My latest stop, Nha Trang is described in Lonely Planet as Vietnams biggest, brashest beach resort with a reputation for wild nightlife, so given my love of the sunshine and partying, I thought I'd best check it out!! The beach itself is a really long stretch of sand that looks a lot prettier from a distance than close up. The sand itself is unfortunately a bit grainy and because of the wind there were a lot of waves - so no calm turquoise water for me!! It's a bit of a strange place really as half of it is a busy Vietnamese city - apparently the 4th biggest city in Vietnam. The other half is a beach resort with the usual tourist shops, restaurants and bars. It was quite cool though seeing the two different worlds co-existing.
We arrived at Nha Trang at 6.30am after a really comfortable journey on a sleeper bus. It was Christmas Day and me and Rebecca wanted to do something fun to celebrate, so we booked ourselves onto a boat trip later that day!! The boat trip we chose was called Mama Linh's and it was supposed to be the most outrageous boat trip, so
we packed a small bottle of vodka and got ready to party!! The boat trip ended up being fantastic!! We met so many people and the weather was beautiful!! We stopped off at a beautiful island, that reminded me of a Thai island and I plucked up the nerve to do parasailing. I'm scared of heights, so I was petrified, but it turned out to be very relaxing and peaceful up there! The view was amazing. I think my fear of heights is gradually being cured!! Who knows maybe one day I will be able to do a bungee jump or sky diving after all.
That night we met up with everyone from the boat, but I think I drank too much in the daytime (me and Rebecca drank a bottle of vodka between us and I had some beer & wine as well) as by 10.30pm I was exhausted and headed home to bed, leaving Rebecca out partying until the early hours of the morning. Not like me at all - usually I have to be dragged home!! Daytime drinking really does kill me!!
The next 3 days in Nha Trang were very chilled out. Me and
Rebecca just spent out our days wandering around exploring and eating lots of yummy food. Boxing Day the sun was still shining, but after that the sun disappeared! A beach resort without sunshine is rubbish!! Thankfully we had cable TV, so if we got bored, there were always plenty of movies on hand to watch.
On our last day we headed off to some hot springs to soak in some mud, which was so much fun!! For only 60,000 dong (2 quid) you get about 30 mins soaking in mineral mud, then you have to shower off before heading to the hot mineral water tubs that were amazing - like the best bath you've ever had!!! Lastly you can go for a swim in the hot mineral water swimming pool or get your back massaged by the hot mineral waterfall! It was all sooo fantastic. Unfortunately my camera chose the moment we got to the mud bath to die, so I have no photos of me and Rebecca covered in mud. After all the lovely water treatments we both headed off to the massage area to get even more pampered. Vietnamese massage is a bit different to Thai massage
- it still feels quite brual, but there seemed to be a lot more attention on the back area and at one point the tiny Vietnamese woman doing my massage walked over my back, which felt really strange - it seemed to work though. It's amazing how strong these tiny women are - my masseuse was under 5ft and must have weighed about 6-7 stone max!!
All in all I enjoyed Nha Trang, although I didn't really do many of the things that most people come here for i.e. lie on a beach and party all night!! Still after Ko Pha Ngan I think I've had enough partying for one trip - I don't think my budget could cope with any more!! Plus I've still got Cambodia to come, so I think I'll beach it up there for a few days as the weather is supposed to be a lot better than here. Fingers crossed eh. Next stop, the supposedly crazy city of Saigon, can't wait!!!
