Background: A unified Thai kingdom was established in the mid-14th century. Known as Siam until 1939, Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country never to have been taken over by a European power. A bloodless revolution in 1932 led to a constitutional monarchy. In alliance with Japan during World War II, Thailand became a US ally following the conflict. Thailand is currently facing armed violence in its three Muslim-majority southernmost provinces.

Koh Samui - part 2

Off for the day trekking and kayaking!
Bodies aching, eyes hanging out, tan no more . . . yes, the price of caning it in this 24 hour party people island but what a great few nights we have had! Have met some very nice people along the way and managed a few hours on the beach when we could drag our weary bodies from our beds. However, both of us agree that its now time to move on before we become total physical wrecks and I end up thinking getting a tattoo is a good idea after a few too many changs! Koh Phangan here we come [View Full Entry]

Chaweng Beach! We have arrived! Expecting it to be fairly quiet being low season, we were surprised to find that the place is kicking! Although its fair to say that probably 60% of the population is Israeli (sorry Shents . . ). The place has not changed, in fact, there seems to be more clubs and things being built all the time. First day on the beach we headed to the Ark Bar - couldn't resist the pull of all that techno (hmm) pumping out whilst being surrounded by the body beautifuls! It is baking here tho and we could only [View Full Entry]

Ko Samui

28/09/08 Sunday Day 45 Back to the same shite I’m really sorry now that we didn’t stay in Ko Phi Phi longer. Got our taxi anyway from our hotel to the airport which was about 30 minutes away. Checked in, got on our plane and headed for Ko Samui. The airport here is tiny. We were collected from the plane in what can be described as vehicles you’d see ferrying people around zoos and the like, sort of a train like vehicle. Very cool. This island is pretty expensive. Our taxi from the airport was about 8 euros for about a [View Full Entry]

Fire!
Fire!
Fire-juggler on the beach
I have my Birthday celebrations back in Bangkok and get riotously drunk on Chang Beer - you're only 34 once you know... I travel South and spend two glorious days on a raft-house in Khao Sok NP - just chilling out, sun-bathing and swimming in the reservoir. The place was so beautiful I forgot to take any photographs! From Khao Sok I go to Ko Pha-Ngan, just North of Ko Samui. We stay in beach huts on one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. On the first night I go to the Half-Moon party, in a jungle clearing [View Full Entry]

Alternate Title: "...Everything but Yul Brynner" Lumbering. This describes two actions of the asian elephants that we had the opportunity to visit with in the surprisingly diverse country of Thailand. Asian elephants, up until the last half century were used for lumbering as beasts of burden in the logging industry of northern Thailand. Lumbering also describes the deceptively slow swagger with which these fascinating creatures move. We had the pleasure of experiencing the latter up close as we participated in the one-day mahout (elephant trainer) course at the Thai Elephant Co [View Full Entry]

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008 FINALLY - This vacation is beginning to feel like a VACATION! After an exhaustive 2 weeks of hiking through Thailand and Cambodia, we have finally arrived on the island of Ko Samui in the south of Thailand. Marking the final leg of our trip, these final days are dedicated to sitting on the beach, working on our tans, watching the waves roll in, and most important, RELAXING! We arrived, via ferry, from Surat Thani, in the mid-afternoon. It occurred to us on the ferry that we could no longer put off our decision and needed to decide [View Full Entry]

Still Koh Samui

9.30pm Where I last left off, we were on our way to have a beer or two. That turned out to be a beer or two dozen. We started the evening of on the beach, laying on these chairs you can fold flat and sleep on. Was a amazing night, the moon was out and it had cooled down a degree or two. We got chatting to our waitress, Thai was her name. She was so cool, nice to talk to as she enjoys joking around. Her boyfriend is a Swiss guy who lives in Zurich, Switzerland. So Thai sat with [View Full Entry]

Asia » Thailand » South » Ko Samui
Hope you enjoyed my previous essay, had a bit of blog catching up to do!! now i am on top of it :-) Today we woke up and as usual headed to breakfast at our hotel all bleery eyed and susing out the dishes on offer. We often discuss our plans for the day over breakfast, with the weather in mind we decided to enquire about hiring a jeep today. We enquired at the office right near our hotel, where we are using the internet, 1baht a minute! quite slow and cant upload photos but cheap as so worthwhile for booking [View Full Entry]

Koh Samui

Asia » Thailand » South » Ko Samui
8.00AM Well, we have been on Koh Samui for 4 days now. The first 2 were just lazing around on the beach at Bo Phut Beach. I, chris, still can't go in the water as my feet are cut to shredds and there is no sign of it getting any better. Today I have covered them up to keep the dirt out! Linda is the first person on the beach tanning, the resturant has not even opened for breakfast. We met up with a old mate, Shaun Hannoi Hannocks. He has been living here for a couple of months with his [View Full Entry]
