Background: Fiji became independent in 1970, after nearly a century as a British colony. Democratic rule was interrupted by two military coups in 1987, caused by concern over a government perceived as dominated by the Indian community (descendants of contract laborers brought to the islands by the British in the 19th century). A 1990 constitution favored native Melanesian control of Fiji, but led to heavy Indian emigration; the population loss resulted in economic difficulties, but ensured that Melanesians became the majority. Amendments enacted in 1997 made the constitution more equitable. Free and peaceful elections in 1999 resulted in a government led by an Indo-Fijian, but a coup in May 2000 ushered in a prolonged period of political turmoil. Parliamentary elections held in August 2001 provided Fiji with a democratically elected government and gave a mandate to the government of Prime Minister Laisenia QARASE.

Jealous?

Today is my second day in Fiji, and I am already a nice color of pink. I guess I sort of forgot how strong the sun is here. I did put sun screen on, but I guess I managed to forget some spots. My right shoulder and left foot are rather sore, but its ok I will live. The trip over here was not as bad as I expected. The trip over to LA felt longer, but I managed with my ipod. Nadi

Nadi was literally one long road and after our complimentary breakfast we headed out for a walk. We headed towards the beach and after a few too many kilometres in the heat we arrived at McDondalds and since it was before 10.30am we enjoyed a second breakfast! From there we continued on in the heat with the constant "Bula" being shouted at us! This is the Fijian word for hello and people were even stopping their cars in the middle of the road simply to hollar out their windows at us! After leaving the plane we went the opposite direction to all of the other passengers and headed towards the connections signs. It wasn’t long before we were in the departure area with five hours to kill. I’m amazed at how wide awake we were given that we travelled through most of the night. Fiji Okay, so its time to talk about Fiji. As usual I'm a good few weeks behind, infact I left Fiji nearly 6 weeks ago, and after all I've been doing in New Zealand it seems like a lot more longer than that even. Anyway, here we go... Hi again all, I'm currently in Nadi, waiting for my flight tonight. I take off at 22:00 on the 27th and land at 13:15 on the same day! It's going to be a long day.. Anyhow, back to what I've been upto: Whilst on Waya Lai Lai I went on a hand fishing trip with some people I met, I didn't catch anything but most the others did - there were some really good size fish coming out too! spent the last two weeks on paradise island and cant say much about it except it was amazing and teh snorkling was amazing and the tan is back with a vengance. back two weeks wednesday which is a highly scary prospect but there are several things i am lookign forward too: cheese wardrobe/drawers not having smelly dirty clothes not washing my knickers in the shower mums fish pie mums cooking in general wine cider showering in a nice bathroom my bed my pillows my house trifle chocolate cake several ice cream flavours nice clothes nice shoes cheese (again) samoa in two [View Full Entry]

Hi all, Just a quick note to let you know i'm in Fiji now! In Taupo I couldn't get on the crossing, but did a few good walks to see craters of the moon, the volcanic activity center and climbed a mini mountain (far too fast!). I arrived in Nadi yesterday, to a guy at the airport who's job seemed to be to greet anyone looking like a backpaker, stick a shell necklace around thier neck and point them towards the correct pickup for their hostel! Yasawas Islands View from the hills

Bula! Apologies for the late entry, we've gotten lazy since we got to the US. Heres what happened in Fiiji.. When we arrived we were more than happy to discover how hot it was after 2 weeks spent in wintery Australia. We were picked up by the nice hotel man and taken to Bluewater Lodge which was in Nadi (pronounced Nandi) which was really lovely and had a pool so we were quite happy there for the next few days.
