Sample Embroidered CardInspired by the talented Alicia Freile, the class responded well to a simple stitch card. I even caught the volunteers making them!
My main assignment here in Hoi An is running a workshop for some of our gals in the disabled group (aka the Sweethearts). Our goal is to make a small product line of arts/crafts to eventually be sold online. Giving them the ability and skills to create a small range of quality crafts, we hope to provide them with a sustainable income, increased self-confidence and independence in their lives. The workshop runs 4 hours a day/5 days a week, but my schedule has been more like 24/7. It's been quite the challenge to say the least. Coordinating translators, seating, wheelchairs, ramps, tracking down supplies, and most difficult, what on earth could I teach them...and what could they master on their own, in one month. The skill levels and physical/mental disabilities vary greatly making it even more challenging. But dozens (and dozens...and dozens!) of iced coffees later, I'm feeling confident that the workshop has been a success. In addition to some handbags and knitted scarves a few of the ladies already make, I have added a mix of handmade notecards and a unique vase designed from chopsticks. I am very proud and grateful for the time and dedication everyone has put into

Great work Sherry as always... I love the chopstick vase. May I just add that the online business is a great idea, and I have been amazed that the local post office in Hoi An was regimental in getting my parcel home (UK) in 5 days! I wish the project much luck....Sweet Hearts all of you.
that's my little task-master. I love the chart. A chart is a beautiful thing!! i wish i was there to help, looks super fun!
I LOVE THE CHOPSTICK VASE!!! What a creative idea. Though you are only there for a short time, you know that you are leaving the people you have met with knowledge and skills that we help them to continue on with the work you have shared!
"Disability is not a brave struggle or courage in the face of adversity. Disability is art. It is an ingenious way to live."
Beyond argument the Sweethearts demonstrate this truth.
I can't wait to hear about this experience in person. With the beauty of art you brought them a creative experience that I'm sure you both will never forget. You rock my little squirrel!
Love,
~L xoxo
Sherry- I just wanted to take a minute and tell how great I think your mission is and how lucky I feel to have met you! I'm sorry we weren't able to meet up in Hoi An but hopefully can get overthere to catch up with you soon. The courage youor friends in Viet Nam have is amazing, a true inspiration to anyone. Take care of you and keep on keepin on. -Noel
