Background: Fiji became independent in 1970, after nearly a century as a British colony. Democratic rule was interrupted by two military coups in 1987, caused by concern over a government perceived as dominated by the Indian community (descendants of contract laborers brought to the islands by the British in the 19th century). A 1990 constitution favored native Melanesian control of Fiji, but led to heavy Indian emigration; the population loss resulted in economic difficulties, but ensured that Melanesians became the majority. Amendments enacted in 1997 made the constitution more equitable. Free and peaceful elections in 1999 resulted in a government led by an Indo-Fijian, but a coup in May 2000 ushered in a prolonged period of political turmoil. Parliamentary elections held in August 2001 provided Fiji with a democratically elected government and gave a mandate to the government of Prime Minister Laisenia QARASE.

Smile, It's all on Fiji time

 Oceania » Fiji » Nadi
Fiji Okay, so its time to talk about Fiji. As usual I'm a good few weeks behind, infact I left Fiji nearly 6 weeks ago, and after all I've been doing in New Zealand it seems like a lot more longer than that even. Anyway, here we go... So, after over 5 months in Asia, finishing with a hectic few days in Hong Kong and Macau, it was finally tiem to say goodbye to the "first stop" of my journey and head on to Fiji. After booking the whole thing so long ago and then messing around with my flights I [View Full Entry]

Hi again all, I'm currently in Nadi, waiting for my flight tonight. I take off at 22:00 on the 27th and land at 13:15 on the same day! It's going to be a long day.. Anyhow, back to what I've been upto: Whilst on Waya Lai Lai I went on a hand fishing trip with some people I met, I didn't catch anything but most the others did - there were some really good size fish coming out too! Bounty island is quite different from the other 2 I visited, you can walk around the whole island in about 10 minutes [View Full Entry]

Bula!

 Oceania » Fiji » Nadi
Hi all, Just a quick note to let you know i'm in Fiji now! In Taupo I couldn't get on the crossing, but did a few good walks to see craters of the moon, the volcanic activity center and climbed a mini mountain (far too fast!). I arrived in Nadi yesterday, to a guy at the airport who's job seemed to be to greet anyone looking like a backpaker, stick a shell necklace around thier neck and point them towards the correct pickup for their hostel! After settling in and getting some dinner (freshly caught fish and mash!), whilst being asked [View Full Entry]

Bula! Apologies for the late entry, we've gotten lazy since we got to the US. Heres what happened in Fiiji.. When we arrived we were more than happy to discover how hot it was after 2 weeks spent in wintery Australia. We were picked up by the nice hotel man and taken to Bluewater Lodge which was in Nadi (pronounced Nandi) which was really lovely and had a pool so we were quite happy there for the next few days. Although the beach there was black sand so not as aluring as imagined. But on the monday we were off to [View Full Entry]

Bula!!

A good workout! We took public transportation and walked for the most part. it was so easy to get around
We're in Fiji! Writing from an Internet cafe in Nadi. But more on that in a minute... Our trip officially commenced on Tuesday, when we arrived in San Francisco. We jammed a week's worth of sightseeing into 35 hours-- visiting the DeYoung Museum, having tacos in the Mission, strolling the Castro, browsing at the waterfront market, checking out Lombard Street. We stayed with Jake's family-- Carol and Lyman-- who were very gracious hosts. Carol took us on a driving tour of San Francisco's neighborhoods, and they even treated us to dinner at the Greens, a popular vegetarian restaurant (w [View Full Entry]

Fiji Time

After 4 days of nothing but laying in the sun we got back on our boat....only this time is was raining out and we got soaked by the time we made it to the big boat. Then poor Jenn had to take Gravol due to how crazily the boat was swaying back and forth. We stayed at the Nadi Bay Hotel. We shared a room with 3 girls from England. The Hotel had the best fish I have ever eaten and cats roamed free which clearly made me happy (but made me miss Sage...you didn't get rid of her did you [View Full Entry]
