ending a chapter... - From: This Is It...I Think
this is why I like reading your blog, I know exactly how you feel, is that empathy? We have been home 6 months and I think about our life in Poland every day. Reading your blog entries during this past year, helped me get over those feelings of isolation, and so thanks for letting all of us experience the European chapter of the Meatballs!

Meatballs last forever! - From: This Is It...I Think
Maria - I too hate for it to end - like a fascinating epic novel that's been rich and moving to read, with characters so ripe with life and joy and so true. I've read every word, followed every adventure, pictured each place and loved each person, especially Gunnel, of course. My voice is just one of many - saying thank you for your honesty and insight and humor and brightness of expression and clarity of voice and generosity of spirit to give us a window into your Swedish life. I can't wait to see what the Lord has next in store for you. Love, Sue

Myriad of Feelings!! - From: Home Again, Home Again, Jiggity Jig...
It's so good to have you back and thanks for giving us some understanding of the all the thoughts and feelings that accompany such a transition. I like the picture of Jeff contemplating our flag and that your St. Peter neighbors used both the Swedish and American flags. We all have so much to be thankful for and the best we can do is live each day with gratitude for the freedom, friends and family we all enjoy.

Oh to be out with the girls at a spa reminds me of a story with my captors. They had a visitor stop by. She had a black square with handles that she left on the floor. Then she walked away and was drinking out of brown bottles and laughing lots. I thought good distraction. I quietly snuck over to the curious black square - it was a bag and the zipper is open. Mmmm something smells good. What is it women wear when they go out. Oh yea there it is. That little silver tube - yes - I've almost got the cap off. (My captors have not noticed me...) Oh yea, this red stuff tasts good. Hey look it makes the fur around my mouth red too. Bummer - my captors are running toward me now. I'll just smile and show them how nice the lip stick looks on me. :o) I cannot wait for you to come home so I can show you all the neat tricks I am learning. But I'm not done yet...

Yea, I miss you too. As my captors are reading this, I'm having a hard time listening for my name (ahem...) No really, the captors trated me to a day at the spa. Loved it! I could bark, bark, bark all day long. I'm sure you will love my new do. I slept for the next week just catching up. It must be what Emma and Signe feel like when they have a sleep over. My trim has been a bit cold tho. As much as I love rubbing my belly on the snow, the -22 wind chill is a bit too much for me. ok...hmmmmm - From: New Language and Sun
Good morning all, glad you got sunshine. We are currently almost 30 below zero (without windchill). I was thinking that it was going to be tough to get out of the drive this morning. The snow has drifted almost across the yard. When I went out this morning there were 2 owls up in the trees, out front. They were doing some hooting (I thought maybe it would bring in some HOOTERS girls) but I think they just smelled my chickens and were hoping for an easy breakfast. HMMMMMM I like that language, Jorgen. Looking forward to seeing some of the family saturday in Sioux Falls. We will be celebrating 4 birthdays. Lauren, Darla, Rob and Shea. Weather is supposed to warm tomorrow and be pretty decent by saturday. Will be heading up with the thought of getting Olivia on a tube for a spin down Tuthill. She is excited. I am , also. I found the driveway "cleared out" this morning. Am really grateful, yet, don't know who to thank. Don't have any farmers around, anymore, it's all city folk owned property now. The closest tractor/loader is over 3 miles away. I'm guessing it was Jay Van Liere, he has been such a good friend from the first day at the lake, many years ago. It's also testimony to the great insulation on the house. I thought I heard the road grader yesterday afternoon, musta been a tractor in the yard. Missing you all. Maybe you'll get Skyped saturday. I don't know how that works but if it happens don't be suprised. Love to all Greg

Traditions - From: Christmas Away
We missed you all. I don't know where that "tradition"of oyster stew came from. It must have krept in after I left home! Glad to see the kids enjoying their Swedish Christmas. Someone had a pheasant hunt, saturday. Tim was the 'ringleader" and I'm guessing Robin was the "instigator". I and sister Anne heated up "stuff" and put on a pretty good spread when the 16 "hunters" showed up. It appeared they got there "limits" as there had to have been 30 plus beautiful Chinese ringnecks laid out. Brother Tim created some of the tastiest chili I have ever had. Tim was pretty sick and was dragging his tail but it sounds like everyone did a good amount of shooting. A good time was had by all. Everyone was a little nervous with John Werverka, sister Anne's boyfriend, packing a shotgun. We, in South Dakota, know how them Harley riders like to "pop one off", now and again! kidding. Christmas eve was very nice. It was one of the few times we weren't all there. In that respect it was really different. Keep the blogs fresh..........................Peace and love brother Greg

I keep tricking them into things and they fall for it. They keep giving me those crunch treats in the cupboard - but I'm onto them. I crunch it up and leave it all in a big pile. Instead I go for those frozen treats they pull out of the cold food storage compartment. They have lots of them in there and I know it! Ice cube something - I love it. I am constantly tricking them into giving me them. Oh, gotta go. I mean really go. There is new white fluffy stuff outside. I've gotten really good at launching myself off the top step and sliding into it. I have this game I play. Let's see how much of this white stuff I can stick to my fur so when I go inside to my captors house it melts and fills the house with that sweet wet doggie smell. By the way, that London canine underground connection - doesn't work - those dalmations don't know anything! Woof, woof for now, Maya

Hi - From: Traditions:Old and New
Hi, nice travel blog you have there just wanted to tell you not to forget to go to European football before you go home. it's actually fun even if you are not interested and something everyone should do when you visit Europe. Bring your kids and go on a 'IFK Gothenburg' game when the season starts in the middle of March, it tends to be a pretty cool event with much and high singing, popcorn and good mood There is no need to be interested in sports to appreciate it, me and my children loved the events when I lived in Gothenburg

It's the Julöl! - From: I'm minding the gap.
O.k. all of you lookers...are you wondering what Sweden has done to my mind to allow me to post such a hideous picture? That Swedish Christmas beer in my hand might have something to do with my judgement. It's delicious, better than lutefisk.

I enjoyed your tour to Norway with the American Thanksgiving celebration. We were first at Vigeland in 1968 and it doesn't look like much has changed since then. Twilight - From: Breaking the law...
You are so funny! and deserve mother-of-the-year. I went to the movie and loved the experience of a whole theater full of young girls swooning at "everything Edward." Kath and I spent the next day comparing notes of which charactors matched our expectations. Funny thing, K thought Bella's truck would be blue and I thought it would be black but it was (correctly) red in the movie! make and model suited us both. I want a picture of Emma looking 15 :) take care, megan

Orville, er, I mean Jorgen will come back as Swedish as they come. I can't look at my chickens or the mink furs without thinking of him. The girls will fit right in. Need something to do, learn to fish. Don't feel bad about us being swallowed in slime politics. It's all good. The parties get to waste millions of tax dollars and the citizens get to feel like they have really accomplished something buy electing another president. I really enjoy all the blather. Unfortunately, they don't show the excitement down on the streets unless it's a sound bite showing the anarchists, the regular folk and whomever else has massed for whatever reason. It is all in fun, isn't it? Hi to JJ , the kids and your new friends. Peace and love Greg

This is beautiful! When Aaron and I were in Puerto Rico this past January we met and befriended a woman who was a Mexican-American but moved to PR because her husband's family was there. She spoke both Spanish and English which was wonderful for us as she took us to vairous places on the island. When we left she gave me a Christian CD of her favorite Spanish speaking musician. Central America is lacking in PB, too. I missed it, too. Like the previous entry, give us your address and we will send you a large container. You can connect to other people through food, too! Ask around what people like to make there! Taking interest in other people's lives is a good way to connect. I wonder if anyone would let you cook with them to see how they manage there. I find people are so timid about opening up, but once someone approaches them with a need, they respond a lot.

Chuck would have loved that blog entry. Actually, I am sure that he did love it - only in a another realm... Life teaches each of us such incredible lessons as we make our way - some more painful than others. I have found that once we lose someone we love, nothing is ever the same... our hearts are never quite whole again. However, we can find joy in holding up and carrying forth the best qualities our loved ones brought to the world; it is our gift to them and their legacy to the world. JOY to you, Maria, in celebrating Chuck's life and all he meant to you and family and friends. God bless you, KK

Food shopping in Sweden - From: It's sunny!
Hi Maria- Thanks for your wonderful blogging. It makes me miss Sweden a lot. I guess it's a little strange following your adventures after being unable to reconnect with you and Jeff and the family for a few years now. However, I can really relate to your experiences so far. You're fortunate to basically already have a support system in place with your family, your new congregation, and your daggis (how great is that!) I was living in a dorm with my own room and a shared kitchen and bath with 4 other people when I was in Uppsala for a semester and it was stressful having to cook for myself with strangely named ingredients and grocery stores at first. I found a little coop-type place in Uppsala and almost cried the first time I found it, it felt so much like home. Anyway, ICA and Coop aren't Byerly's by any stretch, but they have their strengths (prices definitely not being one of them). I don't have any good advice to give on shopping, but here's a good link to an online dictionary: http://lexin2.nada.kth.se/sve-eng.html If the kids keep up their enthusiasm for the language pretty soon they'll be able to shop for you! :) Good luck. Hälsa på Jeff och barnen för mig. Tack för historier!

Again, wow. Sounds dreamy... As I scurry around here back to school shopping with teenagers, desperately clinging to my limit of $100 per pair of jeans, and try my best to support Annie (14) in her less than stellar (at least so far) high school varsity tennis try-out this week, I am reminded that life is so much bigger and richer than the materialism and competitiveness than I am surrounded by... Hi Maria! I thoroughly enjoyed reading your journal entries! You are such a creative, talented writer! It sounds as though you and the family are adjusting very well. You are so lucky that you have this opportunity to experience life beyond the Midwest. :) I look forward to reading about the rest of your adventures! Well, it is getting late here (about 11:00 P.M./past my bedtime), so I will communicate more later. I just finished reading letters that all the former 6th graders wrote to us, the 7th grade teachers. It is nice to get to know them a little before the first day of school which is next Wednesday. :) I think of you often, and my mom and I so appreciated the wonderful supper you prepared and your company. Me and you, a two man crew, side by side, we will never be divided, win or lose, sink or swim, you know we'll always be the best of friends... :) Carolyn

What a wonderful Blah, Blah, Blah! - From: Traveling to Sweden
Your trip sounded like a movie script, waiting to be written. I can just picture the English couple in front of you and the boredom waiting in lines. People are amazing everywhere and ALMOST always willing to help, especially when there are children involved. I'm sure it was great to see Mark and Carina, some comfortable faces, after meeting all of the strangers. We had a great time with them in St. Peter. Your description of sitting having a cry while looking over the sea is a keeper. I look forward to reading a description of your house and the continued journey. Enjoy! Love, Uncle Craig

I hear your voice! - From: Traveling to Sweden
Dear Maria - I so hear your voice in this delightful tale of your voyage and arrival in the land of my ancestors! My folks only spoke Svensk when they didn't want us to know - so other than var sa god and taksa mykka and 'po tor' (second cup of coffee in my family) - my favorite word sounded like "boongrandt" - don't know the spelling - but Mom said it when something was tacky - like a shabby wreath with plastic flowers - "BOONGRANDT" she would say! I hope it's not really a foul word - but it has served me well for many years! We can't wait to see a picture of your home - for we picture you there now, making a nest and making a life - and Mel and I both send our love - Sue
