Background: A unified Thai kingdom was established in the mid-14th century. Known as Siam until 1939, Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country never to have been taken over by a European power. A bloodless revolution in 1932 led to a constitutional monarchy. In alliance with Japan during World War II, Thailand became a US ally following the conflict. Thailand is currently facing armed violence in its three Muslim-majority southernmost provinces.

Thailand After Africa, we headed back to the UK for a few weeks so that we could go to Stu and Karen's wedding. We had a great day and are so pleased that we didn't miss it. It was also great to catch up with people again, even if it was a bit of a fleeting visit! A huge thanks to everyone for looking after us and putting us up now that we are homeless in the UK! Our next leg is South East Asia. Starting with Bangkok. This would be interesting as we have been here before. Would we be [View Full Entry]

Well the day has been great so far. Left Chiang Rai by local bus (32 Bhat each) for Chiang Saen. Just 1 1/2 hours to get here - a very quick beer while we sorted out our accomodation - a little more expensive than we had expected at 600 B ($20), but the room is large with 2 king size beds. Gin, the owner has done nothing but try to get money out of us since we arrived and has a friend who can get us down to the boarder crossing and arrange our Visa'a for 1960 Bht - I don't [View Full Entry]

not much to say

Not too much to really report. Just wanted to let you know I am alive. I am in Chiang Saen tonight. I stayed on the river in Tha Ton last night. I hired a motorbike for 5 days. I was getting very stir crazy in Chiang Mai and needed to escape. I love the time I am in the saddle twisting through the mountains, it feels like my soul is at rest and I am at peace with the world as I fly through it. It's the stoping and having to figure out what to do in the evenings solo that [View Full Entry]

* May. 10th, 2007 at 8:15 AM Chiang Saen, Thailand Today is a day of updating my Blog and staying touch with the ‘real world’. (As I write with a big grin…). I am fortunate in having found the cheapest Internet shop I have ever found anywhere and at 20 Baht an hour, I wonder how this young man can make a living out of this business. Having a couple of hours of editing and uploading photos, I shut down my computer and head back to my guesthouse where my bags are already packed as checkout is noon. After grabbing [View Full Entry]

HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL

Asia » Thailand » North » Chiang Saen
Happy Holidays to all from David, Paris, Christie and Natalie! Floating the Mekong River from China to Thailand. We left Jinghong early in the morning in a very dirty bus with 5 other people. I slept most of the way on a hard seat as we bumped down a gravel road for 5 or 6 hours. Soon the bus was packed; some people got off and more got on. I went back to sleep. I smelled gasoline and dirt when I got off the bus. We were in the small town of Chiang Lei on the Mekong River. We found our [View Full Entry]

Chae Sorn.

Asia » Thailand » North » Chiang Saen
Hey. Its been a crazy few days, but that's what's expected right? After Lopburi, we made it to Tak, which is in the middle of nowhere. We found a bar and Kalyna danced for us. Then the next day we drove all the way the Phrae. We went to a kareoke bar, which was absolutely awful, Tony and Kalyna tried to make me sing but nope.... The next day we finally ended up at our destination after about 10 hours of driving in circles to Chae Sorn National Park. Seriously, no one knows where this place is and signs are written [View Full Entry]
