I learned a lesson a long time ago that I didn’t head last night. Don’t drink cheap gin. With a massive hangover, I missed breakfast, which heather said was terrific and on par with the Banyan Tree breakfast. I don’t know about that, we’ll see. She did manage to capture a video of me snoring deeply that won’t be posted here.
After being dragged from bed, we headed poolside to take in the southern Thai sun for the day. The pool is super nice - warm water, plenty of lounge chairs and sits atop the Patong Beach inlet. It also has wireless internet access, which allows for my postings here on this blog. But let me tell you what a major inconvenience it is to have to write these things poolside in high 80 degree weather, covered in suntan lotion with the sun glaring off the screen that makes it very difficult to see what you’re writing. What a bummer.
Anyways, how’s the weather in New Jersey/York? I heard snow and cold.
We eventually made our way beachside, as our hotel offers a small private beach to hangout on and do whatever. It was nice and the water
was unbelievably warm, but you need to tread carefully as the bottom is covered with rock and coral. Manageable, but you don’t want to destroy your feet whilst on vacation.
The Amari Coral Beach Resort also offers a long jetty toward the end of Patong Beach, which is great for watching the sunset. The walk to the jetty is a long nature trail through some dense and beautiful foliage that helps set the tone of a tropical paradise. Walking out over the jetty, there’s a spot to swim and snorkel off the end, which we took full advantage of. The water, deeper then at the beach, offered a neat contrast of temperature as the top was warm like a blanket and just a foot deeper was chilled. There were tropical fish with an array of colors swimming in between us while we splashed around.
As the sun began to descend, we climbed out of the water, dried off, ordered some drinks and antipasto to enjoy the gorgeous red sky as the sun dipped behind a mountain and into the sea. (The antipasto included fish, of course. We sent it back to once it came and watched the school
of small stripped tropical fish frenzy over it. This made us smile and laugh immensely. It’s the little things.)
Since we needed to be up early the next morning for a boat ride, it was decided that we’d skip the nightlife and have dinner at the hotel’s Thai restaurant and have some casual cocktails in the lobby as a local Thai band sang songs pulled straight from NY’s 106.7, Lite FM station (http://www.1067litefm.com). This had us in bed just before midnight.
