We arrived in Ko Samui late afternoon and of all places, headed to Tesco because our leader said that things were a bit pricy here and it would be good to stock up on food. We all hit the beach as soon as we got to the hotel and it was so nice to soak up the sun and swim in the sea after the previous weeks trecking. That night a few people wanted to go to see one of the ladyboy shows on the island (I was an exception). So we went to the main strip and had dinner before getting a couple of drinks in one of the bars. The Irish girl on our trip (Brid) soon pointed out that the 'All Ireland Hurling Final' was on in the bar next door so we ventured across to watch what we could of it. The atmosphere was great and the bar was really packed. Apparently the owner claimed to be the only person in Asia showing the match!
The next morning we were up early to take advantage of the free breakfast buffet and to hit the beach. It was a lovely day and I went out with Vicky
Irish Bar in Ko Samui
Where we watched the hurling. and Brid on a kayak for an hour which was really good fun if tiring when the waves got a bit rough. When we got back we all played volleyball but by this point the sea had unfortunately begun to turn a green/brown colour and we were all keen to get out. After a thorough wash we sat round outside our bungalows and had a few samsungs and played cards. We also ordered pizza but it didn't go too smoothly as the girl on the other end of the phone wasn't to hot on her English. The next morning we headed for Ko Tao, one of the neighbouring islands. The journey took around 3 hours but was well worth it.
As soon as we arrived we changed and headed for the beach and stayed there until the sun started to dissappear. After dinner that evening we headed out to the bars to find friends from the first half of the trip who had left after the Chiang Mai part of the trip. It was good to see them again and a few of us ended up going on to a bar called Lotus where you can sit on the
beach on cushions and watch the fire dancers (and also buy your drinks cheaper from the 7 Eleven next door!) Again another day relaxing on the beach the day after whilst most of the rest of the group hired mopeds to go around the island. Thankfully we opted out as Lydia had a fall and had to pay for damages on the bike. We found this out mid-afternoon and they all headed out again only to come back with Rickman (named because he looks and sounds like the actor Alan Rickman) having fallen off with Anne on the back and him needing four stitches!
We again went to Lotus that night (well...those not on antibiotics by now) and I had another run in with a fire dancer, this time I hadn't noticed he was blindfolded when I strolled past him! No harm done though. We eventually headed back at around 2.30 only to meet the two Irish girls from the boat we took into Laos on the way. Very small world! The final day also went along the same lines, beach followed by Lotus but as you can see from some of the pictures, it ended up a little
damp and Vicky turned out to be a good shield for Emma in trying to evade the water.
The following morning was our last one and we had lunch with the two girls who we met up with after the first leg (Candy and Emma) and had lunch before heading for the 3 hour boat back to the mainland and the night train back to Bangkok. I'd say we're both thoroughly exhausted now after a few days on the beach and the night train was like trying to sleep on a roller coaster! We at least have tonight to rest up before Hong Kong (after the England rugby match of course)...

Glad to hear you enjoyed the hurling championships, your dad is so proud you've not forgotten your heritage now you're a citizen of the globe. They have hurling championships in Frodsham - usually after half a dozen pints on a Saturday night!! Leave it to your imagination!! See you soon - counting the days now. Love mumxxx
