Hoi An Ancient town is located in Viet Nam’s central Quang Nam Province, on the north bank near the mouth of the Thu Bon River. It is a well-preserved example of a small-scale trading port active during the 15th to 19th centuries which traded widely with the countries of Southeast and East Asia and with the rest of the world. The town reflects a fusion of indigenous and foreign cultures, Chinese, Japanese & later European influences. It was a dull rainy day but the colourful boats along the waters edge made up for the grey skies. We walked across the lantern bridge and then the Japanese bridge and the colours continued with a Chinese Temple, colourful houses, local markets selling their wares. This was Huy’s 2nd tour, he had responded well to requests for some tours ... read more

Hoi An, this little city was once considered the best port city for trade by Chinese and Japanese merchants. The Hoi An lantern festival is very popular but during the current Covid situation the number of lanterns and visitors were much reduced but despite that it was still very magical and with a boat trip along the river where Hieu & Spring set two lanterns into the river, giving special offerings and good wishes to particular members of the voyagers on board. A very poignant moment. This tradition started centuries ago, where on the full moon people from all over the region would come to participate. Our tour ended in a beautiful coffee shop where we had views across this ancient town.... read more

Whilst there are still traditional basket boat weavers, many fishermen have updated their vessels. Modern versions of basket boats use fiberglass, canvas and composite. It was so calming & relaxing as the boat meandered through the small canals of the estuary. The Nipa palms are harvested for so many products including sugar syrup from its floral and fruit stalk; thatching materials, cigarette paper, and construction materials from its leaves; as well as food and dessert from its fruits, the stalks are also good as an aid for learning to swim as they are very buoyant. Nipa palms grow in soft mud and slow moving tidal and river waters that bring in nutrients. The palm can be found as far inland as the tide can deposit the floating nuts. The plant will survive occasional short term drying ... read more

For a long time, the enjoyment of sipping a hot cup of coffee while watching the hustle and bustle of life on the busy streets has been popular for Vietnamese people. This habit has gradually become a part of culture, and is today a lifestyle which is known as “the coffee culture”. This kind of drink originated from the Western World, brought by the French to Vietnam during colonial times. At first, this drink was only made for aristocrats, French officials, or the intellectual class in the cities. It then gradually became a popular drink among ordinary people. Today, Vietnamese coffee is not only known for being one of the most produced in the world, but it has also created its own particular character through the way it is enjoyed by drinkers. The Vietnamese traditional dress, "Áo Dài", is one of the most elegant and beautiful dresses for women. It’s very simple, consisting of a close-fitting blouse, with long panels in the front and back, that is worn over loose white trousers. As a Vietnamese girl who loves to travel abroad, sometimes I bring an Áo Dài to travel with me. Whenever I wear it, my Áo Dài always attracts friendly looks from both locals and travelers. I once got a message from an Irish poster in the Thorn Tree travel forum. He wrote to me "You must get a wonderful reaction from the local people when you wear your Áo Dài. I think you would stop the traffic, if you were to wear it walking down a street in Ireland." An Áo Dài can be worn with ... read more

Just the other day, someone asked about my best sandwich ever. I have given it some thought, and here are my answers. I had to categorize my answers, as the sandwich spectrum is just too broad. Best Banh Mi Without a doubt, it was in Hanoi, about a block from my Old Town hotel. I have been there on two different trips, and the taste and quality are outstanding. Cars drive by, run in and pick up a "to go" bag, so it must be well accepted by the locals. The pork banh mi has moist meat, flavorful condiments, and the best pickled radish. One sandwich is not enough, but two is way too much. Best Burger Hands down, the best burger we ever had was at the El Tovar Dining Room at the Grand Canyon. ... read more
