Background: The conquest of Vietnam by France began in 1858 and was completed by 1884. It became part of French Indochina in 1887. Independence was declared after World War II, but the French continued to rule until 1954 when they were defeated by Communist forces under Ho Chi Minh, who took control of the North. US economic and military aid to South Vietnam grew through the 1960s in an attempt to bolster the government, but US armed forces were withdrawn following a cease-fire agreement in 1973. Two years later, North Vietnamese forces overran the South. Despite the return of peace, for over two decades the country experienced little economic growth because of conservative leadership policies. Since 2001, Vietnamese authorities have committed to economic liberalization and enacted structural reforms needed to modernize the economy and to produce more competitive, export-driven industries. The country continues to experience protests from the Montagnard ethnic minority population of the Central Highlands over loss of land to Vietnamese settlers and religious persecution.

I decided I wanted to spend Christmas on the beach, so I journeyed to Nha Trang on the East coast of Vietnam, sitting on the South China Sea. Having not been completely put off by bus travel, I again decided to travel by Phuong Trang tourist bus. It was a nine hour journey, but through the night and I managed to get plenty of sleep along the way. Arriving in Nha Trang at 730am, it gave us the whole day to explore the city. Nha Trang is a beautiful city, surrounded by mountains and with the clear turquoise waters it is [View Full Entry]

Day 13 Asia » Vietnam » South Central Coast » Nha Trang
Our last full day in Nha Trang was a busy one, so much so that we might all be in bed by 8pm! I (it's Kylie here) started the day at 6am with a trip around the local food markets with the hotel chef. It was very interesting and I sampled and saw lots of great, fresh produce - the pork belly this morning was piping hot and unbelievable as were the freshly made fish patties. Fish, frogs, eggs of all kinds, beef- the darkest coloured beef I have ever seen, it looked a bit like venison, wonderful pork, amazing yellow [View Full Entry]

Day 10 Asia » Vietnam » South Central Coast » Nha Trang
So it must be day 10 now (feels like a month already though). Spent yesterday at the beach, a private bar / club beach where hawkers had to yell their wears from beyond the 'No Hawking' signs lol. Kylie had her hand and toe nails manicured and painted and a foot massage which even though it cost about $15 she thinks she could have got it cheaper. A local lady selling fresh lobsters, cooked on a tiny bbq-thing right in front of you, was yelling out to us and the temptation to have a whole, fresh lobster and 8 scallops all [View Full Entry]

Day ? Asia » Vietnam » South Central Coast » Nha Trang
Yesterday we visited the Cu Chi Tunnels which pretty much took up the whole day. We engaged our own driver for the day so there was plenty of flexibility with toilet and food stops for the kids and they could be as loud as they liked. It worked out well as when we arrived at the tunnels, a guide took us around (with another group from Mt Gravatt can you believe) free of charge. I have to admire the ingenuity of the Cu Chi people as the underground system they constructed was amazing, and what's more, it clearly worked for them. [View Full Entry]

David and I arrived in Vietnam a week ago via a bus with a driver who was driving like he was possessed by the devil and a boat from Phnom Penh down the Mekong river to Chau Doc. Some bright spark put my rucksack down practically in the water when we got off the boat so I was dripping muddy Mekong river water all down me. Chau Doc itself was a pretty non descript town with nothing to do so we only stayed there one night in a room that was plagued with insects due to another bright spark leaving the [View Full Entry]

Dalat - Coffee plantation

Well, a few months back, I decided to head off to the seaside for a week and take a well deserved rest from teaching. Problem is, I've been too lazy to blog recently due to the fact that I'm surrounded by what is to me the horticultural equivalent of pornography (yes, my glorious and beloved palm collection), stacks of cold beer and an entire harem of 6,236 beautiful, Vietnamese women. Anyway, now that I have a few minutes spare I will publish this blog before something else comes along and distracts me!!! I decided to take a trip to Nha Trang [View Full Entry]

The Tram Huong Tower...

We all really enjoyed the laid back atmosphere and cool climate of Dalat. While we were loving getting around in t-shirts in 20 degrees, the locals were breaking out the winter gear including beanies, mittens, scarves and down jackets. Our hotel was appropriately named the 'Dreams' hotel and was pretty much the perfect hotel. Beautiful rooms, spotlessly clean and with an owner who would quietly do anything for you. Taxis would materialise out of nowwhere, bus timetables were recited from memory and tickets booked with a phone call, with the added bonus that you just new she was quietly ins [View Full Entry]

Before I start for those who have commented on my spelling (not naming names - Peter Timothy Hudson!) I dont have the time to re read what I have typed and we all know I cant spell (still got first for my diss tho so works for me) Right so after arriving to a very hot Vietnam we booked a trip to the perfume pagoda which involved a poor little woman rowing us 1 hr up a beautiful and calm river for us to then walk hundred of steps to see a shrine like thing in a cave - a bit [View Full Entry]

Mully and I were set and on the way to Vietnam and it was only another 6 hour bus journey, with a bus driver who was driving as if he was possessed by the devil. Just before we crossed the border we stopped at a small restaurant for people to get some food. I busied myself with finding the nearest bathroom and Mully stayed on the bus only to witness a charming american fellow get on in a bit of a huff, following what sounded like smashing of plates. He sat down and a young Cambodian waitress came on and offered [View Full Entry]
