This will be a short entry. The day was for the most part rainy and we had to make it all the way to Crescent City, CA for the weekend. The day started out cool and cloudy and we made our way to the Oregon Dunes Scenic Overlook. The Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area stretches for 40 miles from Florence to North Bend. The overlook is at the northern end between Florence & Reedsport. The Oregon dunes are the largest expanse of coastal dunes in North America. There was a National Forest Service ranger at the overlook and while talking to him, we found out that we could drive on the dunes in our SUV for a $10 fee. He showed us where to go, Winchester Bay, and we planned on driving out on the dunes ... read more

More on that title later. The Tillamook area seems almost out of place. The smell of cow manure hangs in the air...not enough for it to be a problem, but enough to make you think you're in Iowa. Given that Tillamook's claim to fame is their cheese, and you need milk to make cheese, and you need cows to make milk, and one of the byproducts of cows is manure, it all makes sense. We at breakfast in the room. We brought cereal and milk for those mornings where we werent' staying in a place that had complimentary breakfast. After that we headed to the nearby Tillamook Cheese Factory. If our kids could live on one food, it would be cheese, so there was no way we'd skip this place. The visitor center was really nice. ... read more

Continuing on, we first stopped at Cannon Beach to see the famous Haystock Rock. One travel book I read said there are about 6 places in Oregon that have a "Haystack Rock", but this is the most famous. We got our toes wet, jumped the waves, splashed around and generally had a great time. Leaving Cannon Beach we went further south to Arcadia Beach where we saw all kinds of cool things, like starfish, barnacles, crabs, anenomes, and sand crabs. Eric, my nephew, showed us how you can grab a handfull of sand near the water, throw it on the ground and watch all kinds of tiny little sandcrabs wiggle around until they quickly borrow back in the sand without a trace. One other thing I did here was to start taking photos of my neice, ... read more

Today we reached the beach! My sister and her kids went with us and we headed north out of Portland, then west to Astoria. There we crossed a 4.1-mile bridge over the Columbia River, with a main span of 1232 feet, making it the longest continuous truss in the world. I told the kids that but they were less than impressed. They did like crossing the bridge though. Construction of the bridge started in 1962 and finished in 1966. The approach ramp on the Oregon side curves through a full 360 degrees. Again, the kids didn't seem to care. After crossing the bridge into Washington, we headed for the Long Beach Lighthouse, the first of many we would see on this trip. The view from there was awesome. It would be the first of many awesome ... read more

PAT: We're actually back from our trip now but I'm determined to finish this. I thought Katie would write more than she has but she seems to have lost interest. If you want to hear more from her, email her and tell her how much you've enjoyed her posts and that you hope she writes more. Today we went to Mount St. Helens. While I wanted to go there, I was not prepared for what I saw. You can't begin to comprehend the massive scale of devastation until you see it first hand. Even 25 years after the blast, the massive destruction is very evident. Ragged tree stumps, blown down logs, and barren mud field below the summit still stand as testament to earth's awesome power. Out to about 8 miles, the blast travels at 670 ... read more

PAT: Ok, it's clear to me that we won't be keeping this as up to date as I once thought. I had hope to compose entries that were witty, poignant, and informative, but that takes too long. For now, you get the Reader's Digest condensed versions so I can get some pix posted. July 4th - Waterfalls & Fireworks. Today we traveled with my sister and her family along the Columbia River gorge. Unwittingly, we also became part of a 4th of July parade. I forget the names of the towns, but after our first route to see many of the waterfalls along the Columbia River was blocked, we went a different way. Soon there was a big backup. Eventually we figured out that a parade had just gone through and we were right behind it. ... read more

KATIE: I’m sorry I didn’t write yesterday. I have been busy. Well first I am going to tell you about yesterday. We went to 5 waterfalls. Then at 10 ‘o clock at night we saw fireworks................ some of them were different than Minnesota’s, like there were ones that swirled and than popped and there were orange ones. People at home who are reading this tell me if one of these fireworks I told you about you saw at the fireworks. Now for today. We are going to Mount St. Helens. Now we are in Kid valley Now were out .7 out of 9 people are going to Mt. St. Helens. The people who aren’t going are my cousin and my uncle. Both of them have to work . Earlier today I was playing my Nintendo DS ... read more

July 3 We headed out of Missoula with Cheryl driving. We soon were in the mountains as we crossed into Idaho & Washington. Again, this would be a great place for a destination on a future trip. We hit a geocache in Idaho, then crossed into Washington. I couldn’t believe how barren & desolate eastern Washington is. When I think of Washington, I think of Seattle, Olympic National Park, San Juan Island, Mt. Rainer & the coast. I don’t think of miles & miles of pasture, wheat fields, and wastelands. Still, it was very picturesque and I enjoyed the scenery. I think I was alone in this appreciation however. One very interesting stop was in Mesa, WA, where we made a potty break. This was step back in time. The city seemed to be mainly hispanics. ... read more

July 1 This trip started off like most others...we took off later than we’d hope. This time it was because I didn’t get out of work at noon, but 45 minutes later. Then at home it was a mad rush to get packed up, but we finally got going at 3:30pm, but had to stop at Target to get Katie’s glasses fixed. 4pm we finally started our trip. Unfortunately, this meant we hit rush hour on the way up I-94. I forgot just how much traffic there would be on a holiday weekend. We went 30 miles in one hour, with stop & go traffic leaving town. We got the laptop set up to watch movies and the kids were happy. We had hoped to stop at a couple rest stops in Minnesota where some geocaches ... read more

CHERYL: Jul 1 - We got off to a good start. Only 1 ½ later than our target leave time. This is good for us, since normally we run 2 hours behind. Of course there was the lake traffic to contend with getting out of Minneapolis that neither one of us had thought about....Ultimately we got to Fargo around 8:30 ish. We had snacked along the way, so prior to stopping for dinner, we drove around Pat’s alma mater. The kids interest waned very quickly though. At one point, Pat was getting frustrated, and said, “I don’t care if you guys aren’t interested. You are going to pay attention anyway!......Now, over here is the dorm I stayed in my first year”, to which Thomas replied, “....yup........” Around 9PM we stopped at Paradiso’s, a mexican place that ... read more
