Sorry for the delay in updates but Christmas and New Year seemed to get in the way!! Will try and remember the last couple of weeks anyway and add a few entries, so here goes!!
After Ko Pha Ngan we headed to the biggest of the three Islands in that stretch, Ko Samui. On arrival we got a taxi to what turned out to be the busiest part of the Island, Chaweng and spent ages trying to find a guest house within our budget! Found one eventually and just dumped our stuff, got a quick shower and went for food and the Newcastle match (Portsmouth away in case you were wondering - and Ncl won 3-0!!) Jess had a local rice dish which she wasn't too impressed with and I had an amazing duck curry :D
The next day we headed to the beach nearest our hostel - the longest on the Island at 6km! Was ok but lined with private resorts and bars so was a far cry from the near-deserted tropical island paradise we had got used to on Ko Pha Ngan and Ko Tao! We spent a while there until it started to cloud over then went for a coffee and made some plans for the next few days.
Went out for tea that night but I started feeling sick and couldn't even finish my meal (shepherd's pie - pretty average!) It turned out that I had mild food poisoning, probably from some dodgy sandwich meat we had bought for breakfast that day! Still felt awful the next day so Jess went shopping and came back with some anti-biotics and other goodies to perk me up!! I started feeling better so went for a pizza then back to bed!
The following day we went to the next beach along which was in a quieter and generally nicer area all round - spent some time on the beach but it started raining!!! After a quick drink to let the clouds pass we walked back to our hostel along the sea front to choose a restaurant for our last night in Thailand (we had heard good things about the seafood on Ko Samui and far be it for us to pass up an opportunity to eat good seafood - although the pharmacist had advised me to stay away from seafood for a few days!) We had a lovely meal right on the beach anyway, Jess had a seafood kebab (including the biggest prawn she had ever seen) and I had a beef kebab - both barbequed on the beach in front of you and both really good!
Overall, Ko Samui was probably the best place to be sick - we didn't feel we missed out on much and wouldn't bother with the place again if we came back. Although the biggest island in the Lower Southern Gulf, it had the least to offer.
Anyway, see next entry for Malaysia (and 14 hour bus journey).......
Ciao for now
Paul and Jess
