I knew the basic history - that it was a highly developed area which had been ruled by the British since the 1800's, and after the British lease had run out in 1997, had been handed back to China. The "one country, two systems" policy had been established with the hand-back in order to maintain the economic momentum which continues to drive Hong Kong and makes it one of the financial ca [View Full Entry]

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sadly, before the Travelblog crash, there was a great write-up of my experiences in Macao. I didn't have any backups of this one, so it is as of now, gone for good. I don't think a re-write so long after the fact would do my experience justice, but luckily, the pictures and comments were left unharmed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [View Full Entry]

Same same, but different. We now felt like we were Southeast Asia veterans. The long drive from the airport to downtown seemed so familiar, as it was the third time doing it. We knew what this place was about, and now after two quick flirtatious nights [View Full Entry]

I can't quite seem to figure this place out. It's only an island, but big and super-developed - like a major city that just kind of stops at the water. It's hard to get one's mind around, and this place doesn't feel like Asia, but more like Europe. In fact, many of the views from the city remind me of Berlin. Jason and I were looking to visit one more country on the Southeast Asia leg of the trip, and after weighing our options, time available, and flight prices, Singapore won out. We were also ridiculously tired from our time [View Full Entry]

I did this too - and can vouch for the heat.
Lightning crackles overhead, music blares all around you as you sit on the warm beach at night, watching various fire-related spectacles while conversing with fellow travellers from all over the world. Sounds nice right? That's just a typical evening on Haad Rin beach in Ko Pha Ngan. This place is great. Ibiza, move over because there's a new contender for ultimate party island. Coming from Phuket, Ko Pha Ngan was a breath of fresh air. This place was relaxed and much less commercial with just as much (if not more) natural beauty, prices were closer to where they should be, [View Full Entry]

Hawking away Asia » Malaysia » Penang
Getting a place in Penang was quite an ordeal. We uncharacteristically decided to leave finding a guesthouse to chance when we got into town. Unfortunately, it was some sort of holiday and according to our gruff taxi driver, "all of Malaysia" was vacationing in Penang during the weekend. We kept on getting turned down from every hotel the guy took us to until we found the equivalent of the Bates motel run by an old, mean Chinese man in the middle of what looked like the most run-down part of town. Grudgingly, we decided to get a room as it [View Full Entry]

Well, it feels great to be in modern civilization again. No smells that make you wish you had a cold, things work, fried tarantulas are not considered a snack, and you can trust what you eat and drink. It's also nice to not have to slathe on toxic spray, and put on clothes with another toxic agent in the morning to keep the Dengue and Malaria mosquitos away. Malaysia is actually a pleasant surprise. Kuala Lumpur isn't what most people think of when they hear "tourism" but it's been a pretty cool place to check out. From what I've seen, [View Full Entry]

There are 216 of these in this temple!
Wow! That's really all I can say. The Temples at Angkor Wat should seriously be the eighth wonder of the world. The place is breathtaking. There are actually several temples scattered around the Angkor area that we were able to visit. We went to Bayon, Ta Som, Ta Prohm (which is where Tomb Raider was filmed), and of course Angkor Wat. There are lots of dark corners and seemingly hidden rooms. You kind of feel like Indiana Jones exploring. Some interesting incidents happened at the temples. Touts or religious people (more like a combo) like to hang out in the [View Full Entry]

We made it into Phnom Penh yesterday morning after a relatively sleepless night as we'd left our hotel at 4 AM to make the red eye flight. Cambodia is something else... For one thing, the traffic is crazy here, Basically, if it has wheels and can somehow move, you'll find it on the streets. Motorbikes are the primary mode of transportation and they'll pile as many people as possible on one of them. The record so far that I've seen is 5 people, but I was too slow with my camera. There are also animal-drawn carts, bicycles, moto-driven carts and [View Full Entry]
