Koh Phangan is paradise
Published: April 18th 2013Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Pha-NganI am a lucky man! A few years ago I was in Bangkok wondering where to go next. I had no plan whatsoever when I met a Frenchman who told me about Phangan and its clear water. I thought it sounded nice. When I arrived everyone asked me if I had come for the Full Moon party. I had no idea what they meant. I had come for the beach! And OMG, the beaches in the north of the island are f-in' stunning! Shallow crystal clear water, soft white sand, coconut trees everywhere, delicious food, and pretty cool mountains for a hike or a run: my kind of holiday! I have come back to Koh Phangan every year since 2010 and this time I took my parents and Becky along. We had a blast! We rented ... read more
I had my first bath in 3 and a half months!
Published: April 17th 2013Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » KrabiOur month in Vietnam is over! It was a very full on month; we took a lot of buses, saw a lot of places and made a lovely Danish friend Leah, whom we travelled with for about 3 weeks (a very long time in the travelling world!). We ended up staying in Hoi An for about 3 days. We had a hotel with a pool for the first time! We rented bicycles, got lost in the old town and rode out to the beach. We also ate a lot of good food there, the best we had in all of Vietnam! We also had clothes tailor made, an interesting experience although they struggled to get the dress I designed quite right. It took three trips back to the tailors and ultimately a motorbike ride out to ... read more
After some time in Bangkok we took a night bus (long ride and lots of waiting at the pier from 2am to 6am...) towards the south of Thailand to eventually reach Kho Tao, a wonderful island near Koh Samui. Apparently Kho Tao is heaven for divers. We didn't dive but we sure enjoyed the scenery, the sunsets, the clear water, the food and the quiet beaches in the early morning. Kho Tao is extremely picturesque because of the big stones that can be found everywhere on the beach or inland in the forest. Kho Tao is quite touristy so it's not easy to find the perfect bungalow on the perfect beach and accommodation and food are slightly more expensive than on Kho Phangan but it's definitely worth a stop for a few days or a week. ... read more
This is a heavy one, I had a lot of alone time to think this weekend... Let me start with updates. In the past two weeks I have been busy with summer school and cleaning out every old file and picture on my computer (so I can sell it). I have managed to pick up some tutoring hours to make a little extra cash on the side. In case you missed the Facebook pictures, I also had a little plastic surgery done. Don't get too excited, I just needed two tiny abscesses removed from my scar. My scar looks beautiful now; well, as pretty as a face scar can ever look, at least! Here's where I get introspective. What was supposed to be a blog describing my travels, has now become almost like a diary. This ... read more
Koh Lanta - heaven on earth.
Published: April 9th 2013Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko LantaAfter yet another horrific journey which should have taken 4 hours but instead took 10 (including a 2 hour wait in someones front garden - only in Thailand!) we were dropped off at our accommodation in Koh Lanta. The owner of the huts we had booked to stay in was very friendly but the huts were like being back in the jungle, it was made of bamboo with holes so there was plenty of wildlife in there and we had a big mosquito net all around our bed, and one little fan which did little to cool the room. But we thought we would suck it up and enjoy being at one with nature.. Our first impressions of Koh Lanta weren’t great, we had heard so many good things about the place, the beautiful beaches, the ... read more

We travelled over from Koh Samui to Phuket, leaving at 6.30am and they told us we would be there by 3pm, but this being Thailand, of course we didn’t arrive until 12 hours later, at around 7pm. We spent three nights in total in Phuket and it was kind of like a mini holiday, we spent loads of money, stayed in luxury accommodation (3* hotel with air con and a pool - this is considered as luxury these days), went the cinema, had nice meals out and took a break from the travelling lifestyle. As for Phuket, it seems to be one of the main places everyone goes on holiday in Thailand but for me, it wasn’t the best and I would not return. We stayed in the resort of Karon, about 10 minutes outside of ... read more
Lets get festive....!!! 21/12 We got up and had our free breakfast (in Koh Pagnan!) and checked out. We booked our taxi plus ferry ticket to Koh Samui, and transfer in samui from our hotel. It cost us 550 baht for all three which was a good deal, as the ferry ticket alone would have been 450 baht. Our taxi driver to the ferry port was none other than Charlie the barman! We jumped in the back of his pick up with our cases and headed to the ferry port. We got our sticker for the ferry, with our hotel name written on and boarded the ferry. It only took half an hour to get to Samui, but was a bit of a rocky ride at the front of the Lomproyah catamaran. We got on our ... read more
Island hopping - Koh Tao & Koh Samui
Published: April 6th 2013Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko TaoWe finally managed to get a boat off Koh Phangan but didn’t get to Koh Tao until about 7.30pm and due to everyone heading to Koh Tao for a chill out after full moon the island was very busy and the hotel we had planned to check into was fully booked. After about an hour of walking around with our backpacks we finally checked into a way more expensive hotel. We had a quiet first night and saw little of Koh Tao, just went out for dinner and a few drinks. The next morning we were up bright and early in search of another hotel but everywhere was still fully booked so we just booked at our hotel for another 2 nights. We then headed to the beach, and were very impressed. It was absolutely beautiful ... read more
Rain, Rain & Killer Monkeys
Published: April 1st 2013Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Khao Sok NPAn early morning flight got us into Surat Thani where we had arranged a private transfer to Khao Sok National Park. Because we had a week in Thailand only I didn't want to waste precious time on the local buses, knowing from experience how long those journey's can take... I had arranged a 3 day tour of Khao Sok National Park with Kris at Limestone Lake Tours - my 3rd trip with her. Like I said in the previous blog, this is the one place that I had dreamt of taking the love of my life... and so it was bittersweet to be going with Ben considering that we were no longer together.... It was kind of fitting then to walk out of the airport and see the ominous black clouds.. A sign of things to ... read more
Aboard a Katamaran we skim across the shimmering blue gulf towards the diving hotspot of Koh Tao. This is the start of our travel time and our first stops include the Islands of Koh Tao, Koh Pha Nang and Koh Samui for sun, sea and partying. Arriving we hustle our way through the cat-calling taxi drivers for the Song Taew that would take us to Bans diving Resort. Its diving school is the one of the biggest diving schools in Thailand and awards more PADI certificates than any other, (but naturally the cheap price and free rooms were the attraction). Our diving instructor was a small, tubby and larger than life man named Anthony who had gone from professional ballerina to diver. This walking Cliché ranted on huge tangents about ‘saving the world’ and the UK’s ... read more
