3 card monte scam at Ohio Rest Stop I feel so stupid but the con men got to me at the east bound Ohio rest stop on I-70 just west of Columbus Ohio. It's a beautiful rest stop and I had pulled in for a quick break for me and my little dog. As I was walking my dog this guy comes up and say hey that trucker over there just won it big at the casino and he's giving away $100 bills to folks stopping at the rest stop. I told they guy I didn't want any of they guy's money but he said well at least go congratulate him on his big win. I figured what could it hurt. When I got over by the semi, there's the "big winner" and two other guys. The "big winner" gave a $100 bill to each of the other two guys and then threw down a piece of cardboard and started the 3 card monte scam. Of course it was easy to pick the winner and he gave more money to the "winners". Then he gave me a $100 dollar bill and I told him I didn't want his money but just wanted to congratulate him on his big win. But he insisted I take the money. As things progressed, he said he was just having a little fun giving away some of the money and said, look, I'll give you double whatever amount you have in your wallet. So stupidly I open my wallet and within the blink of an eye he's high tailing it out of there and his three accomplices are stepping between us still acting as if they lost their money too. At that point I finally realized that all 4 of the guys were working together. I don't think it was actually truckers who pulled the scam, I think it was probably local con artists preying on tourists passing through. I did stop at the next highway patrol office I could find to report it. I don't think they will catch the scammers but I just hope other travelers will be aware this kind of stuff is going on in the state rest areas.
travel blog I can't tell you how much I enjoyed your blog, I feel that I took the trip to places we probably will never fo. Thank You!
Sorry to hear about Lizzie, only a dog owner can feel your sorrow. But you took her to great places and Lots of "Rides"
New Hampshire Lovely state New Hampshire. When in the Air Force I spent a year at Grenier AFB, near Manchester.
I was fortunate to enjoy two Fall seasons in the White Mountains. Driving thru theses picturesque
by-ways in the Fall is unbelievably beautiful. Had an opportunit to climb Mt. Washington via gravel
road and foot trails. About 8,000 ft. if my memory is correct. It was late April and we encountered
snow at about 1,000 ft. We did make it to the weather station at the peak and bummed a ride
back down on an Air Force snow- cat.
Spent some time at Lake Winnepesakie (sp) in the Summer. In spite of some language issues
we were able to "communicate" with the French Canadian girls that came in from Quebec. We felt
this was our partriotic duty since Canada was allied with the U.S. during the Korean conflict.
The Lake was nice too
I gave some serious thought to relocating to New Hampshire but the job situation was not encouraging.
Also I was engaged and Eileen did not wish to move from Detroit.
I am sure you are having a wonderfull time . Should you go thru Manchester I would highly
recommend the bar in the Graymore Hotel--should it still exist. A tear comes to my eye
as I recall the battle-cry of my squadron, which was: "Off to the Graymore".
Have fun,
Norm
Louisbourg Lynne, It sounds like you enjoyed the fort despite the weather! I swear to you that it what I remember the fort looking like 30 some years ago. I also remember the guard at the entrance saying the same thing. Loved the photos of the lighthouse. Safe travels. D
Good Blog -Brings back a few memories. Hi,
Eileen was born in Newfoundland and we had been there several times. Her father and grandfather
were schooner fishermen. There is a good dish called "Spotted Dog" and the "Caplin" fish that
wash-up on the beach are quite tasty. Wonderful people the "Newfies". They at one time had the
nickname of "Herring Chokers". Mind you bring back a wee dram of "Screech" to warm your
insides come December month. The family home was in Summerford ,on Notre Dame Bay-- Norm
We were just talking about you and Eileen today and that she was from Newfoundland. Unfortunately we won't be getting that far east. We hear Twillingate is somewhere we should visit and we thought long and hard about it, but have decided it's time to start heading south, as there is other provinces to visit. But now I know exactly where in Newfoundland Eileen was from and what wonderful people the are....but knowing Eileen I should have realized that.
Newfoundland You do such a great job with the descriptions. I'm really enjoying this trip - since I lived in Newfoundland once upon a time. Don't remember it though.
Enjoy Your Blog Thanks Lynn. Your travels and pictures are very interesting. Bob and I traveled the Maritimes on a bus tour, so we have been to some of the same places. We really enjoyed the trip too.
Looks like a great trip! I'm loving your travel blog again this year. Your photos are wonderful and your descriptions make me wish I could be along on your travels. Happy trails!
Hope your weather is cooperating. We just got back from our annual Fergus, Ontario Scottish Highland Games weekend. We got a whole summer's worth of rain in one weekend. Brought home what seems like hundreds of pounds of mud attached to the van. We were very glad to be staying in a motel instead of a tent like many of our friends. We had a wonderful time with our fantastic Fergus group of friends despite the weather and we're thankful that our two big outdoor meals were in between the showers. A newly purchased 10 x 30 pavillion with side walls turned out to be a valuable asset for the group this weekend.
Beautiful pics! Sounds like you're having a terrific trip. Steve and I are enjoying your narrative and photos. We're on the boat in Frankfort at the moment, without Reilly who is at "camp".
Laissez les bon temps rouler! A bientôt -
Pam
Thanks again for letting me vicariously experience the sights and
impressions of your current trip! Gerry and I are planning to travel to Italy this Sept. and already things are going wrong...like him getting such bad knee pain that he's using crutches. This Fri, he sees his doc.
So your words , Lin, were helpful that it's happening now and not in Dubrovnik or some remote, cobblestoned village......

Quebec City We only had one day to explore Quebec City, but what a beautiful place. I had to reach deep to use my high school french, but it did help. We stayed at a campground in Riviere du Loup (sp?) on our way to NB, but were too early in the year to see the whales in the St Lawrence.
Love your photos and commentary.
Dogs & Newfoundland Newfoundland is wonderful- When we went we were able to leave the dog in the RV. and were able to visit every 2 hours. but maybe they have changed the rules. check it out. you will love prince edward island..have a good time.
Canada When you cross into Canada they will ask if you have guns or liquor and they will want the dog's rabies vaccination records. We made Buddy a lirrle "passport" with a printout from the vet inside.
When you cross back into the US they will ask if you have citrus fruit, poultry, beef. That's when the label of origin is needed.
The potato thing is a new one to me.
Enjoy enjoy enjoy.
