Voor de eerste en dus enige keer tijdens deze reis hebben pa en ik “niks” ondernomen.
In voorbereiding voor de vermoeiende reisdag die maandag en dinsdag voor ons liggen hebben we ons wat extra relaxruimte gegund.
Wel zijn we naar het Hard Rock Café geweest om een uitgesteld diner te nuttigen. Voor de 2e keer een 1,5 km wandelen doet onze knieën (zelfs die rotknieën van pa) goed.
Op de uitgerekte markt van Batu Ferringhi zijn allerlei “merk spullen” te koop. Een groot gedeelte van de toeristen zal nooit het echte "oude" Batu Ferringhi bezoeken, omdat het vertier zich afspeelt langs de weg. Overdag ligt op het strand of in de hoteltuin. Velen maken uistapjes over het eiland, want Penang is een eiland om je nooit te vervelen.
Helaas kun je snorkelen wel vergeten. De vooruitgang eist hier ook zijn tol. Batu Ferringhi ligt aan een drukke scheepvaartroute en heeft aanlandige wind en stroming. Daardoor wordt het zand voor de kust omgewoeld en drijven er kwallen naar de kust.
Watersport is er volop. Je huurt een jetski per kwartier of langer en je bent weg. Er varen bootjes naar o.a. Monkey Island (is geen eiland, maar een stuk strand), waar je wel kunt snorkelen. Je kunt parasailen (met een parachute voortgetrokken worden boven het zeewater), of een bananaboat- ride maken. Verder kun je catamarans huren, surfplanken e.d. Vaak zijn deze attracties, bijna alle gerund door Indiërs (hetgeen mij al een onveilig gevoel geeft!) niet van het hotel en neemt men het niet zo nauw met de veiligheid.
Vannacht de finale van het wereldkampioenschap voetbal kijken hier op het strand. In de hoop dat Nederland het toch wel sterkere Spanje verslaat zetten we de wekker op het plaatselijk nachtelijke uur van 2.25 uur! Dit geeft iets meer druk op onze lange reistijd maandag en dinsdag, maar ja….Nederland wereldkampioen zien worden is waarschijnlijk een eenmalige gebeurtenis! Toch?

In preparation for the grueling travel day on Monday and Tuesday before us, we have awarded some extra relaxationtime.
Well we went to the Hard Rock Cafe for a postponed diner. For the second time, a 1.5 km walk makes our knees (even those of rotten ones of pa) ready for the task ahead.
On the stretched market Batu Ferringhi are many "brand stuff" for sale. A large proportion of the tourists will never visit the real "old" Batu Ferringhi, because the entertainment takes place along the road. During the day is on the beach or in the hotel garden. Many make trips on the island, Penang is an island you’ll never get bored.
Unfortunately, you can forget snorkeling. Progress also demands its toll. Batu Ferringhi is located on a busy shipping route and onshore winds and currents. This makes the sand churned off the coast and there jellyfish drifting towards the coast.
There is plenty of water sports. You rent a jet ski per quarter hour or longer and you're away. There sail boats to places such as Monkey Island (no island, but a stretch of beach), where you can do snorkeling. You can go parasailing (with a parachute pulled from the sea), or make a banana boat ride. You can also rent catamarans, surfboards, etc. Often these sites, almost all run by people from India (which makes me more insecure!) are not so close to safety.
This night we’ll be watching the finale of the World Cup here on the beach . In the hope that the Netherlands will beat the favorite Spanish team, we set the alarm on 2.25 AM! This gives a little more pressure on our long journey Monday and Tuesday, but hey .... The Netherlands becoming world champion is likely to be a wondrous event! Right?
