I'm an Iowa girl who moved to Seattle after graduating college. I'm a nurse at Seattle Children's Hospital and I love it. It's a great job and it allows me to have every other week off to do as I please. I decided I wanted to start logging my travels somehow, and this seems as easy a way as any. Let the adventure begin!

Ape Cave Adventures We packed up and departed the Vagabond Lodge this morning, grabbed some breakfast and lunch fixins at the local grocery store and got on the road towards Mt. St. Helen's National Volcanic Monument. With nothing but a map and some vague directions from my Lonely Planet book we found our way without too much difficulty. Lola climbed higher and higher into the mountains and got the chance to flex her All-Wheel-Drive muscles as the snow got deeper the higher we climbed. The views down to the Swift Creek Reservoir deep in the valley were absolutely gorgeous. As we made our way through the Gifford Pinchot National Forrest we became concerned that the road to Ape Cave would still be closed for the winter. Soon our fears were confirmed. Less than 3 miles from ... read more

From the City to the Scenic Route Monday morning we woke up and headed for the Lan Su Chinese Garden in downtown Portland. It's considered one of the most authentic Chinese Gardens outside of China. Most of the materials that the 65 artisans from Portland's sister city, Suzhou, used to assemble the gardens came from China. The gardens are beautiful to simply wander through, but there is also a tea house serving authentic teas in the same methods used for hundreds of years. The gardens often offer programs on calligraphy, music, tai chi, and mahjong. While we were there we had an opportunity to drink tea and listen to live music, but we had a lot to get in that day, so we didn't stay long. After the gardens we headed back though downtown towards lunch. ... read more

Good Morning, Portland! We woke up yesterday and were soon on the road. We wanted to hit a couple more wineries before heading to Portland. First stop was the Carlton Wine Studio. It's kind of a winery co-op of sorts. There are 8 winemakers working under one roof sharing pressers, bottling equipment, and barrel storage. It gives you an opportunity to taste a few different wineries in just one stop, but we weren't overly impressed with the tasting there. Next stop was Domaine Drouhin. Drouhin is a famous French wine maker who was impressed by the quality of grapes coming out of Oregon and sent his daughter, Veronique, to open a winery. It combines proven French techniques with the unique benefits of the Oregon soil, which produces some of the best Pinot grapes around. Drouhin winery ... read more

Ahhh. We awoke to the peace and quiet of the small town of Carlton, Oregon this morning. We were on the road at 8:59 yesterday morning and at our first winery by noon. The first stop was J. K. Carriere. It's one of my favorite wines and one of the first wines I picked out for Francis all by myself...with a little nudging from Jason at Pike and Western Wine Shop. J. K. Carriere was great. Jim, the producer, was at the winery filtering a white pinot noir called "Glass." His neice showed us around the winery as they worked. We saw the underground tunnels where the barrels are stored and walked up to a loft overlooking the production floor. Their wines were delicious. We bought a bottle of Chardonnay, which you won't likely find in ... read more

Francis called this afternoon, shortly after I had hit the snooze button for the second time, he always has a way of knowing I'm still sleeping and should get up, to tell me about his day. Francis, "Guess who I talked to today." Me, "Amy, my jeweler at Tiffany's?" Francis, "No, Ron Lachini" In my half-wake state, "Who?" "Ron Lachini." "You talked to MR. LACHINI?" Lachini Pinot Noir was one of the first significant wines in our relationship. My 25th birthday was about 6 weeks into our relationship and Francis and I got all dressed up and he took me to my favorite restaurant in Seattle, Ray's Boathouse. At this point I knew nothing about wine and we were still in the getting to know you phase of our relationship. With the help of the sommelier ... read more

Welcome to my TravelBlog! Next trip on the agenda is a long weekend in Oregon to celebrate our one year anniversary. We've been planning on going to Oregon for a while, but are finally getting the details sorted out the last couple days. My Lonely Planet Northwest Trips book has been an awesome help. It has a variety of trips throughout the Pacific Northwest that vary from day trips to month long excursions. We pieced together our trip from a variety of trips in the book. From the Fire and Ice trip I planned a day around Mt. St. Helens, from the Willamette valley wine trip we narrowed down which wineries out of the hundreds in Willamette to visit, and using the 48 hours in Portland trip I decided which highlights to include in our 24 ... read more
