I made it through 10 days of noble silence at my Vipassana Mediation course. It was pretty intense. I found it very challenging but worth it. I don't want to describe too much as I don't want to project any of my experiences on someone who has not yet gone through the course. All I have to say is it was worth it. The facilities were clean, the food was very good and the meditation practice itself if awesome. I was able to sit still and focus while in the center, now I have to take that diligence into the real world. I also met some amazing new friends from all around the world. We shared a cab back to Khao San Road after Vipassana was over, had some laughs and ate a wonderful dinner together. ... read more

Geo: 16.82, 100.27We stop about half way through the journey near the town of Phitsanulok for a toilet break and for the Thais something to eat, even though it is 02:00 in the morning and we only have 20 minutes. Arrive at Khon Kaen at 07:30 and are dropped off quite near to our next bus which unfortunately does not leave for another hour. Jai disappears to find us some breakfast. We finally arrive in Phon Thong about 11:00 and tuk-tuk across town to where we left the motorbike for out final 20 minutes or so back to the village. We arrive feeling tired and dirty. As expected the house is filthy. Jai's mother has absolutely no concept of clean/dirty. Between us we soon clean enough to be able to stop and have something to eat. ... read more

Returned from a weekend road trip to Chiang Mai this evening. Two days and 10 hours on the road total. A bit hot in the afternoons as you might expect with some light rain in the late morning on the way back. I ride around Thailand on a Honda Wave 125 and I manage to cruise between 100-110 kph most of the time. This trip down from Chiang Mai's Railroad Station on Sunday started early at 07:25 with the odometer showing 13,248km. Headed south along the tracks towards Lumphun for 28 km, where I turned east at 09:00, and fueled up again with another 2.17l. Cost was 70 Baht and the meter showed 13,350 km. As I have noticed everywhere I ride, roads are constantly being improved and widened. From the most southeastern border town of ... read more

it must be or it would be otherwise... i spent a couple of days in bangkok (which is actually a western basterdization of the name of a village that used to exist there called bang makok... the official name of the city is, are you ready for it, 'krungthep mahanakhon amonratanakosin mahintara ayuthaya mahadilok popnopparat ratchathani burirom udomratchaniwet mahasathan amonpiman avatansathit sakkathattiya witsanukamprasit' , which translated roughly means, 'great city of angels, repository of divine gems, great land unconquerable, grande and prominent realm, royal and delightful capital city full of nine noble gems, highest royalty dwelling and grande palace, divine shelter and living place of reincarnated spirits'..) planing my vipassana meditaion schedule while here in se asia... first course scheduled to begin on the 13th of may so i went and bought a train tic... read more

lazy picture blog today. sukhothai is in central thailand - we had to stay in a small town called phitsanulok for two days with no hot water, no flushing toilets and a squatting toilet at that. the room was just enough for our hard 'bed' to fit in, which was more like a wooden plank with a seedy sheet thrown over it than something one would call a comfortable piece of furniture on which one sleeps. though one can hardly complain when the tariff is $6.50 pp per night. sukhothai was beautiful though, and best enjoyed by renting cheap bikes ($1.20 for a day).... read more

Friday 20th We headed south to a workaday Thai town called Phitsanulok by express coach. I unfortunately left our detailed guidebook on the bus so we didn't even have a map of town. We found a reasonable guest house however (having rejected the first). I went out for a walk on my own and was immediately struck by the town. There is virtually no provision for western tourists here. I could find hardly a word written in non-Thai script. The streets are fascinating and the market is magnificent and I've not seen such a selection of food stalls since Bangkok. The heat in Phitsanulok is especially stifling - there is something about the humidity that means that you get sticky and uncomfortable after just a few minutes outside. The eveings brought little relief and the number ... read more

From one camp to another After breakfast and repacking again it was time for Jane and me to leave the Lemon House for two weeks and make the 3 hour drive to our new home. We climbed aboard the open top jeep with our two tour guides Kim & Eg at the front. The express ways in Thailand are for more advanced than those of India and this made our journey a lot more enjoyable. We made a couple of comfort stops as well as a stop for lunch which consisted of more Thai delights. We arrived at our new camp in the town of Wong Tong at around 4pm after a long drive through vast green hills full of Banana Trees, Bamboo and over large rivers. We turned off a rural road onto a ... read more

September 18, 2008 ....This has been by far one of the most difficult and rewarding experiences i have ever had in my life. Personally, not being able to speak, touch or have eye contact with anyone during 10 days really hit me. At the beggining is difficult to understand a lot of things, but as days go by, everything starts making sense. Being isolated & immersed in my own world allowed me to focus, to be aware of my breath for the first time in my life, to find peace of mind and go deep deep inside my thoughts & sensations like never before....from day 1, i got on a non-stop, day & night, rollercoaster of emotions.... ....I am really happy to have found the answer to several questions that troubled my mind during many years.....the ... read more

April 12: The 12th was another day of travel. I flew from Siem Reap to Bangkok. I then had to find a way to Phitsanulok which is a little over 300 Kms away. I decided on a taxi. I was offered a ride for 5ooo Baht ($165). I decided to keep trying, but I had a crazy lady follow me around the airport and tell other taxi drivers not to give me a better deal. I was pissed!! I finaly found a ride for 4000 BHT. It took 6 hours to get there. After arriving I went downstairs to the restaurant to watch a type of variety show. In the middle of it, they had some people with down syndrome come and do comedy skits. Even in Thai it was hilarious. They even had a ... read more

On Thursday 3rd we 'woke up' from having an aweful sleep on our uncomfortable bus to Chiang Mai. It arrived just before 9am after 16 hours on 3 buses - was comforting to see our bags still in the bus. We payed the standard 3 baht to use a toilet and then got a Tuk Tuk to MD Guest house. This place was like a hotel with wifi, a/c and a swimming pool all for less the $7.50 a night each, well inside our $10 budget. We used an ATM and got used to converting Baht to Pounds again, at least we would be using this currency for a month or so! Adam still keeps saying rupees which was 4 currencys ago! We then got some maps and leaflets and visited Wat Chang Mun, this was ... read more
