Ko Phangan is a beautiful island in South-east Thailand that hasn't been invaded by the likes of McDonalds and subway yet. It is however, due to many travellers visiting the island for the Full Moon Party held once a month, starting to get a little expensive. We stayed in the Coco Gardens Bungalows which we had booked for five nights before leaving for our trip back in September. We booked a beach front bungalow with A/C which was lovely the only problem was that Matt and Mark had to take it in turns to sleep on the floor as there was only a double bed in the room.
We arrived and checked into the bungalow early and found our barings on where we were staying for the following week. Matt and Mark enjoyed watching the derby game with a few beers while relaxing in the bar at the Coco Gardens, while Kerry tried hard not to!
We hired scooters for the day (Kerry on the back of Matt's) and drove into Haad Rin and up the coast. Matt and Mark even went insearch of Matt's first international Geocache, eventually! (Haha Scott)
The week really consisted of swimming in
the sea, trying to find the hottest curry for Mark to eat, drinking and then being lazy around the bungalow in the hammok.
The locals charged a flat rate of 100 Baht in a taxi to get to Haad Rin and then it cost 100 Baht to get in. Mark bought a bucket, which held 300ml of local Rum, a can of coke and a small bottle of redbull for 150 baht (£3!) Kerry got a similar one but with vodka and Matt decided to stick to beer. We arrived on the beach to an unbelievable sight. Thousands of people with eluminous coloured clothes on and coved in glow in the dark paints were dancing away to the music that every bar was blasting through their doors onto the beach. There were slides, stages, flame throwers, flaming jump rope, you name it, it was there. We enjoyed the night walking around, drinking only a little, Matt and Mark jumped through a ring that was on fire and then it started raining! But the rain only made everyone want to dance more, it was like the heavens opened and the party just got started. Matt went for a swim in
the sea after watching pretty much everyone on the beach go for a pee in there and then we called it a night, at around 5am. Mark watched the sun come up back at the bungalows before we all got a few hours sleep before we had to check out.
We took the night ferry back to Surat Thani and had to say a very quick goodbye to Mark before taking a coach back to Phuket Town. The tour company that we booked the transfer back to Phuket tried to rip us off at every given opportunity. Never book with Holiday Travel for your transfers around Thailand. Mark made it to the airport with only 10 minutes to spare after having to pay another 100 Baht to get there and we got dropped off outside of Phuket Town and were told that we had to pay more. We walked away at this point after giving the woman a piece of are minds (well Kerry's mind anyway) telling her she was nothing but a con artist, she became quiet quite fast.
We walked the 4km into Town and stayed in the On On Hotel which cost us 500 Baht
for two nights, a bargain. We later realised it was the same place that Leo stayed in the film The Beach (based in Bangkok in the film, actually filmed in Phuket Town) cool or what! We took pictures.
Well that's south Thailand finished, we're heading to Kuala Lumpur next.
Sending Love
Matt and Kerry.
