Monday 05 March 20.00 Hours After another walking tour and watching the Jaisalmer day pass, it’s time to find some grub I treat myself to an up market meal at Nachana Haveli Nachana Haveli Heritage Hotel on the edge of town. In I tramp my rups as good as anyone else’s and take a seat up in the rooftop restaurant. I have a couple of fresh lime sodas and order the Keema Mutton Matar (Goat with peas) all mutton in India is goat. Dal Makhani (Black Gram cooked overnight and at the last minute cream & butter is added) you can get Dal Makhani at home in some Indians but not like this. Jeera rice and some papads. The rooftop is cool as the temperature drops swiftly at night and we have some traditional Rajasthani musicians ... read more
Met up with Nick Turner at the KFC here in Kupang which is the only American fast food restaurant for hundreds of miles and the only one on the island of Timor. Since we were there decided to grab something to eat which was not very satisfying compared to all the delicious Indonesian you food you can get for a third of the price. We headed out on Nick's bike to find the museum of East Nusa Tengarra using some great open street maps Nick had downloaded to his Garmin GPS. We arrived at the museum and asked some of the guards if it was open and were led to another building by one of the security staff. The museum was not in the best of care with damage to the roof and rusted metal on ... read more
Day 2 – Woke up at 5:30 am. I couldn't fall back to sleep so I laid around until 6:30. It was extremely hot in our room because our air conditioner was broken. I couldn't take it anymore so I got up and started to wander around the guest house. We had a nice balcony on our floor and I got to see some of India for the first time in the daylight. For being so early it was pretty hot already. The high for the day was around 95 degrees. I wandered around a while and headed back to the room to take a shower and try to get ready without “waking up” Jess who really hadn't even been able to sleep yet. I made it downstairs around 8 and met up with Dave, Megan ... read more
The time has come to take a break; to unpack my bag and stay awhile. I will soon retreat into a meditation center in the north, where I will focus all of my attention on my breath – and not what’s happening on Facebook. As such, don’t expect to hear anything more from me for at least two months. I’m sure that I’ll flood your inbox with stories when I’m back in the “real world,” but for now, don’t worry about me. Trust that I am safe, and happy. Instead of sending me an email when you think about me, send me love and light. Take care.... read more
There are tons of great things about the Philippines, but by far away the best of them is the fact that inhabitants are called Filipinos. I like the fact that they thought ‘Well, the Philippines is a nice name but Philippino would be a bit of a bugger to spell. Let’s just settle for Filipino.’ It makes things a lot easier for writers like me. The Philippines isn’t part of the traditional backpacker’s route. The country, which consists of over 7,000 islands, lies to the west of Vietnam and to the north of Indonesia. Its location, and the fact that the country is only accessibe by plane has to be the reason that most backpackers stay away, because the Philippines offers plenty in terms of sun, sea and nightlife. Unfortunately, while the Philippines can offer breathtakingly ... read more
The main attraction of the coastal town of Mui Ne is the sand dunes. White ones and red ones. We arrived here Sunday afternoon and found a great little hotel with a pool. Very welcome after a long bus journey. The hotel was right on the beach front but the beach or sea wasn't very inviting at all. Probably been to too many beautiful islands recently! We took a short walk along the one road that makes up the town to check out the bars and restaurants so we knew where to go for dinner later that night then spent the rest of the afternoon by the pool. On Monday we joined up with two American girls and hired the hotel's jeep and driver to take us to the sand dunes about 25 kms away. First ... read more
Well it’s day 2 in Nozawa Onsen Japan and I’m differently feeling my age!! Snowboarding uses some muscles you never knew you had… Yesterday was a great day, even though my 3am arrival meant I only got about 3 hours sleep in a proper bed. 7am breakfast was on with bacon and eggs plus more toast with Vegemite which every table had one jar sitting on it (can’t half tell an Aussie owns this place haha). After breaky it was off to get kitted up with a board at the rental shop, which is where Mark the owner of the of the hostel was. Had a bit of a catch up plus gave him the big jar of Vegemite I promised I’ve bring up for him, he was stoked… Off to the slopes for the first ... read more
