There are 762 curves on the road to Pai…it’s a dizzying journey, but worth it! Pai is a quiet hillside town, very laid back and chilled out. Once we’d found our accommodation though, we were straight on it, and heading to see the elephants!
We went to Thom’s elephant camp which had been recommended to us, for looking after their elephants well. Transport was provided and Ben and I were the only customers there. First mission….getting up! We had no seat, just a piece of carpet to save our legs from the elephant’s rough, hairy skin. We had to climb on her leg, and hold her ear, and clamber up rather un-gracefully!
We had a spectacular walk through the beautiful countryside, with no one else around (but the guide). We made our way to the river, where the fun began. One by one, we sat on Penom (elephant) and she used her trunk to absolutely soak us with the river water! Then she did an elephant shake which was so strong it threw both of us into the river! Rather wet, we rode back to the camp where we enjoyed a hot spring bath, feeling very happy!
We
enjoyed a very relaxed day in Pai, full of cute shops and cafes, before bracing ourselves for another 762 curves, en route to the border of Thailand….heading for Laos next!
