Background: A unified Thai kingdom was established in the mid-14th century. Known as Siam until 1939, Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country never to have been taken over by a European power. A bloodless revolution in 1932 led to a constitutional monarchy. In alliance with Japan during World War II, Thailand became a US ally following the conflict. Thailand is currently facing armed violence in its three Muslim-majority southernmost provinces.

So..... back to the sophistication (and easy internet access) that is Chiang Mai. I was going to complete an entry about our Chiang Mai Loy Krathong experience and the visit to the Elephant sanctuary, but after the last few days up on the Myanmar border it all seems a bit tame and uneventful....... even the footage of fireworks being let off among the crowds. I'll try and post a YouTube video of the elephants on the IllegalCombatAnt channel though. The intrepid eight set off to Mae Hong Son on a proper aircraft with propellors and everything. Just about enough time to [View Full Entry]

Hello Everyone! Us again!! And look we have pictures again! Mae Sot We travelled from Sukhothai to Mae Sot near the Burmese border on the next leg of our trip. The main reason was to cross into Myanmar briefly to the town of Myawadi to see a bit of Burmese life and also to extend our Thai Visa. We spent a few days here in a beautiful guesthouse complete with our own lounge area and large balcony for around 3 pounds a night, not bad we thought! We crossed the border into Myanmar and enjoyed some time around the town of [View Full Entry]

C.I.E. all is forgiven.
After Pai we went to Mae Hong Son which is a town not far from the Burmese (Myanmar) border. It was quite an adventure getting there, and not because you had to pass through several Thai army checkpoints on the way. The adventure was the transport itself, an ancient rickety bus. We thought that there were two types of bus going from Pai to Mai Hong Son, the normal daily bus and a more expensive mini van. We had planned to use the mini bus, which although more expensive would be quicker, more comfortable and could be booked in advance. Alas, [View Full Entry]

After our 5th week in Thailand, we left Pai to get away from the black hole of hippy enlightenment and headed out on the famous MaeHongSong loop. We found a simple little guesthouse on the little lake in the center of town. I immediately got off on the wrong note with the lady running the place when I asked if there was a discount if we were to stay for 3 nights. "Cheap for you!" she said with a frown. This is an interesting point about Thailand and SE Asia. Julija has had success with this approach more than a few [View Full Entry]

From Chiang Mai we took a mini van over the mountains (gorgeous scenery) to- what we had been led to believe was- a small village called Pai. In actual fact (and much to my disappointment) Pai turned out to be quite a large and modern town that more resembled a tourist resort (i.e VERY gentrified) and was decidedly un-Thai. The huge plus side was that we booked into these amazing little bamboo huts accross a river and a little bit outside of town. We had to cross, literally, the most rickety bridge ever made to get there and back and the [View Full Entry]
