Chiang Mai Travel Blogs

Background: A unified Thai kingdom was established in the mid-14th century. Known as Siam until 1939, Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country never to have been taken over by a European power. A bloodless revolution in 1932 led to a constitutional monarchy. In alliance with Japan during World War II, Thailand became a US ally following the conflict. Thailand is currently facing armed violence in its three Muslim-majority southernmost provinces.

Bye Bye Dutch!

Bye Bye!
Bye Bye!
Strange moment. The good news is that all of us live close to each other and we plan to meet in a Thai island in some days.
After some days with the "Dutchies" was hard to see them leaving. It is so intense when you meet "Farangs"(westerns) here that beeing on my own again was very strange. Chiang Mai has lot's of temples to be seen. They are more then 300 only in the city. The thai Massage on the Women's prision was great! The small Thai girl just jumped on my back and lift me with her feet... a crazy experience. [View Full Entry]

Night market

Asia » Thailand » North » Chiang Mai
Gestern abend bin also zum Nachtmark geschlendert. Laut, smok und alles sehr "cheap, have a look, lady".

The Elephant Sanctuary was the one BIG thing that we wanted to do on this trip.....but we under-estimated just how over-whelming, emotional, enjoyable experience.....we didn't want to leave....and cant wait to go back! From the moment we arrived...the place felt like magic. There is such a sense of safety & happiness in the Elephants who have been rescued there. And so you feek so happy for them....even for the ones who's scars from the abuse they got are still visable...like 'Medo'...a 48 year old female who's back is broken from the enormous tree logs she was forced to carry. Chang Mai

Asia » Thailand » North » Chiang Mai
After 2 days in Bangkok, we boarded a train and 14 hours later we were in Chang Mai. The train was not as bad as we'd expected; we got beer, dinner, breakfast and at about 9pm a man came round and turned all of the chairs into bunk beds so it was actually quite comfortable. We were met in Chang Mai by a woman holding a sign that read "Mr & Ms Simon", we correctly assumed that this was for us! Our hostel here is really good, the people are so firendly and helpful and the room is really nice. On [View Full Entry]

Our last destination in Thailand is one of great expectation, Chang Mai. We both had our own thoughts about this mystical place. Chang Mai itself is a city, quite modern and prosperous by Thai standards. The surrounding area however is a different kettle of fish all together. Mountain tribes, lush vegetation and wild rivers make up the landscape where old Mary and I will be roaming freely amongst tigers, elephants and gibbons. It borders Myanmar (Burma), China and Laos and is often referred to as the Golden Triangle. This of course brings up the conversation about opium for which the area [View Full Entry]
