This trip started off with a few scary moments. I woke and noticed a brightness outside despite it only being 4am in mid winter. Looking out the bedroom window the thing we'd been dreading had happened. Everywhere was covered in a blanket if snow. Our taxi was due to pick us up at 5.15am to take us to the airport. By 5.20 when it hadn't arrived I began to feel nervous so phoned the taxi company who assured me a cab was on it's way. 10 minutes later it pulled up outside, the driver jumped out and proceeded to scrape ice from his windows. He confessed to us that he'd just been woken up and asked to take us and to be quick about it, apparently non of the drivers on the nightshift were prepared to ... read more

aAfter a long cold dreary winter we have, at last, finalised plans to escape to the sunshine. We spent December 2016 and January 2017 in Thailand catching up with Sharon, Scott and the children who were on a twelve month trip around the world. Quite an adventure with a two year old and a four year old and we loved being part of it. So when they announced they were setting off for a second trip it was too good an opportunity to miss to catch up with the grandchildren again. Also after the trauma they'd been through watching forest fires then mud slides come a hair's breadth from destroying their home back in California, I felt the need to do the ' mothering' thing. Not to mention a couple of health scares, too, while all ... read more

Thursday 8 February, 2018. Weather hot and sunny. Slept ok. Our plan today was to visit Krabi by local bus. We left the room about 1045 and dropped off some laundry next door. The bus stop was opposite (or so we thought) and we waited for a little while, a bus came along but the driver told us we had to wait on the other side. So over the road we went and only waited a couple of minutes before our bus came. It turns out the bus goes up to the coast and around, which we didn't know. The bus by the way is basically padded seats in the back of a truck and a roof. The journey seemed to take a while and go all over the place, but eventually we were dropped off ... read more

Um ... read more

Friday 2 February 2018 We had awoken earlyish after our recovery nights sleep. A slow start to the day was in order. Pat sorted out our stuff, the UK heavy clothing certainly not required for the time being. We eventually left the room for an explore about 1100. First stop, Starbucks for coffee. Weather sunny and hot. We ambled along, looking at shops and people watching. Up to the coast, stopped for more drinks. Purchased an Aonang hat. Lunch was at an Indian / Thai restaurant looking out to sea. Pat had the Pad Thai and asked for not spicy, I ordered Thai Green curry. Pat's came spicier than she likes, but not strong enough to not eat it. Mine broke through my sore throat and was excellent. Our pace was definitely slow today, but it ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Phuket February 3rd 2018

It's our second to last full day in Phuket. On Wednesday we got up at 5.40am to go on a full day boat trip around Phang Na Bay (and a few other places). We got onto this pretty big speed boat which could fit all 18 of us comfortably on board. We first stopped at Koh Phanak where we explored some of the caves and had to wear torches to see where we were going. We came out the other side of the cave into this large opening where mangrove trees were growing and they had those walking fish (mud skippers). After that we went to Koh Hong where we were taken on these inflatable canoes and taken into more caves (where we had to lie down to get through some of the openings). From there ... read more

Tuesday 31 January, 2018 We left Cyprus a week ago for the UK and have been helping Pat's Mother - Betty - celebrate her 90th Birthday. Yesterday we drove up to Heathrow and stopped overnight at the Terminal 4 Premier Inn. This morning we were up early and off to Terminal 4 for a Qatar flight to Doha at 0910, then onwards to Bangkok. The Premier Inn is walking distance to the Terminal and very convenient. We had checked in online, so we just had to drop our bags off. All went smoothly. Through security, then a cup of coffee and to our gate. The sniffer dog took great interest in my bag as we boarded, and had his snout well in my bag, but the handler asked if I had currency in there, which I ... read more
