The Bearded Monkey in Granada Nicaragua. It does not have a pool or free breakfast though. It also had another location on the lake and provides excursions there... so instead of a pool it has a lake. Really love your bios and you adventure. Keep traveling! |

I too ended up somehow with a pack of postcards I didnt really want (but felt lucky i didn't find myself unwittingly on the back of a camel paying 100pound to get off! ) I just got back from a 2 week trip to Egypt and just loved it. A short trip to keep the travel bug at bay but has only worstened the bite. Until I am on the road properly in December I will enjoy living vicariously through you. I actually got online to do my blog on Egypt but have instead spent 2hrs reading your blogs...remembering places I've been, reading about places I want to go - which is pretty much all of them! thank you for the wonderful blogs and photo's. Definitely one of my favourite places to visit and one that I'll hopefully re-visit one day. In response to sapere18's comments, the USA's involvement in a secret war in Laos is well documented and accepted - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laotian_Civil_War for a selection of independent references. Laos was considered a potential aid to North Viet Nam (as described by Eisenhower's Domino Theory). Laos' official status of neutrality (declared by both NVN and the USA) meant any involvement in Laos (by either country) had to be kept secret. The amounts of ordnance produced in the USA still found today is evidence enough. A trip to this beautiful country and reading around the subject will provide more information. Sorry pal, we don't want to offend you or anyone, that's why we didn't discuss in our text if USA did had a reason or not, if there were other countries involved or not, or if the bombing was indiscriminate or not. The fact is: Laos is the most bombed country on earth and the vast majority of the bombs came from the USA. Your country has never suffered carpet bombing, Land Mines, etc. Think about the inocent people that had to endure all the bombing and now listen to USA deny involvement or resposability for the death of their children, partners, parents and friends. Estou "vidrada" nesta história de mochilão que vc´s contaram e o momento de "reflexão" final também foi tudo de bom, principalmente pra mim.. Fiz apenas 2 mochilões e ao refletir acabei descobrindo que na verdade o que me valeu mesmo foi apenas o segundo. Explico. O primeiro, para a Europa, apesar de só ficar em albergues, realmente estava mais preocupada em "tirar fotos", enquanto que o segundo, em Buenos Aires, posso dizer que praticamente não conheci a cidade, não conseguia sair do albergue e a minha melhor recordação da viagem foi a troca de experiência com mochileiros como vocês, de toda parte do mundo!!! Isso claro depende muito do pais. Como os nossos $25 sao de media, temos paises que gastamos um pouco a mais e outros um pouco a menos. Conheco pessoas com budget de restricao total perto do $15 por dia. Nao acho que vale a pena, tem de se curtir a viagem, fazer umas atividades ali e acola. Restricao total voce so sobrevive e nao aproveita. Quanto ao seguro saude, tem um especifico para mochileiros que eu faco da World Nomads. E o mais barato que eu achei e que cobria mais paises e atividades. Nunca precisei fazer uma requisicao ainda por isso nao sei se e realmente bom, mas tive uma boa descricao do seguro atravez de amigos. |

In Brazil a new golf 1.6 flex, you can find for about R$ 52.500,00, that means, US$ 28,821. You can travel for three year with this money. How many people you know in Brazil have golfs? All of than could travel for three years! But they say they don't have money to do it. Why is that? Is just choice. The choice between having a new golf 1.6 (the cheapest model because the 2.0 golf I could travel for 5 years) and traveling for three years. We choose travel. Despite the governments desire to develope tourism, they have put so many regulations (visa, travel permit etc...) for "security reasons" (conflict with Ethiopia) that it is hard for independent tourists like you. I hope you go there anyways...it is a beautiful country with nice people:) If you are continuing to Asia from there, you can fly to Yemen and/or Dubai from Eritrea. Make sure you get a travel permit to cross Eritrea from Embassy in Djibouti. |

I will conclude that what you experienced was not just bad luck but nothing different from what you'd expect anywhere in the world. I am African and have been conned money there in Tanzania by a Taxi driver. He left me bitter as hell, but I tried to get around things. The problem is that when a mzungu gets to a third world country you expect to walk on red carpets everywhere. When we travel to overseas we are not treated with any respect and have to learn to be tough and survivors. So in essence as you continue travelling, remember money can't buy you respect, love or happiness. Deal with it and hopefully when you get back home you'll have understood what it means to be a foreigner and treat those aliens with alot more respect and love. Africa is not just the people, focus on the scenery and you'll enjoy yourself so much. With all due respect! |

I am am honestly sorry and seriously shocked about what I was just reading about your Tanzanian experiences. You must really have had a bad time there. Off course, buying a car in a country like this you must be very lucky to get a real good deal. But all the other things that happend to you are really annoying. You seemed to be pissed and you are trying to keep people away from Tanzania now. But I believe, once you start making bad experiences in a particular country, your perception gets worse and things that happen get worse and so on. On all my African travels (should be 18 countries by now) Tanzania is definitely among the top five. And this is for exactly the opposite things that you wrote: nice, friendly and helpful people (except for very touristy areas), rough countrysides, few (harmless) begging, relatively safe in terms of minor crimes and most of all welcoming and affordable. I know that these arguments are my personal opinion (after all together 8 weeks of traviling Tanzania) and can not be taken as objective but the picture you are drawing sounds like a rough generalization written out of frustration (which I have totally empathy with). But this image you give to people who have never been to Tanzania or who are maybe planning to go there is a distorted one which is not fair towards all the tanzanians who try to make foreigners feel at home in their country even without making personal profit out of it (by the way Tanzania is among the six poorest countries in Africa). The only thing I do agree with you is the fact that by now they rip you of for going to the National Parks (which had been half price last year) and climbing Kilimandjaro. But the reason for these price explosions are once again we who have the desire and opportunity to visit these places. I hope you are fine by now and are still open hearted and looking positively forward to the other countries to come. Stay safe and have a good time with the people! I know the feeling of how overwhelming it can be to have so many people want to stare at you and greet the "mzungu". I had an amazing experience with Mountain Gorillas near the Congo/Ugandan border.
