Monday, May 20, 2013 (Chengdu) The best laid plans often need to be changed, maybe even more often here in West China. If that frustrates you too much, you probably won’t survive here. If you adapt, it may present opportunity you never imagined possible. With that foreshadowing... The symposium ran overtime. Admittedly we had started a bit later than anticipated, grabbed a quick sandwich before heading to the SPPH for our meetings. Initially scheduled at 2:00 pm, we arrived around 2:30, but the CCEW team was still at the TCL hotel. The van went to pick them up and after a brief delay we began our meeting. In a rather formal looking atmosphere reminiscent of an international peace negotiation, we sat at long tables, covered in dark green tablecloths, with microphones and each team member’s name ... read more
The Taj Mahal is a dream come true. Set in the city of Agra, aka, the city of love, this mausoleum built by Shah Jahan in memory of his favorite wife is truly one of the few sites around the world that lives up to the hype. Built of beautiful marble, the Indian people work diligently to ensure its beauty remains. You're required to wear booties over your shoes and they don't allow outside food, drink, flashlight, etc. Good for the site, not so good for those puny white girls with wide brimmed doofus hats in the 115 degree heat. I woke up as Bruce banner, the heat had me green before the end of the day --- hulk smash! Anyways after a quick punch in the face (mental straightening out), I was better able to ... read more
Even after travelling in different parts of the world the airport security never ceases to amaze me. Every airport is slightly different, you can never fully anticipate what what you exaclty need to do. May be that is intentional to keep those targetted guessing, I don't know. Some places you can keep your computer in the bag, other places they have to be scanned seperately. Some require you to take everything out of your pockets, even your hankys before the body scan. In other places you can even wear your belt with a large buckle. In Cairnes I saw a guy putting his duty free through the scanners without any doubt. I myself had forgotten to drink the water in the bottle and it had nearly a litre in it. It did not cause any problems ... read more
Oh Thailand! This was probably my favorite trip we've taken in the two years we've been out here. We got a little bit of everything- a big vibrant city, northern lands with elephants, and beautiful beaches! After a brief 2 night stay in Bangkok, we flew north to Chiang Mai. I loved Chiang Mai as soon as I stepped outside the airport. The weather was reminiscent of a summer day in Northern California. Mild in the morning, hot in the afternoon, yet NOT humid, and cooler in the shade (as opposed to Nam, where even in the shade sweat is rolling down my back!). And I knew I liked our hotel when I saw the sign out by the ornate entrance that said, "No Durian". When planning out trip, Brian and I had a bit of ... read more

Borneo or ... Things that go munch in the night!
Published: May 21st 2013Asia » Malaysia » Sabah » Kota KinabaluAnd so on to Borneo. The mere mention of that name conjures up images of virgin jungle and exotic wildlife of varying shades of rainbows! How naïve! We arrived at KK from KL - I hope you are now ‘up to speed’ with the acronyms, dear reader! - and were surprised to find a fairly modern, compact and business like town - at least on the surface! The transport system is chaotic as we were to find out later. Most travel around Sabah is best done by air as there are precious few roads. Those that there are tend to be pitted with craters or simply run into stretches without any kind of surface whatsoever. There are four wheel drive ‘taxis’ which run between the main towns - KK, Kudat, and Sandakan! We had sat and ... read more
On arrival at Male International Airport which is situated on one of the islands of the Maldives, we were smoothly transferred to a nearby seaplane port for our 30 minute flight to Vilamendhoo Island. There were a number of 18-seater DeHavilland Twin Otter Seaplanes waiting at the port but ours was delayed so we had a little wait before we boarded. It had also started to rain heavily whilst we waited to board but luckily it eased off before we took off. Once on board the seaplane quickly glided across the ocean and we had tremendous views of numerous little islands, as well as a clear view of the capital town of Male. We were lucky as the seaplane transfer gave us an amazing perspective on the atolls, islands, reefs and lagoons as we flew low ... read more
Ho Chi Minh City - The City of museums and saigon green
Published: May 20th 2013Asia » Vietnam » Southeast » Ho Chi Minh CityUp bright and early this morning, for our bus to Ho Chi Minh City. As per usual (we should have know really as everything runs on asian time here... late!), it didn't arrive on time, only a mere 2 hours late and we were off. It was another sleeper bus, so basically we got to lounge around in beds all day whilst we were whisked miles away to the south. After battling through the rush hour traffic we made it to Pham Ngu Lao, one the the busiest places for travellers to stay in the city. We easily navigated the small alleyways or 'gangs' , getting to be such pros at this, and found our accomodation for the next few nights. We were given a 4 bed dorm room even though there was only 3 of ... read more
May 19, 2013 (Hong Kong All checked in and ready to board at the HKG Airport. Built on the island of Chek Lap Kok, an island largely reclaimed specifically for the construction of the airport itself. We have a 3 hour flight to Chengdu and are all looking forward to meeting up with the SPPH ophthalmology team there. The airport is an impressive layout, one of the largest and busiest passenger and cargo airports in the world. Very new and modern, it has all the amenities one could wish for - from Jimmy Choo shoes to Swatch and Starbucks. We fly Air China, which from previous experience has always been a pleasant service oriented carrier...i.e. they serve lunch!... read more
The power of saying yes: the beginning of our India trip
Published: May 19th 2013Asia » India » National Capital Territory » Delhi7 months ago a friend asked me if I would like to visit India with her, I said yes, and here we are. the flights were fairly decent and I was not sad to say goodbye to the self induced stress sickness I had fallen prey to the day before I left ( fyi: malaria pills + major stress + a previously empty stomach filled with dill pickle chips will give you one of the worst nights of your life). Amsterdam gets my star airport award as they are now officially the best international airport I've esee experienced. I was able to meet up with E in Amsterdam and say hello in person to a truly wonderful, brilliant person I haven't seen in too long. The flight to Delhi had me sitting next to an older ... read more
