Well we got to kanchanaburi expecting the heat to waiver alittle bit now we are outside thi city but no its even hotter. Only spent two nights and a day, went on a trip and did my first elephant ride. lovely bamboo rafting then onto the erawan waterfalls. Climbed all the way to the top 7 tiers on all, took about an hour and half, rewarded with a swim in a turqoise pool with lots of fishys. Great. Wicked thunderstorm, no thunder just amazing fork lightning. ... read more

Viagra! Viagra! Not something you hear everyday when you enter a new country. After leaving Krabi I had a date with the border and a visa run in Burma, an altogether forgettable activity. Involving 6 hours and just about every method of transportation; motorbikes, buses, longtail boats and even a pedal bike I entered and left Burma in a matter of minutes. That wasn't before being offered every kind of pharmacy stimulant on the market, I'm told that 50 cents a pill is quite a good deal though. During my visa run I met an expat from New Jersey with a passport at capacity with Thailand/Burma entry stamps, life would suck if you had that trip to look forward to every month. Seems a friend was coming to visit him for a couple of weeks and ... read more

Hello to you all. Well my last week in Thailand went by quite quickly. I spent it in the Western part of the Country near the Myamar border along the River Kwae. I stayed in a guest house that was suspended over the river, which allowed for beautiful views and a cultural experience. For a couple days I would sit on traditional Thai pyramid cushions, drinking fresh fruit smoothies and lassies, while loud longtail boats would race bye with loads of tourists. All the activities are partook in were relaxing and seemed to have a beautiful view of the mountains, rivers, waterfalls or any other part of Natures wonders. I rented a motorcycle and went for a 250km ride one day taking in Hell Fire Pass, Soi Yok Noi Waterfalls and a couple of caves, while ... read more

My travels in South East Asia have finally commenced. After touching down in Bangkok on Sunday night, and a couple of days on Khao San Road, I've spent the last few days in Kanchanaburi, a small, busy town spanning 5km along the northern bank of the River Kwai, about 150km west of Bangkok. The town is famous as the site of the base camp for Allied POW's in WWII working on the "Death Railway" linking Thailand to Burma, the main attraction being the bridge on the river Kwai, 5km north of town. The town is now a major tourist centre, gateway to the national parks between here and the Burmese border, and a great spot to relax and sample the local brews for a few days! The bridge has now been shamelessly exploited by shops, restaurants, ... read more

Yesterday we arrived at our second destination, Kanchanaburi, the location of the famous "bridge over the River Kwai" movie. The bridge, which is not too much to look at in and of itself is the main attraction in the city itself although there are other nice things around the city. We got to Kanchanaburi by a minibus from Bangkok. The guidebooks warn against some of these companies and what they warn about also happened to us, but we were lucky and it worked out sort of well. The thing is that when the tickets are sold the agents promise that the minibus will bring you to the bus station. I even asked extra, because I read in teh book that they sometimes do funny things. And the lady said, yes, to the bus station. But when ... read more

Last day of tour More WWII history Lots of lives were lost. We started off our morning with another walk through the forest. BUT since I had done this walk the previous day they decided to take us on a slightly different route that took us over part of the lake via a rope bridge! I wasn't feeling the most nimble so I opted to take the easier route that was over a few precariously placed logs instead! With my luck I would have fallen the 10 metres into the murky lake... After complaining about the heat a few times and then replenishing ourselves with water we headed over to the canoes which we took to cross the lake this time. I had it pretty easy since there were only 3 paddles and about 8 of ... read more

Sweltering hot day Rumour: Forty one degrees My arms are sweating! Since we did not follow the original itinerary as planned we had quite a few activities that lay before us on our 2nd day of our tour. First it was a "walk" through the "forest" that was located behind the C&C Jungle huts. To me it seemed at first like we were taking the two dogs out for a walk. I guess it didn't help that the person leading us on our walk did not speak English. Details. haha The area was quite dry...I'm not sure the last time this area has seen rain. Just a short 30 minute walk and we were all dripping with sweat. Yucks! Thank goodness they provided us with free drinking water the entire stay. I think on this day ... read more

Kanchanaburi Saw Bridge Over River Kwai Lots of History. Okay, I must admit before leaving for Kanchanaburi I did not really know the importance of all of the things I would be seeing. Let me tell you that I learned a lot of WWII history! This was the first day of my tour. It was a bit disorganized BUT I reminded myself that "you get what you pay for" and I just started to take things as they came to me. Can't really complain when I only spent 500TB per day for my tour (that translates to about $16CDN - all meals and accommodations included!) Most of the morning was spent getting thru Bangkok rush hour and then driving to Kanchanaburi. Then we stopped off at a War Cemetary and the JEATH Museum. It was all ... read more
