While I think Bangkok and Chiang Mai left us a little Wat-ted out (over Wat-tage), Phuket offers the serene beauty of a tropical paradise along the Andaman Sea. While there are plenty of attractions to see, there are no major temples or historical sites that are must sees, safe for the natural beauty that rises out of the Southern Coast in the Andaman and the neighboring Gulf of Thailand.
We had dinner at our hotel the first evening here in Phuket in a beachside Italian restaurant. It was great to have something other than Thai food and the meal we had was delicious, classic Italian fare. I gotta admit, the Thai’s know how to cook Italian food.
After dinner we wanted to get some nightlife in and went to Bang La Road, also in Patong Beach. We jumped in a tuk-tuk and after a 10 or 12 minute ride along the beach we arrived to a jumping road full of people, bars and excitement. Much like the sights we saw on Khao San Road in Bangkok (http://www.travelblog.org/Asia/Thailand/Bangkok/Banglamphu/blog-359290.html), we strolled slowly along taking in the people watching with keen interest. At the end of the street and across a busy
intersection was the Rock City bar, which Heather had read about and offers life music playing American classic and modern rock. At the entrance, we paid a fee for a two-hour open bar to cover the expense of the 6 bands playing the evening… this of course lead to an imperative to drink at least the equal amount of what we paid in cover.
The bands were great and played a lot of songs we knew and loved - all covers of popular rock music, much like being down the Jersey Shore during the summertime. The bar was packed, and packed mostly with young Australians, which made Heather and I feel ancient. Apparently the Aussies had the same goal as us and proceeded to drink the cover and then some, while it all slowly degraded into a frat party. We quickly learned that Aussies maybe equal to if not worse than the guidos of Seaside and Belmar. Though we still had fun tying one over and enjoyed poking fun at the sloppy messes that abounded. Australia, don’t let anyone tell you that you’re classy. (You call that a knife? That’s a knife. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01NHcTM5IA4)
We cleared out and headed
That GirlThis girl lost her camera and eventually made her way to the stage to yell at the crowd and sing a tune with the band
back to our hotel at about 2AM, ready to do nothing the next day and hang out poolside all day.
