is there a better way to be sent off on an adventure than in a vw van with three wonderful friends, rocking out to classic journey hits in a mullet wig and shades, hellbound for sfo? i think not. after three great years in san francisco and a heartwarming, slightly tearful goodbye shinding, i set off on my journey thusly, bound for tokyo, bangkok, and points beyond. landed in tokyo and was picked up by my old friend keitaro, who somehow recognized me instantly despite the serious mulletude i was sporting. tokyo - what a freaked out, crazy, wonderful place. here i was, fully expecting to take tokyo by storm in my kickass mullet wig, and all it took was one quick look around to realize that in this wondrous land of the tweaked-out, i was ... read more
Cliff Notes Let's see highlights of the Thailand, really in no particular order. *They have awesome food, tastes just like the Thai food here. You can get it spicy or not spicy depending on what you order. - We have really good Thai here, but since I have gotten back, I have decided it was much better there. *Bad beer though, I switched to Mekong (rice rum) and coke or sprite about halfway through the trip. *Eating food from the street vendors and market vendors was a fun and safe experience. *Good weather sort of. Very hot, 90-95 and very humid every day. When we were in the North it cooled down enough for a fleece at night. *Went rock climbing, diving, sea kayaking, biking, and touring. *Going over to Cambodia and seeing Angkor Wat was ... read more
Brian thinks better of Bangkok
Published: February 14th 2005Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » BangkokSo I am back in Bangkok, after many crazy adventures with the group of 14 (the crew that I went trekking with). Before I move on to Bangkok, let me recap some of the highlights of Chaing Mai: Gong Si Fah Cai! (I hope I spelled that right) Happy Chinese New Year, everyone! We ended up in China town for the big celebration. It was quite spectacular, actually. We saw a pagent of some sort in which a bunch of little boys and a bunch of little girls got dressed up in qhat looked like traditional costumes. Not understanding a bit of the language, it was tough to tell what the critera was for judging, but it was clear who the final four, and eventually who the winners were. It seemed like the kids were less ... read more
On Monday we spent our extra unplanned day in Bangkok seeing some more of the sights: Jim Thompson's House - a collection of the last few remaining traditional teak houses in Bangkok, moved from the Ayutthaya region by an american who revived the Thai silk industry before mysteriously disappearing in the Cameron Highlands of Malaysia in 1967. Wat Tramitir - with its 3m, 5+ tonne Golden Bhudda which spent several centuries covered in plaster to disguise its true worth from invading Burmese. In fact, it was only rediscovered in 1955 after being dropped by a crane and some of the gold revealed. We then spent the afternoon in Lumphini Park (named after the birthplace of Bhudda) and saw two big (3ft+) lizards - this time alive and swimming!... read more
Hi Guys Thought I would drag myself away from the beach to give you a quick update. Spent two great nites in a place call Pattaya. Its a mix between Soho and Southend! There was 5 of us girls and 2 lads and we all went to a ladies strip club - the Thai strippers loved us so much they had us up pole dancing with them!! From there we went onto a gay cabaret show - it was the most funniest thing I've ever seen - from Tina Turner to Tarzan shaking his bits in Kates face!! And then all 7 of us got on the back of these motorbike taxis speeding down the road back to our bungalows. We are currently in Ko Samet - its an island thats 4 miles long. Its ... read more
After just a day and a night in Phang nga, which was enough time to get in a half day long tail tour around the mangroves and a quick stop at "James Bond Island" and a stilted muslim fifhing village, we moved onto Krabi and the beautiful peaceful beaches of Ton Sai and Railey. At Krabi bus station we were saved from being ripped off by a taxi driver by a friendly sweed called Simon who took us to Ton Sai beach where he had been staying for the past week. The only problem being is that it's inexessible during very low tide as the only access is via longtail boat. Unfortunatly the boat drivers didn't tell us this, instead charged us more then dropped us about 1km from the beach, knee deep in water with ... read more
