Hanoi in summer 2009In October 2010 (next year), Hanoi will celebrate the Millennium Year anniversary. This board is placed outside Thống Nhất park for propaganda of the event.
My summer this year is pretty quiet. We experienced the hottest June ever recorded. Some days in Hanoi the outdoor temperature reached 45-46°C with very high humidity (often it's 30-38°C during the summer time). Then it rained almost every week in July and August. I didn't dare to go anywhere close to the mountains, as I was concerned about the risk of floods and landslides.
Also the pig flu (A/H1N1) is spreading here with the number of patients increasing every day. The warnings that we hear on TV or see on the webpages are to "avoid the crowds". Some people are so panicked that they rush to the hospitals and insist that they've got the virus, although they don't, while others feel normal, but the masks are sold out quickly and getting expensive as well. In an article I read yesterday, it was said that the Nội Bài International Airport looked like a hospital as everyone wore the masks.
Hopefully I can travel again if my father will be alright after his surgery next week. In early September I will have a day off work, as we celebrate the Independence Day (2 September). I am still seeking a travel

companion to join me on some trips for sharing the costs, as I plan to go off the beaten path in Vietnam.
When I was back home from the trip in Điện Biên Phủ city at the end of June, my mother told me Michael Jackson just passed away. I have been very sad since then and read all information about him. His songs always remind me of my student's life and the first days when I started learning English. At that time, we used cassette and video tapes and his songs were very easy to understand. He is so special that even my mother knows him, although she never cares about any other foreign singer. I will remember what Paris Jackson said about her father and I think that not only music but the children are the most wonderful works that Michael Jackson left in his lifetime.
Good bye Michael Jackson!I read all information about him. This is an article about his unreleased song "A place with no name" (website ngoisao.net).
The construction site where I workIt's quiet here (no workers, no activities), as the project has been suspended for a while. Now we are employing a new contractor to resume the works.
My 3-year-old nephewI meet him every weekend when his parents take him to our house. His mother (my sister) is pregnant so we will have a little girl this November.

Thiền Quang lakeThis is one of the lakes in Hanoi and it's near my house. Sometimes I take my nephew to this lake when he visits us at the weekends.

Entrance gate to my office This is the way into the construction site where I work. Everyday I feel so nervous when riding my motorbike up and down this slope as it looks so dangerous.

I really enjoyed this blog as it brought back so many happy memories of my time in Hanoi. I think it makes the point that good 'travel writing' does not have to involve travelling a long distance - one can be a traveller even in one's own city.
Your nephew is very cute! Our friends in Hanoi also told us it had been very hot. How does one vote for Halong Bay?
Thanks. You can vote for Ha Long bay at website http://www.new7wonders.com
Thank you for your blog and the nice photos. The increase in temperture might have something to do with the expected coming of "el nino" (south pacific weather anomalia between South america and south east asia). Scientist are still not 100% sure but they say that it is very likely to be happen around the end of this year.
If this happens the weather around the globe can be different.
I wonder if also in other places the weather is much different compared to those of the last years.
kind regard walter
