So, here we are in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) on our way to the beach. Spent a few days in Hue and Hoi An. Hoi An is charming all right - at night. During the day you get so sick of touts - "please buy something" and people following you around to speak english (i.e. pretend to be interested where you are from then ask if you want to buy clothes) or get you to go into their shop. We just happened to be in Hoi An for their lunar festival once a month. It was very cool to see all the games played in the street which they close to traffic. ALso lots of dancing and singing. Saw a weird game like Bingo where the announcers were singing, it was like a performance/dance. Very cool.
Ken wanted to tout the touts, get a canadian flag or something and go up to the shopkeepers and say - hello, first customer, how much you buy????
They honk their horns incessantly here also to get people to get out of their way. It is very unnerving. My jangled nerves!
After the whirlwind of Hoi and and Hue (very cool temples and pagodas) and I didnt' even buy anything in Hoi An!!! we are looking forward to the beach.
Anyway, I'll write more when I get a chance. We paid $10 USD to get into the business class lounge for our 3 hr stopover - best money spent - free internet, drinks, nice seats! Also got to wait in Danang in business class b/c only seats available on flight -- $75 instead of $55 - we thought it was a good deal.. Got some weird looks from some snotty rich americans... oh well.
Hope all is well, write soon!
Love Caroline (and Ken)
