novella, Fra Angelico, Pallazo Pitti Vechio Palace, Borgello The, The Academy ... the Land of the Medici, the land of the Renaisssance ..... the list goes on. An artists dream in Florence .... We arrived to sunshine but cold in Florence, a welcome change from Abu Dhabi's Desert heat. A novelty to be wearing winter clothes again. All style in Florence, fashion & flare on the cobbled streets as everyone is rugged up in their fur coats, boots and scalves.  I love Florence, a majestic, solid, ornate city, the center of the Renaissance. Brunelleschi's dome on the Duomo, proudly and defiantly rises above the city. In respect for Brunelleschi, no other buliding has been built higher than the dome since it was ... read more

Ah Venice,...... were we really there? I have to pinch myself, yes we were, it wasn't just a dream, but a dream in reality! Every view is a postcard photo... each worn paint surface, beautiful building, heavy wooden shutter, reflection on the canals, bridges, gondolas, ornate balconies, narrow streets, exquisite shops & restaurants... too many photos are never enough. Just to wander the streets is enough.. and to keep wandering. Let alone all the wonderful Renaissance art within the gallery & church walls..... Okay, so here are some more photos adding on from my last blog "Venice with Snow"....in our brief time there we saw sunshine, rain/floods, fog and snow! Anytime in Venice is wonderfull !!!... read more

Wow Venice in the snow!........ Venice at the best of times is beautiful..... but to see it with snow and also some flooding was extraordinarily beautiful! For this treat, we had to endure some freezing weather...but after living in the desert, that only made it more exciting and adventurous. We enjoyed the novelty of rugging up. Myself...I wore three thermal tops, thermal leggings, two pairs of gloves, two pairs of socks, thermal beanie, jacket and coat!! We were happy to retreat back to our hotel for a hot spa bath at the end of each day! Wandering the narrow back streets, every view was a postcard or photo opportunity......bare with me for all the photos I have put on this blog, but for those who know me....you can be assured there are a lot more photos! ... read more

What brought us from Melbourne to Abu Dhabi....... Abu Dhabi is the capital of the UAE, and is the largest and richest of the seven Emirate states. It has a population of approx. one million, with an 80% expat population. Its origins are in a nomadic desert community with pearl diving and date plantations. However all that changed with the discovery of oil, and it developed into a city of skyscrapers and luxury shopping malls. Tourism now seems to be the direction for its future and the development of "Yas Island", as the Formula One Grand Prix circuit, with its accompanying hotels, leisure precincts and future residential sites are what brought us here. Also, the development of "Saadiyat Island" which is 500m from central Abu Dhabi, is an exciting project underway. It will be Abu Dhabi's ... read more
