Background: A unified Thai kingdom was established in the mid-14th century. Known as Siam until 1939, Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country never to have been taken over by a European power. A bloodless revolution in 1932 led to a constitutional monarchy. In alliance with Japan during World War II, Thailand became a US ally following the conflict. Thailand is currently facing armed violence in its three Muslim-majority southernmost provinces.

Paradise off the coast of Ko Tao
The next leg of our journey took us back to Bangkok, allowing us to delve deeper in this exotic city and then further south to the islands of Southern Thailand. It was a good feeling being back in Bangkok, generally knowing the area, knowing the scams and touts and knowing which street food is the best and which is best avoided. We arrived back with an air of familiarity that we aren't really used to anymore. Knowing the city better now also allowed us to utilise the cheaper public transportation the city has to offer. The barge formed the backbone of [View Full Entry]

After a gruelling journey which involved 18 hours on a bus and 6 hours on 2 ferrys, we finally arrived on Koh Tao. To say it was worth it is an understatement. The place is idyllic, with a lovely beach, chilled bars and cool people. However, there is a price to pay for all this loveliness and that would be our accommodation! A double bed with cold shower, and free mozzies to boot was our little abode for the few days we were there . . but what can you expect for a fiver a night? We went on a boat [View Full Entry]

Dear all, Just a quick message as I know that I havent written in a while! Life here is good although a few days ago I had some quite nasty bacteria that decided to live in my stomach!! Thankfully after a course of anti biotics it has gone, and I feel normal again! I am not a very good advert for travelling - I have been away for ten weeks and so far I have had two ear infections and a stomach bug!! It really is worth it though!! Tonight we went out with a group of friends and had...a roast [View Full Entry]

How did we get here??......Were we washed up from a boat wreck onto these beautiful sands??......Where did the last few days go??.......... Dizzy and dazed we made it from Northern Laos, across the border and all the way down to the Thai Island of Koh Tao in 46 hours of travel. It all began with a bus from Luang Nam Tha to the border town of Huay Xai, crossed the Mekong by boat into Thailand, walked 3km to the bus station in Chiang Khong, sat on the bus to Bangkok for 14 hours, then raced across Bangkok (Via the BA office [View Full Entry]

I'm now officially a certified PADI open water diver! Scuba diving was a bit nerve racking at first and there was 2 boring afternoons in the classroom but getting out into the real ocean and swimming with the fishies was fantastic. I can't wait to do it again. We didin't see anything out of the ordinary but there were beautiful blue, yellow fish and big schools of them, jellyfish and class coral. It felt good to be doing something constructive and learning something again after so long. We had a really good group - Team Ireland!! and a big dinner and [View Full Entry]

Koh Tao part 3

Asia » Thailand » South » Ko Tao
Matt got chatting to 3 guys, Joel, Stevie and Chris who, it turns out, are from Stockport! (One was born in Reddish and lived about 5 mins from where we live). Whilst Lisa was recovering from a bout of food poisioning : ( Matt went out to watch the match with them and had a lads night out. They were really nice guys so the following day we spent chilling out round the pool with them and then went out the following night. We worked our way down the beach from bar to bar. At the last bar we stopped at, [View Full Entry]

on the day of the deep dive
I don't know how long I ended up staying in Ko Tao but I loved every minute of it. The first day I arrived I was lucky enough to get a bungalow at the same place where my friends were staying but try as I might I could not find them anywhere. I searched the beach, every shop and restaurant but they were nowhere to be found. It was dark by the time I gave up on looking for them and the crazy thing is that as soon as I did I bumped into David or I should say he bumped [View Full Entry]
