Edit Blog Post
I can't believe I am writing our last blog in Thailand. What an adventure! We have seen and done so much that it's almost a bit scrambled now.....so many memories to cherish from this one country. Before I get too sentimental I better carry on with telling you what we've been up too.
We were really sad to leave Ko Lanta. It was a beautiful island, so quiet but we don't think it'll be long before it's just as busy as Phi Phi. The crossing to Ao Nang was ok, we hadn't booked anywhere in mind but we had an idea of where we wanted to stay so the bus dropped us off on the main street in the town. We couldn't find this hotel at all. I think the Lonely Planet really messed up on their map because everything was all over the place. A while later a Thai lady came up to us and said her hotel was just up a side street so we went to have a look and decided to stay there. We never did find the other place.
The best thing about the PK Mansion was it was next door to an Irish
pub. Going inside was like going in an old English pub back home, old wooden furniture and silly jokes and picture frames all over the wall. We did practically live in that place for the few days we were there. Andy caught up on all his football and the grand prix and I was quiet with the joys of free wifi. Andy was disappointed to see that a pint of magners cider cost 250B (6 POUNDS).
We went to Railay Beach one of the days - by longtail boat. That was a mission in itself, trying to climb in the boat in high tide, my dress was soaked but all I was worried about was the camera around my neck. The beach itself was nice but we have spoilt ourselves with an empty Maya Bay and nothing can really compare (so far). The prices in the cafe/bars seem to represent the area. If you can afford to stay at one of the 5 star on the beach then you can afford the overcharges. It's a very famous area for rock climbing and the limestone cliffs that dominate the Krabi province are breathtaking.
That evening walking down the street
we bumped into Amelia and Ryan, we knew they were coming to the area and it was great to see them again. We took them to the Irish pub for drinks and then headed to a more lively bar. The drinks started flowing and I had a bucket too. My 'I'm never drinking again' lasted 6 days! It was a nice bucket though - malibu and orange (thanks Vicki!) and it did take me 5 hours to drink it! We played card games and chatted lots. Andy and Ryan had about 4 buckets in the end and were getting quite rowdy and competitive in their card games. It was quite fun to watch. We said goodbye at about 2:30am, feeling sorry for Amelia and Ryan as they had to be up for 8:30 to go kayaking for 4 hours!!
Andy was quite sick the next day and when we met up with Amelia and Ryan again that next evening we all ordered 4 waters! We went to an amazing Thai-Italian place to eat - it had an amazing view and the food was delicious! It was a much earlier night that night as we all had early pick ups
in the morning. Amelia and Ryan going to Phuket and Andy and I heading to Ko Lipe.
It turned out to be a looooong journey! We were supposed to arrive in Ko Lipe at 1pm but didn't get there until 6. Our speedboat that was already an hour and a half late picking us up decided to show us all the islands and stop at different places for us to take pictures. I couldn't even move let alone get the camera out as the boat was packed and Andy and I were squashed in with the vegetables! One man stood up and said "I didn't pay for a sight-seeing tour, I WANT TO GO TO KO LIPE!"
Our bamboo hut at Greenview Resort was well worth the wait. It was really cheap when we booked it online so we were a bit worried. But it was bigger than we imagined, a lovely western bathroom attached to the back of the hut, and the whole hut was made of bamboo! The bed, the chairs, even the wardrobe. It was a great little set up. The beach was lovely and we always had a sunbed (made of bamboo). Ko Lipe
was a beautiful island but we have never seen so many stray cats and dogs. The dogs all seemed to have their own territories and if one went in the others a huge snarling screaming fight would break out. It wasn't nice to watch and sometimes it even woke us up in the night.
Easter was very strange, I felt really home sick, there was no eggs, no church, nothing mentioned about it at all. But on Easter Sunday it did make our day when we found Nemo's just off our beach when we were snorkelling, they were sooo cute swimming in and out of the swishing coral. They came out to see us when we dived down. We took some pics on our underwater camera, I'll have to let you know what they turn out like. Next we want to swim with a turtle.
In the days we did a lot of chilling so not much to report, but we both loved it, we know Malaysia is going to be really busy so it was nice to stop to just stop, In the evenings we ate at beach restaurants or at a bar that showed movies. We
watched Inception and Marmaduke.
For the last night we had some baht to spend as we had been really good over the last 6 days so Andy treated me to a manicure and a pedicure. It was really nice. Then we had a lovely meal on the beach. Andys treat was to order two main courses (no joke!) hehe. We lit a chinese lantern that we let go of on the beach, signalling the end of our time in Thailand. I felt a bit emotional.
So there we have it. The last blog for Thailand. We are really pleased we came here and we have learnt and seen so much. We are really looking forward to Malaysia and Borneo. Bring on the orangutans!
Hope you all had a great Easter!!
Miss you all!
