We got up at 4:30 to get some beakfast before our boat picked us up. And then we finally saw how early we had to get up in order to go running with the locals in the morning. The fish market was in full swing, but eating fish soup while practically bathing in eels and snakes was a bit much for us before dawn. We got coffee, and found some sandwiches along the road, and met our guide, Truc. We had found him the day before by following our trusted rules: always check out our options (especially if a local says it's "complicated for us"), always pick people based on gut feeling (mostly Sadie's, Øyvind will give anyone a chance...) and avoid peole who nag and are aggressive. Our trip with Truc was amazing. He took ... read more

Welcome to the Mekong Delta! Where I finally realised how downright cheap I was! I'd read that you had to shop around to find the best deals for the boat tours that take you through a few of the smaller islands surrounding the town of My Tho where I arrived. Trying to sniff out the cheapest possible one, I went from tour desk to tour desk, and they all said that typically each group had to charter their own private boat, with prices ranging from about USD15 to USD40. I thought that was expensive even at the low end (!), and at one point even considered trying to just blend in with a larger tour group, to go for a free ride! But my morals(?) and fear about being discovered got the better of me. Instead, ... read more

After the rain last night, the temperature feels much cooler this morning. I get a convenience call from Vietnam Airlines to let me know that my early flight has been delayed an hour and a half due to technical difficulties, and enjoy a long and relaxing breakfast. At the check-in counter, I am asked if I’m fine with sitting in an exit row as they need somebody strong in case something happens: very reassuring. However, the flight is smooth and, as soon as we exit the airport with Mr. Tin (he adds that his name is pronounced like Tintin), my local Saigon guide, I feel a very different vibe than in Central Vietnam. The largest city in Vietnam is also its commercial capital and is fast becoming the nation’s window to the world. Buzzing with frenetic ... read more

As we set off in the bus the next morning 'Hairybody ready? Phat boy slim group, let's go! Cool Banana! Yes!' we reflected on how quickly the two weeks had flown by, this being our last full day together before we all headed off in different directions, some carrying on into Cambodia, me and a couple of others off home, one going on a farm stay for a few days and a couple going for some rest and relaxation on a lovely Island. For our last trip we were heading off to the Mekong Delta region, very humid, hot and jungley. We heard some fascinating snippets about the region from Phat, who had grown up in the area before moving to Ho Chi Minh City (where he said he couldn't sleep at first it was so ... read more

Saigon can only be digested in increments and so I had to get out for a few days. In Vietnam, making money is the ultimate goal in their rising economy but unfortunately this new love for capitalism has brought with it an increase in swindling and a decrease in morality, particularly considering tourists. Vendors in the street sell pirated everything and their uniformed brothers are no better: organized tour companies have found a skill in wording advertisements so I think I'm in for an adventure but really just purchased a seat on a rickety bus or overheated boat. And though I've found it difficult to temper by cynicism, overall the experience of getting cheated and taken is one I am glad to have had. I'm telling myself it's all for educational purposes... So, back to my ... read more

We left Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, on Sunday by speedboat to set as on our way down the Mekong River towards Saigon, the capital of Vietnam. The Mekong is one of the largest rivers in the world and passes through 6 countries starting in Nepal. It is a busy and thriving river with various forms of water transport such as large cargo ships transporting goods such as rice down to small man made canoes containing a solitary fisherman going about his business. We were there for leisure but most of those on the river were there for their work or trade. The speedboat took us to our first overnight stop at a city called Chau Doc, being on the Vietnam side of the border. We stayed at the Victoria Hotel overlooking the river and ... read more

The Mekong Delta is the largest river in Southeast Asia and an adventure down this is something you must do when you visit Ho Chi Minh City. It’s a massive brown river with a dense green jungle that sits along side it. For this trip down the Mekong on Wednesday 10 November, we booked a private tour so it could just be the tour guide, Paul and I. This way we could ask as many questions as we wanted to and stay as long as we wanted at certain sights. Our tour guide was named, Long, and he was quite lovely. We were picked up from our amazing hotel, the Grand Saigon, and drove two hours south to a place called, My Tho – the gateway to the Mekong Delta. Our day of exploring the Upper ... read more

Man muss bzw. darf in lokalen Restaurants essen ... read more

For our final day in Vietnam, we chose to join a day tour of the Mekong River Delta - namely, a small town called "My Tho," and two islands, Phoenix and Unicorn Islands. Our trip commenced with a two-hour bus ride south of Saigon, along the way stopping at what has to be the world's loveliest "rest stop," complete with botanical gardens and tiki huts! Jeremy got what he thought was a grape Fanta, but it turned out to be licorice! Ugh!! I could smell it on the other side of the country! But I lucked out and finally found candied ginger - not only delicious but great for the motion sickness I'm so prone to! We arrived at the river and boarded a small narrow boat to Phoenix Island, which looked like a cross between ... read more
