Background: Fiji became independent in 1970, after nearly a century as a British colony. Democratic rule was interrupted by two military coups in 1987, caused by concern over a government perceived as dominated by the Indian community (descendants of contract laborers brought to the islands by the British in the 19th century). A 1990 constitution favored native Melanesian control of Fiji, but led to heavy Indian emigration; the population loss resulted in economic difficulties, but ensured that Melanesians became the majority. Amendments enacted in 1997 made the constitution more equitable. Free and peaceful elections in 1999 resulted in a government led by an Indo-Fijian, but a coup in May 2000 ushered in a prolonged period of political turmoil. Parliamentary elections held in August 2001 provided Fiji with a democratically elected government and gave a mandate to the government of Prime Minister Laisenia QARASE.

Fiji Sunset
Just one of the many fantastic sunsets.
After queuing up in the heat for what seemed like hours in immigration, we were glad to finally get outside into the fresh air. We made it to the Travellers Beach Resort in Nadi, just before a tremendous thunderstorm hit. (It was the end of the rainy season). Once the storm had cleared, we ventured to the bar to socialise. Found out that twice a week, entertainment was provided. Usually a show (Fire dancing & Hula) or the "Kava" ceremony. "Both well worth a go and it's free." Spent time in Nadi, doing the usual shopping etc. Found prices to [View Full Entry]

BULA BULA!

 Oceania » Fiji » Nadi
Greetings from New Zealand! I just arrived a few hours ago, so not much to write about from here yet; I'll get to that in a later post. But as for Fiji.... it was wonderful. Since this is my first post, I'll start from the beginning. The first actual realization as to where I was going and really how far away I am was on the plane from LAX to Fiji. The flight left at around 1 AM and I immediately went to sleep on the plane. When I woke up, I turned on the video monitor in front of me [View Full Entry]

Getting A Boob Job

 Oceania » Fiji » Nadi
Day 180 - Tuesday 18 March Having rained all night it was still raining this morning but then we did come to Fiji during the rainy season. After checking out we took the bus back to Nadi town. I tell you there was an amazing array of afros on that bus they were unbelievable. Checking into our hostel I noticed they were offering a good deal on the island were planning to visit next. It was so good I snapped it up. I might have to do it on my own though as Russ' bank card hasn't arrived and he doesn't [View Full Entry]

Bula

 Oceania » Fiji » Nadi
Day 177 - Saturday 15 March I´d only managed to get just over 3 hours sleep but as I had to check out at 10am I had no choice but to get up, I actually didn´t feel to bad but i´ve a strong feeling that i´m still drunk. Today we fly to Fiji and the chance to slow down again and laze around on the beach. As everything was scatered all over the car first order of the day was to pack up for the flight and give our car a quick tidyup before we returned it. We´d had to park [View Full Entry]

Bula!!!!

 Oceania » Fiji » Nadi
The first thing you learn when you arrive in Fiji is the word 'Bula'. It means everything - hello, welcome, thanks and a whole host of other things. In the first half an hour you've said it 20 times and had it said to you three times that number, always accompanied by a big smile! On the eve of our flight to Fiji we went online to find the islands had been hit by a cyclone which had caused only minor damage in most places, but had left everywhere pretty wet. Luckily despite the weather and the Fijian time the Pacific [View Full Entry]

BULA!! "Bula is heard everywhere in Fiji (literally EVERYWHERE, all the time)! It is universally used to say hello, or welcome, and is even exclaimed if you sneeze! It means 'life' and is a way of wishing good health and fortune to the recipient." Wow, what a BEAUtiful place!! I landed in Fiji last Thursday night, the 14th and came back Monday morning, the 18th. We stayed in a backpacker hostel & hotel called Smuggler's Cove in Nadi, a big touristy city of Fiji. It was dark when we got there and all I noticed was that the stars were amazing [View Full Entry]

Bula Bula!! Well for the past 10 days we have been very busy - sunning ourselves on beautiful islands - its a hard life!! Arrived in Nadi from NZ & stayed for 2 nights then sailed off to island hop for a week. First we went up to the north of the Yasawa islands to Nacula Island - stayed at a typical Fijian resort run by the villagers who live on the island. We pulled up on the boat & it was just like you see on the TV - sandy beach & turquoise sea - paradise! Our room was a [View Full Entry]

Feejeeeeee

 Oceania » Fiji » Nadi
Bula! It's the Fiji word for "hello" and it's the first Fijian word you'll learn. Arriving at night I wasn't sure what to expect. A few bula here and there at the airport. I was rushing at the airport knowing that I had to visit two offices to sort out the tours I had booked before taking the taxi to the accommodation. I was thinking that the taxi must be waiting and the staff would look at my booking quickly and send me off. I am told there is no rush and the staff were very laid back. I am in [View Full Entry]

Fiji Day 1

 Oceania » Fiji » Nadi
I arrived at Fiji airport at 5.30am after sleeping for 7 hours on the plane. I sat on a bench waiting for the Fiji experience bus to turn up... in short... it didn't. I sorted it out though and eventually found the big green Fiji experience bus. There were about 20 of us on board - all really nice characters and easy to get on with. After about half an hour the bus stopped and we all piled out and introduced each other - we then had a barbeque on the beach and just chatted. The weather was scorching and I [View Full Entry]
