It rained again in the night and today it's over cast and very windy. We drove to the little town and found a cafe to have breakfast (banana pankcakes seems to be the favorite). We looked in the few shops then went back to sit by the pool. The sea is very rough so I'm trying not to think about the boys going scubber diving tomorrow. We walked round the bay and had lunch in one of the beach bars and the kids went in the sea. The wind got up even more as the day came to an end and one the the sun shades blew into the pool. No one was hurt thankfully We had dinner by the beach even though it was windy and had an early night.... read more

After a good nights sleep in our lovely chalets the kids and I had banana pancakes for breakfast then we climbed in our car or should I say truck and went to explore the island. Kho Pha-Nang has far more jungle, is quieter, prettier, in fact it's paradise. It rained in the night (lucky again) and today it's a bit cloudy. We drove up the west coast to Koh Ma on the north west corner of the island. It's a tiny island joined to the mainland by a spit of sand. There was quite a lot of drift wood on the beach, washed up by the storm last night, which the locals had made into a long row of fires. I'll bet they look great tonight when they light them. We walked round the bay and ... read more

We went for a swim and then found out that the ferry we had planned to catch to Kho Pha-nang was full so we had a bit of a rush to catch an earlier one from further down the coast - the 12.30 high speed Lamprayar catamaran. The sea was calm so it only took about twenty minutes to get there which was good for me not having very good sea legs. When we docked at Thongsala we waited for our luggage to be unloaded. My pink case was high on top of a huge pile of precariously balanced cases and I think I was lucky it didn't fall into the sea on the way over. We squeezed into an already full songthaew thats roof was also was piled high with luggage. One young man couldn't ... read more

I said that I'd do nothing and that was exactly what I did. The intestinal infection I picked up in Myanmar ensured I wasn't able to do much anyway. I was only meant to stay in Kuala Lumpur for a month but ended up staying about five weeks thanks to the stubbornness and persistence of whatever I picked up. The resulting dietary restrictions in a food paradise such as Malaysia however is just torture, especially when staying with relatives who never let you go hungry and are enthusiastic about bringing you everything that's worth eating in this country. And for this outstanding hospitality, I really do have to give massive thanks to my Aunty Josephine and my Uncle Wooi Ping for looking after me. A break from travelling, blogging and fending for myself after eighteen months ... read more

It was a reasonably quick ferry from koh Tao to Koh Phangan and after being bundled into a taxi with 10 other travellers, we arrived at our new home for the week 'Sun Sea Resort'. Had one of those awkward moments in the taxi where it pulled up almost in the middle of nowhere and everyone looks about hoping this isn't the place they are getting off.. they had no need to worry, it was our stop! We were greeted by a friendly man with red teeth from chewing too much tobacco. He showed us to our room which was small and basic but just the job, or so we thought until the fuse box began smoking, blew up and when we tested the bathroom it was basically not plumbed in and the sink was just ... read more

Koh Pha Ngan is known the world around for the infamous Full Moon Party held monthly on Haad Rin on the south eastern beach of the island. I had no desire to go to this party nor was it the correct time of the month anyways as the moon was in a new quarter. Good timing on my part. The ferry from Koh Samui to Koh Pha Ngan cost me $200b after shopping around a bit. On the boat I was given a map of the island and decided to stay on the north west coast on Haad Yao. After taking a share taxi to the beach I stumbled into a dive shop that also had accommodation for $400b. I booked the room and also a two dive trip to Sail Rock the following day for ... read more

Koh Phangnan is famous for hosting the Full Moon party, which takes place three days after we leave unfortunately. Despite the place being known for being a party island, we managed to find what has easily become the highlight of my time here so far! Thong Nai Pan Yai beach is to the east of the island if my geographical skills are correct (which they might not be so just google it) and it is amazing. A small beach in comparison to some we've seen, it has creamy soft sand and crystal clear water surrounded by green trees and mountains. If I go back a few steps our journey to the hotel from the ferry was a pain. In what we've found to be typical Thai fashion, we waited in our cab until the driver had ... read more

Just as I remembered it Koh Phanghan was nothing far off from your standard lads on tour holiday to the likes of Kavos, Malia and the rest. Top knot, steroid pumped tossers roaming the streets as if they own the place, still drunk from the night before bombing around on mopeds. Albeit our hostel itself was pretty quaint. "@ Beach Bed and Bar" in Baad Tai, about a 7min taxi from the pier, 10 from the main Haad Rin drag. Filled with mainly chilled backpackers and situated right on the beach front, only shared with a few other hostels and resorts along the beach. Very chilled vibe and happily spent days and evenings chilling on the beach. Plenty of luscious food places close by on the Main Street. Those quiet Thai places are the gems to ... read more

Originally when I went to Thailand I had no plans to go to the full moon party, although the mushroom shakes intrigued me the stories I had heard about people beintend robbed or sexually assaulted had scared me to death! As we met girls along the way and everyone who was "cool" was going and we had already started a crew, we were sure to change our minds! Keisha and Ali went ahead of us and told us where to book Shirilea backpackers it was such a long way away from civilisation but the place was amazing! As the rooms were quite expensive to save money we decided all 6 of us would share a 2 double bedded room! Let's just say it was cosy! The place had a pool and were in the middle of ... read more
