Weekend 12 to 14 September 2014 - My father organized a 3-day trip for our family and his friends to Kim Bôi hot spring which is located in northwest Vietnam, 80km away from Hanoi. It is exactly 6 years since my first trip to this place and I was happy to go back and see how it has changed. Kim Bôi hot spring is a popular destination for north Vietnamese from September to December, when the weather is cooler. Its mineral water is suitable for drinking, bathing and useful in medical treatments. It’s not an open air stream. The mineral water is pumped into public or private pools and you choose the pool. A ticket for public pool is VND 50,000 (about US$ 2.5). There are private pools for 2 or 13 people and they are ... read more

We arrived in Dien Bien Phu after a fairly long day on the bus from Oudomxai in Laos. Awkwardly we were on a sleeper bus for the day, which meant that you could only lie down, no sitting option. You never know what species of bus you're going to get in SE Asia, a fact of life we're trying to embrace! Crossing the border at Tay Trang (most northern crossing into Vietnam from Laos) was a piece of cake. We had heard that people had some difficulties with the next border crossing down, but as we were on the one bus for the whole trip it was very streamlined. On arrival at Dien Bien Phu we were unexpectedly met with what has now become a theme of our trip: public holidays. We were expecting to be ... read more

I've been in Sapa in the far north west of Vietnam for nearly a week now ... it's so nice to leave my stuff unpacked in my very comfy hotel room ... it's begun to feel like home after moving every few days before this. As I've posted on Facebook, the place has been in cloud the majority of the time, but I did fortunately get some nicer weather for a two day homestay trek I did. We could actually see the surrounding mountains and rice fields! My companions on the trek were three friendly Germans - Serena, Bjorn and Jan. And 3 others who did the first day as a day walk. The seven of us had about 8 local ladies following us nearly the whole first day. As anyone has been to this part ... read more

Hi everyone, Well, its been a while since blogs so I have a lot to catch up on. I am writing this sitting in a little village on the wooden balcony of a fairly basic homestay with the sounds of roosters crowing and pigs snorting around me! Of course there is no wifi here, so I’m writing this to post later. The village is in a mountain highlands area of north west Vietnam very close to the Chinese border. It’s famous for its ethnic groups in their colourful traditional costumes and today is the weekly market so I’m looking forward to walking up there after breakfast. I saw a few ladies working the fields in heavily woven and colourful clothes on my ‘guided walk’ around the local villages yesterday. It was with a local English student ... read more

Geo: 22.4751, 103.9743:57 a zvoní budík? Ajo vlastně, chceme si zažádat o víza na Nový Zéland a oni začnou za 3min přijímat žádosti. Ještě notně rozespalí vyplňujeme žádost a opět uleháme. Dominují hlavně fialová a modrá :). No nic, fixuji ho náplastí k prsteníčku. V klidu tedy vstáváme a jdeme si... read more

Lead the way. "I've never felt more insignificant than I do now, as I stand in the middle of Sa Pa. I'm sad after leaving Ma Ma Sung's house. I have grown attached to the family and the love that they displayed toward one another. I crave that motherly love. I find myself wandering the market place searching in hope of running into either Ma Ma Sung or Ma Ma Chi for one last farewell. I would give up everything I have for a simple life with the complete family that I'd once had." Sa Pa city center. Sa pa is a city in the Hoàng Liên Son Mountains of northwestern Vietnam. Looks very similar to a ski resort...sort of. "I understand the pain and bitterness, which a lot of people have to live with. I no longer look for an escape or comfort, but to simply ride the wave. Yesterday was indeed an emotional wreck of a day. It started out well enough until we got to the market and I had to translate for Zul. I was suddenly filled with annoyance and anger caused by fear. Fear of bargaining and co... read more

Geo: 22.3945, 104.056Sa Pa is in the mountain, west of Lao Cai. It's the opposite side compared to Bac Ha and it's much greener. We managed to find an hotel with a terrace offering a great view on the Fansipan (highest summit in Vietnam). So the first evening we just grabbed some food at the market and ate while watching the sun setting behind the mountain. On our first day we just walked around and above town. We also did some shopping. There is so many shops selling cheap outdoor equipment. In the end, Elfi bought a small day pack and that's it.Home stay experience. There is many Black H'Mong women on the market trying to sell you bags or take you to their village. We decided to try a home stay. Our guide was Mu. ... read more

Geo: 22.4751, 103.974We did the 8h journey between HaNoi and Lao Cai on the night bus. Here in Vietnam they have sleeper buses which mean you can lie down. Well for tall people it's not that great as they can't fit in. The sleepers are Vietnamese size. Still it is pretty good. I would even say it's awesome except that the roads condition is so bad that you just keep bouncing around, so sleeping is not easy. For the journey we had prepared sandwiches with blue cheese inside (brought by Elfi from Germany). I am pretty sure that every one in the bus hate us for the very distinctive smell that emanated from it….but we didn't care much, it was delicious! On a fait les 8h de route qui séparent Hanoi de Lao Cai en bus-couchettes (donc ... read more
