Thursday --- Our train got into Liverpool Lime Street about 5:30 p.m. We walked into the main entrance and immediately spotted Kate! It was awesome. We then turned around and bought tickets to get back on the train and off at a different station. Whoops! A ten minute ride on the train followed by a ten minute ride on the bus left us at Menlove Avenue. We walked across the street and -bang- our first Beatles sight. It was where the John Lennon grew up, his aunt's house "Mendips." Now I had always been under the impression that he had grown up working class, and this house didn't seem very working class. But it was cool to see, plaque and all. A family seems to live there because it was almost 6 and a woman parked ... read more
Saturday --- Lindsey and I took the Heathrow Express to Paddington Station to meet my friend Mark. I had not seen Mark in four years and I was beyond excited! We had first met at the University of Utah when he was an exchange student and he was one of my housemates when I lived in Derby in the summer of 2001. I was kinda nervous to be honest since it had been so long but after seeing him it was just like yesterday. You don't have too many friends like that and I am lucky he is one of mine. We ran into him at the end of the Heathrow Express platform and went to the shop to buy some warm cans before hopping on the tube. Mark and his fiance Natalie had just bought ... read more
Thursday --- The scenery was beautiful as our train slowly made its to the Czech capital. Lindsey and I were in great spirits as we arrived in Prague in the early afternoon. We negotiated a taxi and made our way to the Inos Hotel, yes, a hotel! We were looking forward to it after staying in hostels. We checked in and lounged for a bit, taking showers and watching Czech TV, which wasn't really Czech since we focused on the BBC. After a couple hours we headed out to explore the neighborhood and find this pub I read about that boasted excellent views. We found the road via my handy iphone and walked up a massive set of stairs before finding Vysehrad, a castle built in the 10th century. We walked through a gate and into ... read more
Tuesday --- Lindsey and I arrived at Vienna's Westbahnhof just past noon. A new city! A new experience! Oh but what was with the clouds? And damn it was cold! I remember saying "Let's hope the weather gets better." Unfortunately it did not. Unfortunately the weather had more of an impact on my opinion of Vienna than I hoped. Damn you weather. It was only September. Our hostel, the well known Wombat's, was located a convenient three minute walk from the station on Mariahilfer Straße. We tried to check in but couldn't until two so threw our packs in the storage room and walked around the main road. We checked out a grocery store and a bank but they wouldn't exchange our forint, only dollars. Finally we were able to check in and Lindsey wanted to ... read more
I love Hungary! What a place. The people are beautiful, the food is great, and the architecture is stunning. Definitely a place to visit. But plan on wanting to return. Sunday --- my train arrived at 8:30 a.m. right on schedule. I had woken briefly when the English girls got off at Bratislava at 5:30 but had thankfully fallen back asleep. I stepped out of my carriage and ran into Paul, an English guy I met in Krakow who decided to visit Budapest last minute. I bought some tickets for Lindsey and I to Austria at the Keleti station then Paul and I took the Metro downtown. We parted ways there, as he went to explore and I went to find the 24x7 Hostel I had booked. First impressions of the place were not the best ... read more
This is the place to visit if you're ever thinking the glass is half full. It really is shocking to see what humans are capable of doing to one another and Auschwitz is a leading example of this. But places like these, as unfortunate and disturbing as they are, are necessary to visit and learn about. As the philosopher George Santayana wrote, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." And while I'd rather let the photos speak for themselves, I'll leave these few observations: The size. Auschwitz was much smaller than I had imagined, while Birkenau was much larger (Birkenau is 30 times the size of Auschwitz). Auschwitz was the administration camp while Birkenau was the extermination camp. Monowitz, the industrial camp and the largest of the three, no longer exists. The ... read more
Thursday ---- You know what I love? First class on Delta. You know what I love more? Getting first class on Delta for free. I got an unexpected upgrade, and it was awesome. I was given a menu, real silverware, and selection of complimentary wine. Oh and champagne before takeoff. This newfound sense of entitlement led to demands ("Keep my glass full!") and questions ("Is there a different way the people in economy can get to their seats?"). No, I didn't really say those things. But I was thinking them. And as my seat fully reclined into a comfortable bed, I thought to myself, "How will I ever fly coach again?" That question was immediately answered with a flight from Dublin to Krakow via Ryanair. Suddenly I was in an unbearable seat next to a large ... read more
Monday --- We landed in Sandakan just after 3 p.m. I could tell from the descent that this was a much bigger city. We grabbed a taxi and headed to the Novotel Hotel that Sherry had booked for 2 nights as her treat. We soon realized that the hotel was miles away from the city center and in a shopping mall type area. Not our scene. Fortunately, the Irish girls back at Uncle Tan's had recommended The Meridian Hotel as a nice stay when in the mood to spoil yourself. And we were definitely ready for that after being in the jungle for 3 days without running water. After some debate we hailed a cab and took off for the Meridian. Stepping into the posh lobby I noticed the Ramadan Buffet and smiled. Soon we were ... read more
Friday --- Our Air Asia flight was scheduled to depart at 10:00 a.m. and of course we were running late. Luckily we had a taxi pre-booked and asked him to hurry to BKK. He said yes and was a speed racer! We got on the freeway and zoomed past every car on the road. It was impressive. Unfortunately this was an unnecessary risk since our Air Asia flight was cancelled! An agent booked us on the 1 o'clock flight which left a very short layover in Kuala Lumpur but there was nothing we could do so we didn't waste time being worried. Luckily our flight to KL landed as scheduled and we had time to spare at the airport. We were a bit hungry and decided to grab McDonald's after walking around the airport. This was ... read more
Thursday --- The van picked us up at 6:30 in the morning for our tour to the Bridge over the River Kwai and the Tiger Temple in the Kanchanaburi Province of Thailand. We were the second ones picked up, so it took a while to grab the other members of our group before driving northwest out of Bangkok. I fell asleep for a bit and when I woke we had arrived at a World War II Cemetery for Allied POW's. We walked around and I noticed how young the soldiers had been at the time they passed. It was pretty depressing. We got back on the van and a short while later arrived at the Bridge over the River Kwai. Our tour price included admission into the war museum a couple hundred yards from the bridge ... read more
