Once upon a time, in downtown Melbourne to be exact- a young child was born.
And so begins this story.
Twenty four years later- to the day... that child, who we know as Jian (pronounced Jen or to some; Gee-an') celebrated his birthday in style; in Thailand, in bed... Yes, that little boy- all grown up now, was 'sick as bro' today. Which is a shame, as I had planned quite the day for him. Some of which we did manage to fit in.
This was the designated itenerary for the day: Jian would get the ring I bought him, then we would be attending a one-day Thai cooking class (where you are taught how to cook authentic dishes from curries to desserts- and then you eat what you have made!), then we would be fitting in a quick massage (at one of the many massage parlours around here- for which Thailand is reknown), then we would be hopping in a Tuk-Tuk and driving to the other side of Chiang Mai city to go to a Khantok Dinner and ceremony, which consists of them stuffing you silly with national Thai food served on the floor, whilst watching ceremonial
traditional ceremonialHill tribe dancing.
Well- we sort of got there. Jian, the little trooper, although drugged up accordingly was too sick to do the Cooking course. But I was determined to make sure that the boy got fed, and fed well. In a two hour window of medicinal bliss (after a nice sleep in), I whisked Jian off to a restaurant called "The Good View" which is situated beside the river that flows through the city. As some of you know, I don't really eat fish- which means to a degree, Jian does not eat fish much anymore (ah the concessions of being in a relationship! a-yee!)- so I made sure that boy had a big, fresh whopper of a sea creature slapped down on his plate- no excuses! Rest assured, what once was a friendly trout swimming around in the ocean, absently minding its own buisness- maybe even eating a little bit of stray bread thrown from the side of a boat ... was soon a collection of broken bones on Jians plate- with only a few garnishing carrots left behind to suggest that there had even been a meal there in the first place. Nursing our Thai
belly babies, we went to get Jian all massaged up... BUT, the medication started to wear off, and Jian emerged from that pharmacutical cloud (yep- you guessed it) sick again. Now, those of you who know Jian must know how sick he was, if he was knocking back an authentic Thai Massage (no happy ending though). Instead, we went back to the room, rested up (I pumped him full of cold and flu tablets, for which he was thankful) and after a disco-nap, again ventured into the city for the Khantok dinner- which was amazing! But suffice to say, Jian and I won't be eating for a week. The dancing was amazingly graceful and I even got up on stage and boogied along with them (no body-rolling or RohanJodie wedding style slut dancing was evident). But Jian, god bless him got sick again, so I took our wounded soldier back to his room half way through the show and ensured he was tucked-in safe and sound in the comfort of his bed.
Thankyou everyone for their kind birthday messages to him. Sickness may strike you down and small plans interupted, but all of this does not matter, nor can
compare to the well wishes of friends and family from the other side of the world- which assure you that we are most definitley not out of sight-and out of mind, but still in your hearts and thoughts. And I think Jian simply just loved having noise coming from his phone- you know him! I swear that little Nokia vibrated its way from one side of our bedside table to the other!
