Before driving back to Milan, Dad and I spent our last day in Tuscany in the beautiful little hilltop town of Siena. It was truly charming. We had some of our very best pizza and gelatto of the trip there. Overall, it was crazy but great week. Tuscany especially is a magical place, and there is just so much to explore that I know I will need to make more trips back. Tuscany 2010 anyone??!?... read more

The next day, we did another winery visit in Montalcino. Before going to the town of Montalcino, we stopped briefly in the cute little town of Piensa. It was so picturesque that they were actually filming for a movie there! We met Dad's old friend Alassandro in Montalcino, and he helped to facilitate the tour, which was good since the winemakers spoke virtually no English! Although the grapes had already been harvested, they were in the process of harvesting the olives to make olive oil. We got to have some fresh olive oil--heavenly :) After having lunch in Montalcino with Alassandro, we headed back to Valdapiata winery (where we had stayed the night before) for a tasting there. Unfortunately, our GPS got us into a little trouble. When Dad because suspicious of the directions it was ... read more

After our trip to the Il Borro winery we headed to Montepulciano, where we were to spend the night at another winery. We finally got there. This guest house was definitely the nicest place we stayed during the trip. However, it was in the middle of the winery, which made navigation difficult. By the time we got there I was getting super crabby since I had pretty much not eaten anything that day. The owner of the winery had arranged for us to have dinner in the actual town on Montepulciano, which is basically a town on a hill. Since it was dark by this point, navigation once again proved difficult. Finding the restaurant was also difficult. The dinner was excellent, and I was feeling better after getting a little bit of food and drink into ... read more

Reading Under the Tuscan Sun (a great book) has inspired me to put up my pictures of Tuscany. I warn you though, they really don’t do the place justice. I would recommend that everyone just go there themselves. I know that I definitely want to go back. It was probably my favorite part of our half-term trip. We finally got out of Rome. Late of course. The phone quest had set us back time-wise. Luckily getting out of the city wasn’t too bad. Italian drivers are crazy. That is one stereotype that I am full-heartedly willing to buy into. We had managed to get an automatic, which was a godsend, because the hills of Tuscany are not exactly the best place to be trying to re-learn stick shift. We also got a GPS, which was extremely ... read more

Athens!

Athens was interesting. The Acropolis was obviously impressive. There is also a new Acropolis museum which is very cool. They discovered fairly extensive ruins when they were building it and they have built the museum above them with see-through floors. It is pretty neat. I went to several other museums and saw enough Greek pots to last me a good long while. If you ever want to see Greek pottery or sculpture for that matter, this is the place to come! Perhaps what struck me most (and this is kind of sad) is how dirty the city was. There were piles of trash everywhere. I had heard that they had landfill issues, and was afraid their solution to this was just to not pick up trash anymore. I learned a couple of days ago that apparently ... read more

Today was a magnificent but crazy day. In my quest to make sure I saw ALL of the island, I rented a car. Yes, you read that right, I rented a car. I am pretty sure America is the only place where they care about you being 25 years of age (and I guess this means that I have no more birthdays to look forward to, bummer). Perhaps driving in Greece after not driving at all for three months wasn’t the smoothest move. Literally, definitely not. Probably figuratively so too. Speaking of crazy roads, there are many here. We complain a lot about the roads in Northern Virginia, and they do sometimes leave a lot to be desired, but they’ve got NOTHING on Santorini’s roads. Nonetheless, 10 minutes and 35 euros later, I drove off in ... read more

Well, Oia was spectacular. It was definitely the most picturesque part of the island that I have seen so far (I think on Friday I am going to get that rental car to explore the southern part of the island). Unfortunately, because of the clouds, the sunset was a little disappointing. However, the views were great. It is kind of nice since there are so few tourists here, its like we all have this common bond. We all rode the crazy bus together. (To get to Oia you have to take this jarring cliff-side road. I cannot imagine driving a car, much less a bus, along that road!) We all were trying to find the best place to watch the sun set. I loved how there is a sign painted on the side of one of ... read more

Well it is already raining in Greek island paradise. Bummer. In paradise’s defense, it was bright and sunny when I got here just a few hours ago. My room is great. I have my own balcony with a view of the water! When the sun comes back it is going to make a fab spot for reading. I already made it into the town of Fira, which is the capital of Santorini. Since it is December, it is pretty quiet. During the summer I think Santorini is pretty touristy, so right now it is a bit like a ghost town. Not to say there aren’t things open, but there do seem to be many things closed. I found a nice looking café where I wanted to eat lunch, but was told they were only serving coffee ... read more

So I realize the blog has kind of been ignored of late, but I have been busy surviving the last couple of weeks. Today was actually my last day at St. Albans, which was bittersweet. On the one hand it was only slightly heart-wrenching to leave the kids. However, given the events of the last couple weeks (which I just don't even feel like I can go into right now for those of you who haven't been in the loop) I realize that staying is not even anywhere close to being an option. The other day one of my little girls did suggest "Miss Quinn maybe you could just be our teacher... and Mr. Tebbutt could retire!" Such a wise child. Today was an odd but good day though. I received MANY hugs :) In the ... read more

Rome in a day?

Today we walked a LOT. Our tour guide Massimo met us at our hotel at 9am. He was very well informed and helped us to cover a lot of ground. However, he didn’t score big points for personality. He was pretty much a stale smelling old man who wasn’t all that friendly. He was also kind of sexist; for example, he didn’t seem to think I could step off of the city buses by myself. That was annoying. Anyway, we did see the Piazza del Campidoglio (I believe Nero committed suicide there), the Spanish Steps, Trajan’s column, the Victor Emmanuel Monument, Trevi Fountain, the ruins of all the forums, and the Coliseum with him. I do not think we would have been able to cover so many sights in such an organized way on our own, ... read more
